Instructional Design Plan

MEDT 7490

Description of Client and Instructional Problem

My client for this project is Florence Haines. She is a 2nd grade Math and Science teacher

at Franklin Forest Elementary School. Ms. Haines want to make her next math lesson on Money

more engaging for her students. She notices while she was introducing the lesson, the students

were not paying attention at all. This topic cover Georgia Standards of Excellence MGSE2.MD.8

Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols

appropriately. When she showed me her presentation that she used to teach, I instantly came up

with a plan. My plan includes creating engaging activities to introduce money to the students

and having them to use technology as an assessment instead of the traditional way.

Instructional Design Model

ADDIE Model
Analysis: Activating the learner prior knowledge
The learner knows the coin amount of a single coin when shown.
The learner has some knowledge of the $ and ¢ symbol.
Design: The design is based on the needs of the students. The learning objectives are based on
the Georgia Standards of Excellence so at the end of each module there will be an assessment to
assess student learning. This generation of learners are familiar with using laptop/desktops and
using technology for different type of assignments.
Development:
Before students start the learning activity, they will watch a brief video
After the video students will go into Nearpod will is embedded into Canvas to complete learning
activities.
Implementation:
Teacher introduces the topic to the students.
Video presentation about coins and bills
Students will be asked to complete learning activities in Nearpod.
To make sure students understand the concept, teacher will have small quizzes throughout the
lesson for students to complete with the acti voters.
Evaluation:
Formative – Using activoters to answer questions on the promethean board.
Description of Re-Designed Lesson

Introduce: The teacher will introduce the lesson to the students. After introducing the lesson, the

teacher will ask the students what they know about money. the teacher will show a Flocabulary

video to hook the students into learning about money. After the students are hooked into the

lesson, the teacher will show the first flipchart.

Interactive: The teacher will pull up the first flipchart and will call student one by one to use the

promethean board marker to write down the correct value of the money as they appear on the

slide.

Engagement: Each will student will get an active voter and the teacher will explain to the

students how they will use it. The teacher will have up the second flipchart, the teacher will

display questions and the students will have to answer it. After all the students have finish

answering the question, the teacher will show who got it correct and explain why the answer is

correct to the students.

Methods of Assessment

Students will be quiz throughout the learning segment. Instead of the using traditional way of

assessing students will be using the activotors to answer questions on the flipchart. Each student

will have a number that correspond with them and the activotor. This will help Ms. Haines know

who is finished. When everyone is finished Ms. Haines will display who got the answer correct

and wrong. After this she will explain why the correct answer is the correct answer to the

students.
ACRL Visual & Literacy Competency Standards

The ACRL Visual and Literacy Standard falls under standard one, the visually literate student
identifies a variety of image sources, materials, and types. With the learning outcome a. Explores
image sources to increase familiarity with available images and generate ideas for relevant image
content. I choose this standard because throughout the lesson, students will be looking at coins
and bills to get familiar with the value.

Explanation of Artifacts

I choose to convert her PowerPoint over to flipchart and use class flow to make them

interactive. I added in questions for students to answer and a video from Flocabulary to get the

student engage in the topic. In addition to watching a video on learzillon. I feel that using the

flipchart made the lesson interactive because the students could use the voters and get excited

about answering questions about money. The process of creating a video can also lead to a

greater understanding of concepts because the students can bring to life their emotions and ideas.

Reflection

I honestly did not have any challenges while doing the assignment. My only challenge was

uploading materials into Tk20. I like that I had the opportunity to help a colleague with a math

lesson to engage her students into the lesson.
