Sangita Kalanidhi for Valayapatti A.R. Subramaniam

The Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy was conferred on thavil player Valayapatti A.R. Subramaniam
on Friday by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Conferring the award during the Sadas, the Minister suggested that music could be propagated by teaching it as an
optional subject in schools and colleges.

Mr. Chidambaram said conducting music appreciation courses in evenings could be an easy way of propagating
music. Stating that there was no need for him to tell the Music Academy about the ways and means of propagating
music, the Minister said the organisation could boldly venture into these areas and the effort would be
appreciated.

Mr. Chidambaram wanted the Academy to groom young musicians who would match senior musicians in all forms
of music by the time the institution reached its centenary milestone.

The Minister expressed happiness over the award being given to Mr. Subramaniam, who also hailed from his
native district.

“Music acquired a new dimension when Valayapatti joined hands with Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan on violin,” he
added.

In his welcome address, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, and president, Music Academy, said: “It is one of
the best seasons we have had for the sheer variety and quality of the performances.”

He pointed out that the response to the event was so overwhelming that several rasikas had to be accommodated
in the mini auditorium for LCD screening of the concerts.

Mr. Murali also said the Academy was the first and probably the only auditorium of its kind in the city to put in
place security measures such as installing metal detectors at entry points and CCTV cameras.

In his speech, Mr. Subramaniam reiterated his demand for teaching music as a subject in schools and including
classical music concerts in all temple festivals.

Besides Sangita Kalanidhi award, Mr. Chidambaram presented Sangita Kala Acharya awards to Veena vidwan
Trivandrum R. Venkataraman and dance guru N.S. Jayalakshmi. TTK awards were given to konnekol vidwan Tiruchi
R. Thayumanavan and musician Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma. The Musicologist award was given to B.M. Sundaram.

The Minister also gave away awards to around 50 young musicians.

A.R. Rahman is CNN-IBN Indian of the Year

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh conferred CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award to the Oscar-winning music director
A.R. Rahman and also to the Indian cricket team for their fabulous performance

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday described A. R. Rahman’s music as inspirational, saying when he
heard his songs in the White House, he had a sense of joy and achievement.

“Rahman’s music is inspirational... When I heard Rahman in the White House, you cannot imagine the sense of joy
and achievement...,” Dr. Singh said, conferring the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award on the Oscar-winning music
director.

Rahman, who was also given an award for entertainment, said “lessening the divide” through music was his
intention.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Dr. Singh called him an “inspirational genius,” saying “there is only one Panditji and he has been a role model and
will be a role model.”

For sports, Saina Nehwal was given the prize for taking Indian badminton to unprecedented heights by becoming
the first Indian woman to win a Super Series title.

In business, Dr. Singh gave the award to the Satyam revival team for the deft handling of the crisis triggered by a
scam in the IT company. For public service, the award was given to Pratham, an NGO, working in the field of
education.

The Indian cricket team, which bagged the first ranking by the ICC for Tests, was also honoured. The former
captains, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, received the award from the Prime Minister.

Culmination of journey

Dravid said the award was the culmination of a journey which began in 1947, while batsman V.V.S. Laxman praised
Ganguly saying that under him the “attitude of the team changed.”

In his message, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the Indian team would try to live up to the expectations of the
people, though it was tough at times.

Replying to a question whether he would like to have Rahul Gandhi in his Council of Ministers, Dr. Singh said: “I
have tried many times but not succeeded. I will be very happy to have him in the ministry.”

At the function, Mr. Gandhi was adjudged the “Politician of the Year” for “energising” the Congress and being the
key strategist behind the party’s revival in Uttar Pradesh.

Mr. Gandhi was not present to receive the award from Dr. Singh. In his message, he said he was in Uttar Pradesh
on a prior engagement.

The young leader earlier refused to join the Cabinet insisting that he preferred party work.

Praising Mr. Gandhi, Dr. Singh said: “He has more than fulfilled the expectations we had but the best is yet to
come.”

To another question whether he had expected the Congress to get a comfortable majority in the May Lok Sabha
elections, the Prime Minister said: “I was doubtful....”

To a query whether the 2009 victory was the biggest moment in his life, Dr. Singh said he took things in their
stride.

Describing 2009 as a “remarkable year,” Dr. Singh said when the rest of the world was going through recession,
India proved the prophets of doom wrong.
Asked in a lighter vein whether a Professor-economist Prime Minister was good for the country in such times, Dr.
Singh said: “You are right.”

Chinese professor receives 2009 Avicenna Prize

Chinese professor Qiu Renzong received the 2009 Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science in Paris on Friday at the
headquarters of the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

At the ceremony, UNESCO Deputy Director-general Marcio Barbosa granted Qiu a gold medal and a certificate
commemorating his contribution to the field of ethics, as well as an envelope that possibly contains the 10,000-
U.S.-dollar cheque prize.

Barbosa, as well as jury representatives of the committee of the Avicenna Prize, spoke highly of Qiu's research in
the ethics of science and steadfast public advocacy of ethical issues related to science.

