exposure precision.

Before adjusting the generator as described in this manual, check that the
equipment has been installed according to the installation manual
(2C313-020E) and understand operating method given in the operation
manual.

Refer to the wiring diagram supplied with the equipment when performing
the adjustment or test.

These tests are to be performed after installation to meet the

2.2 Precautions

2.2.1 Introduction

One of the most important considerations in X-ray work is protection

against the hazards of X-radiation. X-ray equipment properly used does
not pose any danger; however, careless or improper usage can be
dangerous. Therefore, it is essential that all service or operating
personnel of this equipment must fully understand the problem
themselves. They should also be thoroughly familiar and acquainted
with the instructions in this manual pertaining to proper use of the
equipment.

2.2.2 Maximum permissible dose

Various studies on the effects of X-ray radiation have provided the

foundation for establishing maximum permissible dose of X-radiation.
The results of these studies used by the National Council on Radiation
Protection and the International Comittee on Radiation Protection to
develop recommendat ions for the maximum permissible does (MPD).

The I.C.R.P. recommendations can be interpreted to say that the maximum

permissible dose (MPD) to the most critical organs, accumulated at any
age, shall not exceed 5 x 10 -2Sv (5 rems} multiplied by the number of
years beyond age 18 and the dose in any 13 consecutive weeks shall not
exceed 3 x 10s2Sv (3 rems}. Thus, for those involved in radiological
works, accumulation MPD equals 5(N-18) x 10W2Sv {5(N-18) rems), where N
is the age in years and is greater than 18. For the hands, forearms,
feet, and ankles of radiologists, the MPD is set at 75 x 10T2Sv
(75 rems} a year.

2.2.3 Manufacturer’s responsibility

Although this equipment incorporates protection against X-radiation

other than the useful beam, practical design cannot provide complete
protection. The design of the equipment does not compel the operator
or his assistants to take adequate precautions, or prevent the
possibility of authorized or unauthorized persons carelessly, unwisely
or unknowingly exposing themselves or others to direct or secondary
radiation. Therefore, only authorized and properly trained persons
should operate this equipment.

All persons authorized to use the equipment must be cognizant of the

danger of excessive exposure to X-radiation. The equipment is sold
with the understanding of the TOSHIBA CORPORATION. Medical Equipment
Division, its agents and representatives, neither assume nor accept any
responsibility for any injury or danger which may result from exposure
to X-radiation. Furthermore, TOSHIBA CORPORATION does not accept any
responsibility for over-exposure of patients or personnel to the
X-radiation generated by this equipment due to poor operating
techniques or procedures. Also, no responsibility will be assumed for
any machine that has not been properly serviced and maintained in
accordance with the manufacturer’s technical manual or which has been
modified or tampered with in any way.

2.3 Radiation Safety

(1) Radiation protection

Since effects harmful to the health may be experienced by anyone

exposed to an excessive amount of X-radiation, the greatest
consideration should be given to protection against the direct
primary beam from the X-ray tube. Some of these effects are
cumulative and may extend over a period of months or years. The best
safety rules for X-ray protection is to stay out of the primary beam
at all times.

Any object in the path of the primary beam produces a secondary or

scattered radiation. The intensity of this scattered radiation
depends upon the type and amount of the primary beam and the atomic
number of the objects or tissues struck by the primary beam. This
radiation may actually be of greater intensity than the image-forming
radiation reaching the film.

Since this radiation i s as potenti ally dangerous a s the primary beam

radia tion, protective meas ures mus t be taken to sa fegua rd against it.

These protective measures may be carried out with lead shielding

devices. Items such as movable lead screens and lead-impregnated
rubber gloves and aprons can be used to minimize possible dangerous
exposures . It is imperative that these devices have a lead thickness
of a least 0.25 mm or the equivalent; they should be used by those
persons exposed to radiation fields of 12.9 x 10-7C/(kg=h) {5mR/h) or
more. During servicing or while operating this equipment a person’s
unprotected hands, wrists, arms, or other parts of the body should
never be exposed to the primary X-ray beam.

(2) Monitoring of personnel

Monitoring of personnel provides a valuable crosscheck of the

adequacy of radiation safety. It can aid in revealing inadequate or
improper radiation protection practices, and potentially serious
radiation exposure situations.

Adequate protection should be confirmed by measurement in rads. This

measurement should be taken to determine that the X-ray radiation at
any location does not exceed the accepted tolerance dose. A less
accurate, but frequently used, means of confirming this protection is
to place unexposed film at several strategic locations for a given
period prior to film development. The use of fluorescent screens,
after the eyes have become accommodated to the darkenss, may also aid
in locating inadequate protect ion areas.

Another common method of radiation monitoring is the use of film

badges. These devices consist of an X-ray sensitive film inserted
into a badge which incorporates metal filters of varying degrees of
X-ray transparency . Even though this device can only measure the
radiation reaching the particular area of the body it is worn on, it
does furnish a clue to the amount of radiation that is being
received.

All these measures are meaningless unless the rules of safety

regarding X-ray protect ion are known and are rigidly followed.

- 3 -

Refer to the following recommendations for specific safety

requirements.

(3) Recommendations

It is vitally important that everyone associated with X-ray work

become fully acquainted with the recommendations of the National
Bureau of Standards, the National Council on Radiation Protection,
and the International Committee on Radiation Protection. The control
of diagnostic medical X-ray equipment varies in detail from state to
state; however, in general, the recommendations of the National
Council on Radiation Protection based on the other authorities, are
recommendations in this manual. However, prior to operation, all
personnel qualified and authorized to operate this apparatus should
become familiar with and, where pertinent, conform to the established
recommendations contained in the documents provided by the
aforementioned authorities. The current sources of information are
listed for reference.

a. National Council on Radiation Protection No. 33 (Medical X-Ray and

Gamma-Ray protection for Energies up to 10 MEV-Equipment Design

Whenever each of these switches is pressed, the buzzer will

sound and, in Mode 1 or 2, the voltage will increase or
decrease to approximately 0.05 V (to approximately 0.5 V when
the tenfold switch is pressed). If the switch continues to be
pressed, the buzzer will automatically start sounding so that
the result can be achieved as if the switch were pressed by the
number of times the buzzer sounded.
The procedures for using these switches to input the
high-voltage cable length or the tube code are described in the
section concerning adjustment methods in each mode.

(This is because it is not possible to distinguish data change
from data breakdown. > In such cases, recover by using the
above procedure. After recovery, data adjusted prior to
turning off the power supply are all effective.

Note: The recovery routine is simply to regenerate the error

check code, but not to repair the destroyed data.
Therefore, it is necessary to check the data after
recovery.
If the check shows that the data are changed, correct it
in Mode 1, 2 or 4. If data have been completely
destroyed, it is necessary to reset the tube. In this
case, the setting must start with the setting of the
high-voltage cable length.

<l> Stored data check

The stored data is checked by heat data when the power supply
is turned on. Data is checked in each tube and each focus (for
data blocks- Tube 1 LF, Tube 1 SF . . . Tube 3 SF). If an
attempt is made to use the data block in which an error has
been detected, an alarm (intermittent beeping sound) and an
error message will be generated. To recover from this state,
execute recovery procedure (9) from a data error.

<2> Set condition check

If the set tube voltage becomes greater than 150 kV or the tube
current is not set correctly, an alarm (intermittent beeping
sound) will be generated. If the tube voltage or the tube
current is set correctly, the alarm will be removed.

<3> Maximum filament current check

The heating output data is set to a value smaller than the
maximum filament current to prevent the X-ray tube filament
from breaking down. If the heating data exceeds the maximum
filament current value when the READY switch is pressed, the
heating level will be set to the preheating level and an alarm
(intermittent beeping sound) and an error message will be
generated.

tube currents.

<8> Set the S/R switch down to set to Mode 0.

Note 1: Tube current values of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 64OmA
can be entered in Procedure <3>. The tube voltage
should be set to 90kV.
Note 2: Increase the compensation current level to correct for
a fall in tube current during X-ray exposure and
decrease it to correct for a rise in tube current.

Note 3: When either the y switch is pressed once,

the buzzer sounds once and the compensation current

level is increased, or decreased, by one step. If the
switch is held down, the buzzer will automatically
sound at fixed intervals; the number of times the
buzzer sounds is the same as pressing the switch the
same number of times.
Note 4: When the compensation current level value reaches the
upper or lower limit, the buzzer emits alternating
short and long tones.
Note 5: The X-ray exposure time should be longer than 200ms.

(9) Recovery from any data error

If a data error has occurred, recover with the following procedure:

<l> When the S/R switch is tilted while the alarm sounds, the

switches are pressed simultaneously,

the indicator goes out and the recovery routine (for

regeneration of an error check code) is executed. Upon
completion of execution, the indicator lights up and the buzzer
sounds.

- 24K -
No. 25313-002E*J

<4> Reset Mode 0 by tilting the S/R switch and check the data. If
the power supply is turned off in the adjustment mode during
tube current adjustment, data is judged to have be destroyed
when the power supply is turned on again, and the alarm sounds.
(This is because it is not possible to distinguish data change
from data breakdown.) In such cases, recover by using the
above procedure.

In this
case, the setting must start with the setting of the tube
code.

