SCULPTRIS NOTES
Start out by reading documentation.txt in your Sculptris folder.

Navigation
Alt+left mouse Rotate the view
Alt+shift+left mouse Pan the view
Alt+ctrl+left mouse Zoom the view
Z Snap the view to to nearest axis (Front, Left, Right, Back, Top,
Bottom)
Hold down P while left-clicking to set pivot point to where you click
P Show/hide pivot point

In the Options menu, Free camera will let you rotate left/right according to your own left and right.
When turned off, the left and right rotation is according the vertical center of the scene.

Objects
.obj files can be imported, but only in sculpting mode.

Click on objects to select them. Use Ctrl-A to select all objects. Ctrl-D to deselect.
To cut, copy and paste, use Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. Use Delete to delete.
Ctrl-N will ad a new sphere.

Use Scale to resize an object, global on

Use Grab to move an object around, global on.
Use Rotate to rotate an object, global on. Press Mirror to let the object be mirrored.

General Brush Options

Holding down shift and dragging with your left mouse will let you smooth things. Which is nice. D
on’t do it to much, as it will spoil that rough, hand-modelled look.

Holding down Ctrl and dragging with your left mouse will draw “inverted”. The effect is depending
on your current tool.
Pressing W will toggle wireframe view on/off

Brush Pop-up
Holding the space bar down brings up the Brush Pop-up, which will let you adjust size, strength,
detail, and let you turn bitmap brush on and off.
Holding Space down and click-dragging vertically will adjust the brush size.
Holding Space down and click-dragging horizontally will adjust the brush strength.

Modelling hidden areas

Hold H down and drag with your mouse to make part of an object invisible. Holding down H and
clicking on the object will make the entire object invisible. Ctrl-H will enable visibility. This is really
nice when you want to sculpture an obscure, hidden area.

Tool Settings
The Enable checkmark under the brush icon turns bitmap brush on and off
The Directional checkmark will let your bitmap brush turn in the direction of your stroke
The Random checkmark will let each bitmap turn in a random direction
The Invert checkmark will invert your drawing bitmap

The Detail slider defines how many triangles there are added. Set it to zero to preserve the
current number of triangles. Press Q to toggle between zero and the current number.

Masking
You can limit where you paint with masking. Click on Edit mask to toggle mask mode. Hide mask
will determine if the mask should be visible. Enable mask will determine if your stroke should be
limited by the mask. (paint mode only)
The mask can be inverted using Ctrl+I, and copypasted with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V (paint mode only)

Sculpting Tools
Draw
This is the Tool that you will use the most.
The Clay checkmark adds material op top of the surface. When turned off, the surface is inflated
instead.
The Soft checkmark is modifier which “changes its behavior depending on the brush size” or
something.

Crease
While the Draw tool is useful for create soft, round form, the Crease tool will enable you to create
creases and, when inverted, sharp ridges. This tool is very fundamental.

Grab
This tool will drag stuff around. It is useful when adjusting the outline “siluette” of your object. You
can also use it to create exteriors like arms and legs.
Global will let you drag the whole object around. If you mask off an area while in global, you can
drag the rest of the object around without deformation. Nice if you want to shorten a neck a little,
without deforming the head and body.

Flatten
Flattens the surface parallel to the “local plane”.
The Lock Plane checkmark will flatten with the angle of the starting surface
The Angel falloff checkmark will “keep the contrast” or something.

Pinch
This tool drags stuff together towards the cursor.. It should be used to sharpen already existing
corners.
In negative, this tool generates wierd, organic stuff.

Inflate
Inflates already existing shapes.

Scale
Resizes stuff.
Global will let you resize the entire object. If you mask off an area while in global, you can resize
the rest of the object without deformation. Nice if you want to make the head a bit larger, without
deforming the body.

XYZ will lock the XYZ axis, to that your object will stay at the same proportions.

Rotate
Rotates stuff.
Mirror will let the object be mirrored.
Global will let you rotate the entire object. If you mask off an area while in global, you can rotate
the rest of the object without deformation. Nice if you want your figure to strike a pose, or just turn
the head a bit.

Reduce Brush
Reduces the number of triangle in the mesh. In the options, "reduce strength” adjusts the Reduce
Brush.

Painting
Even though there's no smooth button in paint mode, you can still blur textures by holding down
Shift. It also works with normal maps, but it leaves visible seams.

Masks works the same way as in sculpting mode.

Texture: Image plastered on top of your 3D object, like a poster.

Material/shader: Fancy way of projecting an image on your object, which make it behave like a
light source.

The High mask checkbox lets you paint at the surface, ignoring the walleys.
Cavity reverses the high mask so that you ignores the surfaces but paint the valleys

Photoshop painting
Click on the Show advanced tools checkmark. You will now see 6 additional icons, among them
EXPORT PSD and IMPORT PSD

Click on EXPORT PSD. This generates a high-res .psd file, and a file called objekt.obj with the 3D
info of the scene.

The .psd file contains the following layers:

● bump
● shade
● paint
● Background

The paint layer is empty - this is the one you should paint on.

When finished, click on IMPORT PSD to get your changes back into Sculptris.

Painting Shortcuts
T view UV map in paint mode
C color picker (hold and click)
S color selector

Multiple materials
The materials icon to the right of the menu has a dot to the left and another dot to the right.
Clicking the left dot will let you go to the material layer below.
Clicking the right dot will let you go to the material layer above.

If you click on the right dot without any existing material layer above, a new material layer is

created. It will be empty, you will have to select a material yourself.

Once a new material is added, you will have to turn on the Edit checkmark below, and paint with
white to enable the material. Paint with black to disable. You can also use gray.

Alpha Textures
Alpha Textures can be used in both sculp mode and paint mode. However, it is most useful in
paint mode, to create bump maps.

If you do use Alpha Textures in sculpt mode, try to use as simple a textures as posible. set Detail
to the max, so you have enough triangles for the details. You might even want to start out by
subdivide the area with Reduce Brush inverted.

Brush Spacing in the options menu adjusts the distance between each drop of texture. 100 % will
let you have no overlap. Set it to 80 % for a little overlap.

Tips
Start out with the overall shape of your object. Then zoom in later to add details.
Constantly turn around your object, to get a more true picture of its 3D shape.
It is easy to create a face or a body with mirrored symmetry. However, symmetrical figures are
boring. Only use symmetry for the initial shape, then switch it off.
Don’t smooth your sculpture before later in the process, when you have its rough form nailed
down.
Avoid using Ctrl-Z Try to correct the errors using your tools instead.

Obscure stuff
9 toggle the virtual symmetry mirror
0 update geometry
F6 Memory info in real time. How nice!