Bioethics promotes "responsible scientific research, and makes sure that the research benefits humanity rather
than does harms. It includes protection for animals and the environment," Professor Qiu said in his speech,
describing the honor as a recognition of his Chinese colleagues' collective endeavor.

China has realized the importance of bioethics, but there is still a long way to go, Qiu added.

Professor Qiu, 77, made a leading contribution to ethical policy with over 20 volumes and nearly 280 articles
published on ethical issues and guidelines drafted for researchers and policy-makers, besides his work on life-
sustaining technology.

Qiu is currently an emeritus senior research fellow at the Institute of Philosophy of Chinese Academy of Social
Science and professor and chairperson of the Academic Committee at the Center for Bioethics at the Peking Union
Medical College.

The biennial Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science, named after the 11th-century physician and philosopher Abu Ali
al-Husain Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sina, known in Europe as Avicenna, aims to encourage activities of individuals or groups
in the field of ethics in science.

Chinese Ambassador to UNESCO Shi Shuyun and her Iranian counterpart Reza Majidi also attended the ceremony
and delivered speeches.

Idea Cup Tri Series Final: India Falter At Final Hurdle; Sri Lanka Enjoy Ride Home!

Win toss, field first has been the mantra of the Idea Cup 2010. Sri Lanka won the toss and no prizes for guessing
who won. But Sri Lanka did more than win the toss; they delivered the goods in the final in an all round
performance and were richly rewarded.

Mahela Jayawardene steered Sri Lanka home with an unbeaten seventy-one that assumed greater revelance after
Sri Lanka’s solid second wicket partnership was broken to gave a ray of hope to India.
However, there was only one team on the field that truly deserved to win and sadly, in yet another final, it was not
India. After faltering badly with the bat, India’s hopes rested heavily on the decent target set largely due to the
exploits of Suresh Raina and resilience of Ravindra Jadeja.
Upul Tharanga departed with a run on board (incidentally Ashish Nehra’s only wicket with the bowler failing to go
further after bowling just 1.2 overs) but Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan captain, and Tillekeratne Dilshan put Sri
Lanka on a firm foundation with a ninety-three run partnership. Sangakkara’s fifty-five and Dilshan’s forty-nine
runs then assumed enormous importance because Sri Lanka suffered a wobble on the way as Yuvraj Singh and
Harbhajan Singh turned their arm but not to victory, lending a closer affair than the Sri Lankans would have
perhaps liked.
It was a day when the Indian batsmen failed to get going and never gave their bowlers a real chance. But Sri Lanka
had the likes of Jayawardene and new find, Suraj Randiv, to guide Sri Lanka home safely to grab the tri series Idea
Cup at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh.

India confirm Simons as bowling consultant

The South African presence in the Indian coaching bench has gained further weight after the BCCI today appointed
Eric Simons, the former South Africa coach, as bowling consultant for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh,
and the Test and ODI series at home against South Africa that follow.

It has been learned that Simons spoke to Gary Kirsten, India's coach, last week and that was the first occasion he
learned of the management's interest in him. Simon's appointment comes after former South African fast bowler
Allan Donald's name cropped up last Tuesday, as one of the contenders for the vacant bowling coach position.

MS Dhoni, India's captain, recently admitted that the absence of a specialist bowling coach is hurting the team's
performance. It was no understatement, because the inconsistency in the fast bowling department has remained a
concern right from the World Twenty20. In England, Zaheer Khan had aggravated the shoulder injury he picked
during the IPL in South Africa. His inability to go full throttle exposed the younger lot like Ishant Sharma and
Praveen Kumar, and though Ashish Nehra was around he was just finding his own feet, having made a return after
a long time. Things did not improve during the Champions Trophy, and India's problems were exacerbated during
the home ODI series against Australia, which they lost 4-2.

During the recently concluded Sri Lanka series the Indian fast bowlers were lukewarm even if they improved on
their death bowling, and in the current tri-series in Bangladesh they have been disappointing. They failed to
defend a total of 279 against Sri Lanka and allowed Bangladesh to post 296.

The 47-year-old Simons, who played 23 one-day internationals for South Africa and toured New Zealand in 1995,
has a rich pedigree in the coaching profession and was South Africa's head coach from 2002-2004, a period when
Kirsten played under him. Simons spread his first-class career, mostly with Western Province, over 17 seasons as a
right-arm medium pacer and a handy lower middle order batsman.

He has never had any experience as a bowling coach except for the brief stint in the second IPL in South Africa last
year, where he worked as a consultant with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Simons has worked in various capacities
at the prestigious High Performance Centre in Pretoria along with the likes of Kepler Wessels.

Marin Cilic claims Chennai Open

Chennai: For the few thousands at the SDAT Nungambakkam Stadium, Marin Cilic functioned in a parallel universe
where the personal meaning of an ATP final had little relevance to them. Somdev Devvarman had more vocal
support in the 5800-capacity stadium than what he must’ve collectively received in his entire career, but Cilic was
unmoved.

The third seed was particularly severe on his opponent during the big points. Cilic was tested in the second set, but
played a better tie-break to claim the Chennai Open title with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over Somdev in the final on Sunday.

