ACTION PLAN REFLECTION

The Action Plan is the last step of the reflective cycle. It enabled me to improve my teaching
because it helped me to be better equipped to cope with similar lessons in the future. My action
plan has been successful because I implemented an observation made it by my tutor “It is not
enough to make an action plan, you have to get feedback in order to verify if it is working or not”
and I did it. I would like to mention that research helped me to be more analytical and it helped me
to see details that before I did not notice.

Firstly, I chose “Phonology” because I am not good at it. The module 19 made me aware of
phonemes, place and manner of articulation, stress, intonation, segmental and suprasegmental
features. I would like to highlight that in past I did not teach phonology but this session was useful
because I changed my approach and now I teach it and I include phonological features in my
teaching. For example, now, I always wrote the phonemes at the back of my word cards so it
helped me to improve my learners’ pronunciation and they articulate their mouths correctly when
they pronounce diphthongs and monophthongs. My learners are proud of their knowledge
because when a partner mispronounces a word they help him/her to pronounce the word
accurately and show him/her how he/she has to articulate his/her mouth. It is important to mention
that my students are tested by a colleague to give me feedback about my learners’ pronunciation. I
am going to experiment with suprasegmental features in the following sessions and I am going to
achieve it by researching online and by reading Gerald Kelly’s book How to teach pronunciation.

Secondly, I have written a handbook that contains the form, the meaning, and the pronunciation of
grammar structures for teaching reference and it has improved my teaching when I teach
language systems. My learners’ reaction has been positive because I can anticipate problems and
solve them immediately so my learners participate actively because they know that I am prepared
to support their language system so they are not afraid to make mistakes. In order to know more
about grammar I am going to watch webinars and participate in discussion on this website
www.cambridgeenglishteacher.org to share and comment issues about grammar and receive
feedback from my colleagues.

Thirdly, in the past I noticed that my learners sounded unnatural so it could be solved by
developing “Discourse” so I integrated in my syllabus some interaction skills such as turn-taking
and cohesive devices skills to solve this problem. A student told me that he was very pleased
because he had understood that these skills are used in his L1 so the transition from L1 to L2 was
easier for him and he is using them when he is in the class. In the future I am going to experiment
with substitution and ellipsis to make my learners’ spoken language more natural. I am going to
achieve this by reading Michael’s Mc Carthy discourse Analysis for language Teacher and contrast
a real dialogue with a pedagogical one.
