Global Mechanical Design Standards GMD1

Introduction
This manual is the property of General Motors Corporation. The Body-In-White (BIW) Global Manufacturing
Engineering Group compiles this manual. Authorized global representatives, from the Body-In-White Global
Enterprise, have approved the contents.

These standards have been globally agreed upon by the following General Motors regions: GMNA, GME,
GMLAAM and GMAP.

Purpose
These standards apply to all new systems on Global BIW Tooling (i.e. Purple Tools), which shall be shared on
a global level. All shared tooling, regardless of design location will follow these standards.

Regional acceptance is shown by checkmarks per region on the left side in the Table of Contents.

There are multiple instances within this manual, which global agreements could not be reached. Those
particular instances are outlined as such throughout the manual.

The Global Mechanical Design Standards (GMD1) manual, informs both, Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) and
their respective suppliers on various processes, procedures and deliverables for the tool design activity.

The term “Subject Matter Expert” is utilized extensively within this manual, due to significant organizational
differences, in regional roles and responsibilities.

For legacy equipment or tool designs that will not follow this Global Standard, all programs are required to
define and document the standards to be followed.

When modifications or deviations are needed, (e.g., install of Kit Tooling, or construction of additional sets of
existing tools), all Subject Matter Experts (i.e. Program Leads), shall clearly define and document the extents of
the modifications and deviations.

The timing and integrity of the program must be considered while documenting these program requirements.

All views shown within the content of this manual will be updated to reflect “First Angle Projection”, at periodic
intervals, which are tied directly to the scheduled release dates.

Components, which are graphically shown, may not have direct relationship, to the ACCS1 / ME NACCL.
Component graphic representations will be revised, on an as needed basis. Component graphic characteristics
are shown, to associate tool design application intent, not actual component representation.

The Global Standards Approval Board must approve any deviations to this manual, beyond what is published.

General Motors retains exclusive rights to change, amend, modify, suspend or terminate any potential issues,
pertaining to this manual.