The tall, strong and hard-hitting Cilic was seen as Somdev’s biggest challenge. The difference between the two was
in closing out the games.

Somdev felt less threatened while going for Cilic’c backhand, while creating chances to go down the line.
Unfortunately for the Indian creating those chances were harder as the match wore on.

Cilic was inconsistent and looked unsettled upfront. The 20-year-old Croat rushed in to his shots and went for too
much power. Somdev kept the ball in play while finding the corners and forced Cilic into forehand errors.

Somdev had six breakpoint opportunities in the first set, which was when Cilic found his bearings.

Proves his credentials

The third seed proved his credentials in redeeming himself. There was more poise and enough muscle from the
back of the court and the serving improved. Somdev’s backhand — with the exception of the one he uses for a
sure-shot down-the-line winner — appeared the more viable one for Cilic to exploit.

Moving well and creating opportunities on both flanks, he forced Somdev into errors. The forehand cross-court
was assured more returns, but the forcefulness of his backhand, especially when taken on the rise meant Somdev
could make no mistakes.

Cilic grew more aggressive in the end of the first set against Somdev’s top-spinning shots that were flattened out.
Serving at 30-30, and 4-5 in the first, The wildcard paid for cheek that was uncalled for while producing a suicidal
drop. A double fault then handed the third seed the first set.

Cilic was easily the more dominant in the second set. His aggression was complimented by accuracy and Somdev’s
inability in neutralising it.

The third seed did falter in the second when serving for the match at 5-3. Again, Somdev created opportunities
with the open court to go down the line. Cilic’s serve collapsed for Somdev to convert his first breakpoint of the
match. At 5-5, Somdev fritted away two breakpoint opportunities, after Cilic stepped it up again.

Cilic’s mini-break to go up 2-1 in the tie-break gave him the momentum to claim the win.

Learning experience
“It was a learning experience,” said Somdev after the match. “Not converting like two million breakpoints wasn’t
the best thing. He played really great, especially on the big points. I obviously did not finish some point as I would
have liked to. There are things I need to improve on, which is what I will take from this game,” he added.

Cilic, who claimed his second ATP title, put his win down to his aggressive tactics. “This was a match with a lot of
weight on it. It was not my best performance, but I played well in the most crucial moments. I was going up and
down with my game. I lost concentration I guess when serving for the match. It was a tough situation being 15-40
at 5-5, but I did well then. It was the turning point. My goal was to be aggressive as I could.”

Meanwhile, Americans Eric Butorac and Rajeev Ram defeated Jean-Claude Scherrer and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-
4 to claim the doubles title.

The American pair made the breakthrough in the second game of the first set, but failed to hold on to the seventh.
A game later, they broke to give themselves the chance to serve it out for the set.

The pair was strong near the net in the second and managed the one crucial break in the seventh game before
completing the win.

Spain wins Hopman Cup

Great Britain was on the verge of its first success in the mixed teams tournament when 15-year-old Laura Robson
stunned experienced Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez to give her side the lead and world No.4 Andy Murray
then breezed through the first set against Tommy Robredo.

Murray, who declared pre-match that he would not lose to the world No.16, hadn't dropped a set in singles all
week and his early dominance on the back of an impregnable serve suggested he would finish the 27-year-old
Spaniard off quickly and claim the title for the British.

However the pugnacious Robredo, seeking his second Hopman Cup title, clawed his way back into the contest as
Murray fell away slightly and ultimately notched a memorable victory in three sets, setting up a live mixed doubles.

Despite again Robson belying her inexperience with her poise in a tense doubles clash, Murray struggled to
recapture his best form and the fourth seeds won the important points to take the deciding rubber 7-6 (8/6), 7-5.

The British held three set points in the first set of the doubles at 6-3, but then dropped the next five points.

Although the British were able to save two championship points in the second set, it was third time lucky for the
Spanish and fittingly it was a Robredo backhand winner down the line that sealed the result.

Spain also won the title in 1990, through Emilio Sanchez and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, and in 2002, when a teenage
Robredo teamed with Sanchez Vicario.
Martinez Sanchez admitted she thought the final was lost after her defeat at the hands of Robson.

"Tommy was the hero of the day," Martinez Sanchez said.

However, Robredo said it was a team effort.

"It was a great final," he said.

"I want to congratulate Maria, she said today I did great job but here no one wins alone so it is for her and our
team."

Although Great Britain were part of the inaugural Hopman Cup back in late 1988, it was only their fourth
appearance here and first since 1992.

In the women's singles, Robson, the world No.405, stunned the 26th-ranked Martinez Sanchez, who hadn't
previously been beaten in singles here this week, in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (8/6), confirming her status as a player of
exceptional promise by rattling off 28 winners.

With one rubber already unexpectedly squared away, the in-form Murray had the chance to live up to his bold pre-
match declaration and therefore clinch the tie for Great Britain.

Great Britain's first Hopman Cup title beckoned after Murray's flying start, but Robredo regrouped and the
Spaniard levelled the match on the back of some brilliant forehand winners, before maintaining that form in the
third set to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