(10) Alarm

<l> Stored data check

The stored data is checked by heat data when the power supply
is turned on. Data is checked in each tube and each focus (for
data blocks- Tube 1 LF, Tube 1 SF . . . Tube 3 SF). If an
attempt is made to use the data block in which an error has
been detected, an alarm (intermittent beeping sound) and an
error message will be generated. To recover from this state,
execute recovery procedure (9) from a data error.

<2> Set condition check

If the set tube voltage becomes greater than 150kV or the tube
current is not set correctly, an alarm (intermittent beeping
sound) will be generated. If the tube voltage or the tube
current is set correctly, the alarm will be removed.

<3> Maximum filament current check

The heating output data is set to a value smaller than the
maximum filament current to prevent the X-ray tube filament
from breaking down. If the heating data exceeds the maximum
filament current value when the READY switch is pressed, the
heating level will be set to the preheating level and an alarm
(intermittent beeping sound) and an error message will be
generated.

(2) Tube volt age adjustment

Perform tube voltage adjustments for each tube current setting.

Although tube voltatges, 30 kV, 40 kV, 60 kV, 90 kV, 120 kV and 150
kV, are to be adjusted in principle, any voltage between tube
voltage sections (see Note 2) can be adjusted.
If the tube current value differs greatly from the value preset by
means of the operation panel, the tube voltage cannot be adjusted.
In such cases, therefore, the tube current adjustment should also
be made along with the tube voltage adjustment.
The delay time of the tube voltmeter should be 20 msec.

[Adjustment procedure]

<li Determine how many kV should be increased or decreased from the

measured tube voltage value in order to put the tube voltage
within the tolerance.

<2> Look at the display of 7--segment LED on the INV-2 PWB. This is
tube voltage shift data and stored into the RAM. If an
increase or decrease is perfomed around this numeric value, the
tube voltage will also be increased or decreased. One step
corresponds to about 2 kV. Thus, determine a value to be
written anew.

<3> Ad just SW&3 (rotary switch) on the INV-2 PWB to the value
determined in <2>, then press SW3. Consequently, the RAM is
rewritten. Check that the display of 7-segment LED has changed
to this value.

<4> Generate X-rays again and measure the tube voltage. If the
tube voltage is not found within the tolerance, repeat the
above from Item (1).

Note 1: When the [z] or [z] switch is used, the value can be

increased or decreased ten times as compared to when the

switch is used, respectively.

5.4.3 Fluoroscopic tube voltage adjustment

If the X-ray tube current is over, it may not be possible to obtain the
correct tube voltage. In this case the tube current must be adjusted.
Operation (1) below is the main adjustment procedure and operation (2)
is the supplementary adjustment procedure.

(1) VR6 adjustment (VR6 on INV-1 PWB)

Fine-adjust VR6 on the INV-1 PWB so that the measured value of the
tube voltmeter becomes 90kV+lkV under the conditions of 90kV and
1mA. LED4 should indicate sT8” in the fluoroscopic mode.
By manually setting all mA and kV values, check that they are
within 7% of the kV accurate value.

(2) If the tube voltage accuracy is not yet within 7% after adjustment
(1) above, use SW2 and SW3 on the INV-2 PWB as in the case with the
radiographic tube voltage adjustment. This adjustment, however, is
possible only in the fluoroscopic mode. When this mode is turned
off, the radiographic tube voltage adjustment is possible.
In addition this adjustment is performed for each voltage section
shown below at 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4mA respectively.

During a series of 10 radiation exposure measurements, all variable

controls for technique factors are adjusted to alternate settings and
reset to the test setting after each measurement.

According to the following procedure, 10 radiation exposures are measured.

APPENDIX 07 TEST METHOD OF AUTOMATIC EXPOSURE MINIMUM EXPOSURE TIME

A. Objective

When the X-ray tube potential is equal to or greater than 50kV, the minimum
exposure time for field emission equipment rated for pulsed operation shall
be equal to or less than a time interval equivalent to two pulses, and the
minimum exposure time for all other equipment shall be equal to or less
than l/60 second or a time interval required to deliver SmAs, whichever is
greater (See 102.31(a)(3)(ii)).

B. Test method

(1) Set the X- ray apparatus and test instruments according to Fig. 2.

(2) Turn on the AEC selector switch.

(3) Set the tube voltage for 90kV, the tube current for lOOmA and the film
density regulator for “0” position.

(4) Set the acrylic phantom (thickness : 5cm) in front of the detector.

(5) Perform an exposure and observe the actual exposure time.

In the case of the detector with multiple detecting fields, test should
be taken to each combination of detecting fields. For example, test
should be done under 7 conditions (23 - 1 = 7) for the detector with 3
fields.

(6) Confirm that the exposure time is within the rejection limits.

Measured time on the exposure time counter should be equal to or less

than l/120 second.
