CLASSROOM-BASED

ACTION RESEARCH
PURPOSE: To improve student learning
HOW: - by identifying issues, concerns, and problems that negatively affect student learning
-by developing and implementing a strategy/intervention to solve the problems

Step1: Identify the Problem The primary aim of this paper was to determine the

effectiveness of video clips and interactive learning materials as

a teaching strategy used in improving the academic

performance of Grade Six pupils in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao

at Amsic Integrated School.

The forty-four out of two hundred fifty -seven pupils

performed very low in the first quarter test the fact that their

average scores fell below the expected standard of the

Department of Education. Keeping up with the findings of the

study, the low performing pupils greatly improved in their

academic performance for the third quarter Thus, video clips

instruction and interactive learning materials employed by the

teacher-researcher was effective in enhancing the low

performing pupils in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao 6.

As an offshoot of the findings and conclusions, he

recommends that students who encountered difficulties in

Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao must be given an intervention to

improve their academic performance.

Step 2. Search for literature. Learning is the acquisition of knowledge and skills

possible through systematic interaction between and teachers

and learners. It happens every day and involves teacher,

learner, and methodology and materials interaction. Parts of

these materials are known as instructional resource ( J. A.

Akerele, et al, 2012)

Learning Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao is fun. Most of

pupils nowadays are engaged in different computer games.

Exploring and enjoying the computer, internet, social networks,

blogs, social media and other internet websites contribute to the

development of 21st century learners. In line with the goal of

the K to 12 Program, developing the 21st century learners,

students, and teachers must be equipped with new trends in

technology in the teaching and learning process

Thus, the researcher is in the pursuit of helping the Grade 6

pupils of Amsic Integrated School improve their performance

on Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao. Therefore , this action research

entitled, “Effectiveness of Using Video Clips and Interactive

Learning Materials in Teaching Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao 6”,

was hereby proposed to find out its effectiveness in the

performance of the Grade 6 pupils.

Technology nowadays is common among schools,

offices, and to every individual, as this supports learning and

helps in developing knowledge, wherein, integration is the

use of technology to enhance, reiterate, present and assess how

students understand the syllabus of the program (Edutopia,

2005). Moreover, this supports both teaching and learning.

According to a summary of current research and

educator surveys, educational television and video reinforces

reading and lecture material, aids in the development of a

common base of knowledge among students, enhances student

comprehension and discussion, provides greater

accommodation and diverse learning styles, increases student

motivation and enthusiasm, promotes teacher effectiveness (

CPB, 2004).

Video based materials boost student creativity and

cooperation. Access video can help students and create a

distinctive context for their learning experience. Based on a

true-story – the incorporation of video in the classroom, it has

allowed Broad meadows students and teachers to help in

broadcasting school announcements, use pre-recorded classes to

overcome teacher shortages and influence Internet-based digital

video to enhance self-directed learning ( A. D. Greenberg,

2012)

Video is a visual medium, and optimal use capitalizes

on the strengths of its visual material. This includes providing

visual demonstrations or evidence, dramatizing events and

concepts, and appealing to the emotions educational video with

instructional strategies and cognitive modeling traits embedded

in the video itself can aid in student comprehension. Examples

range from zooming in on details, to providing titles and other

attention-drawing graphics, to animations. Videos with closed

captioning can further promote learners’ reading fluency and

motivation to read (Lin, 2003).

Step3. Develop strategy/ This study presents the research methods and techniques,
intervention
data gathering instrument and procedures used in this study. A

brief description of the research subjects and the data needed

including the treatment of data were likewise presented in this

chapter.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of

video clips and interactive learning materials in improving the

academic performance of Grade 6 in Edukasyon sa

Pagpapakatao at Amsic Integrated School, SY 2017-2018

Their mean has improved as indicated in the table which

was 49.06 which is equivalent to 81.76%. At a glance, an

increase in the academic performance among pupils before the

traditional classes and video clips classes can be observed. It

indicates that there was an improvement in their academic

performance.

There is evidence that students are more confident in the

subject matter after they have watched video clips pertaining to

the subject matter and have discussed them in class (Mayo,

Sharma and Muller, 2009). This confidence then has a direct

effect on student engagement, as well as achievement in the

classroom. Once students have been exposed to video clips in

the science classroom, in order for the experience to be

valuable, the teacher must create opportunities for discussion to

occur.

Step 4. Identify Findings After the treatment using video clips and interactive

learning materials for the respondents, they took the post-test.

The data were analyzed, it was found that the learning

intervention has a significant effect on the performance of the

Grade 6 pupils particularly in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao. All

the findings from the data collection support that using video

clips and interactive learning materials in teaching Edukasyon

sa Pagpapakatao have a great impact in improving the

academic performance of students. Data analysis revealed that

there was a significant difference of 46.96% between the mean

percentage score performances in the pre-test which was

34.80% and 81.76% in the post-test.

Step 5 Make a Decision Pupils who encountered difficulties in Edukasyon sa

Pagpapakatao must be given an intervention to improve their

academic performance. Video clips and interactive learning

materials are effective strategy to increase the performance of

the pupils. This can be utilized and tried out by other teachers

not only in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao but also in other

learning areas that need intervention. A follow-up study should

be conducted to determine the reliability of results. There is

need for the school to conduct periodic training sessions in

teaching lessons particularly in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao
