INTRODUCTION TO CATIA
CATIA works like an integrated digital factory by its own. You can start with a 2D
sketch of the product, digitally create a full 3D prototype, manufacture it through
Numerical Control (NC) workbench and manage the development and marketing of this
product by using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) utilities. Some of the
workbenches in CATIA are specially configured for ship design, aerospace sheet metal
design, A-Class surface design, Finite Element Analysis (FEM), ergonomic design and
analysis …etc
CATIA helps engineers by integrating all engineering design and analysis tools under a
single software package. This unique integration brings the advantages of data
management, consistency in information flow, savings in time and money, rapid product
development strategies, user productivity, enhanced photorealistic visualization...etc.
Part Design: This module is responsible for converting two-dimensional graphics to three-
dimensional objects which is most famous in Catia and is closely linked with sketcher module. The
part design Module it is considered from most important modules, that used by the designer to get the
additional advantage from cad programs - three-dimensional drawing.
Assembly: This module is responsible for assembling the parts previously produced in Part
Design, and it is most important for those who work in the field of machinery design or design in
general, because it is the one who shows the inter-relationships between the parts of the machine or
any mechanical establishment.
Stress Analysis: This module is responsible for testing parts designed to withstand the loads
expectedoccurrence on it, and shows how the mechanical parts are affected by the colors, where they
can learn the most dangerous points in terms of emotion through the distribution of colors.

Drafting: This module is responsible, for converting what you see on the screen to
standardengineering drawings can be traded in the workshop for manufacturing or save them
for documentation.
Surface and WireFrame: With this module surfaces can be drawing with zero size and weight
andhas its uses in the aerospace, automotive, ships and Mold Design.
File Management
When you create an assembly product, CATIA automatically assigns a parametric relation to each
component in the assembly. Parametric modeling tools use dimension, equations and constraints to
define geometry in 3D space. This gives the advantage of simultaneous part update.
When you make a change in any assembly component, you don’t need to modify your
assembly product. CATIA automatically updates the assembly product. CATIA also keeps the
history of each construction/modification actions you’ve made on your model.
This gives you the flexibility of changing parameters quickly. In low-end CAD
applications you can’t modify your original geometry once you changed it. The

parametric modeling saves time and money, speeds up the design/analysis phase and
keeps models consistent.

Introduction to CAM
CNC PROGRAMMING:
The coordinates are almost exclusively Cartesian and the origin is on the work
piece. For a lathe, the infeed/radial axis is the x-axis, the carriage/length axis is
the z-axis. There is no need for a y-axis because the tool moves in a plane through
the rotational center of the work. Coordinates on the work piece shown below are
relative to the work.
CNC lathes are rapidly replacing the older production lathes (multispindle, etc) due
to their ease of setting and operation. They are designed to use modern carbide
tooling and fully utilize modern processes. The part may be designed and the tool
paths programmed by the CAD/CAM process, and the resulting file uploaded to the
machine, and once set and trailed the machine will continue to turn out parts under
the occasional supervision of an operator. The machine is controlled electronically
via a computer menu style interface; the program may be modified and displayed
at the machine, along with a simulated view of the process. The setter/operator
needs a high level of skill to perform the process, however the knowledge base is
broader compared to the older production machines where intimate knowledge of
each machine was considered essential. These machines are often set and operated
by the same person, where the operator will supervise a small number of machines
(cell).
