Problem No. 5.48: Effects of changing the firing angle from 30 to 60 degrees in a fully controlled
rectifier feeding a separately excited motor driving a fractional load

Solution:

In a three phase rectifier bridge, one device from the positive (Q1, Q3, Q5) and one from the
negative (Q4, Q6, Q2) must conduct simultaneously to contribute to the load current Id. Conduction
of the bridge rectifiers depends on the firing angle ∝ of the thyristors.

Fig.1 circuit of the fully controlled rectifier feeding a separately excited motor

By changing the firing angle of the thyristors, the output volage and hence the speed of the motor
and the current also changes.

The waveforms for ∝ = 300 are shown by the waveforms below.

Fig 2. ∝ = 300 (extracted from – Drives text book image capture)

The diagram below shows output waveforms for ∝ = 400 .

Fig 3. ∝ = 400 (extracted from - http://eeedrmcet.zohosites.com/files/Lecture%2013%20SSD.pdf)

The diagram below shows output waveforms for ∝ = 1500 .

Fig 4. ∝ = 1500 (extracted from - http://eeedrmcet.zohosites.com/files/Lecture%2013%20SSD.pdf)

As seen from the above diagrams, by increasing the firing angle, the output diode voltage changes.
An increase in the firing angle cause a decrease in the output diode voltage. From fig 2, the output
rectifier voltage is high (and average voltage E, is high) due to a smaller firing angle.

In fig 3, the increase in firing angle causes the average voltage, or diode voltage Vd, to reduce. Fig 4,
shows what happens after further increasing the firing angle to 150 degrees. Vd becomes negative
(inverting mode). Hence an increase in alpha cause a downward shift in the output waveform of the
thyristor bridge rectifier. Such a reduction in the average output waveform of the rectifier will result
in a reduction in the speed and current of the motor.
Problem No. 6.12: Why high inrush currents occur during open circuit transition of star-delta and
auto-transformer starters of induction motors?

Solution:
Star-delta
In a star-delta starter, high currents occur when the switching from star to delta occurs at the time
when motor speed did not read reach 90 % of its rated speed.

Auto-transformer

Since this is a single wound transformer and there is no electrical isolation, the auto-transformer
short circuit currents are more
