RELAYS WITH OR WITHOUT RECEPTACLE FOR PHOTO CONTROL

Controls For Multiple Street Lighting Circuits

Controls for muliiple street iighting circuits were first required only
for small lighting loads. For these small multiple switching require-
ments, it was natura to classify these magnetic switches as multiple
relays. The continuous association of this identification with the
control for rnultiple street lighting circLrits has estab ished multiple
relays as the accepted designation for the electro-magnetically
operated switches which include the design features requlred for
the control of multiple streei lighting circuits.
Switching of the ON OFF schedule for a street lighting or other
outdoor lighting circuit is easily accomp ished by use of a R'C-oC
multiple relay with characteristics and deslgn features suited to
the appllcation requirements. These controls for multiple street
lighting circuits are avai able with a wide selection of load circuit
ratings, control circuit ratings and built-in protective devices sup-
plied in weatherproof cases with special design features. These
operating characteristics and design features should all be carefully

app ications.

Automatic Switching For Multiple Circuits

For automatic switching,a suitabie relay should be se ected frorn
the chart on page 10. These relays are supplied in weaiherproof
cases with a receptacle for photo control. The photo control used
with these multiple relays establishes the 0N 0FF switching sched-
ule for the connected street lighting load. The photo control must
energize the relay operating coll to c ose the relay load contacts
and must keep the relay coil energized to hold the load contacts
closed during the ON schedLrle for the multiple street lighting circuit.
The load contacts will open when the Type MR re ay operating coi
is de energized.

Remote Control Switching For Multiple Circuits

For remote control switching a relay with suitable characteristics
should be selected from the chart on page 11. The Type MR desig-
nation identifies the relays with the load contacts Normally Open
when the operating coil is de-energized. The control circuit to the
Type lvlR relays rnust be energized to hold the load contacts closed
during the ON schedule. The Type MRR designation identifies the
multiple relay with the load contacts Normally Closed when the
operating coil is de-energized. The control circuit to the Type lvlRR
relays must be energized to hold the relay load contacts open
during the OFF schedule.

Electro-Magnet 0perating Cha racte ristics

The relays shown in the chads on pagesl0and 11 are actuated by
electro-magnets with operating coils rated 120 volts 60 cycles.
Similar relays can be supplied with coils for other voltage and
frequency ratings, but these special requirements must be clearly
specified. Each relay is tested to assure positive operation when
the coil is suddenly energized at 80% of rated voltage. The energized

coil will hold the armature closed unless the voltage at the coil
terminals drops below 60% of the rated value.

Wide Selection of Design Features

The charts on pages 10 and 11 include single pole and two pole
multiple relays rated 30 amperes, 60 amperes and 100 amperes
for use on I2A/24O uall 60 cycle cjrcuits and with the sarne ratings
except for use on 240/480 vot 60 cycle circuits. Applications
requiring relays with operating coils rated other than for 120 volt
60 cycle as covered by the type designation and specification
number shown in these charts must clearly specify the required
voltage and frequency rating.
These charts include information regarding the availability of these
designs with built-in control arrester, oad fLrses, clrcuit breakers
and control transformer. For autornatic control or for rernote control
applications, care should be exercised to specify the type and the
specification number which identifies the switch characteristics,
the built-in protective devices and ihe case design features needed
for the required application.
Excellent Re lia bility
These relays are designed and tested with careful attention to the

to filarnent arnps, fluorescent lamps and mercury larnps for street
lighting and highway lighting circuits. The contact mechanisms
assure a minimurn contact bounce, freedom from contact welding
and a low contact resistance through a long contact life. Periodic
maintenance is not required.
Maxim um Loa d ing
The unfused multiple relays are recommended to carry rated current
continuously without damage to the load contacts or to the associ-
ated parts. The loading of re ays wlth oad circuit fuses must
consider the characterlstlcs of the fuse when energized continu
ously for long periods such as experienced for multip e street
lighting applications. To assure good reliabi ity, the relays with
load circuit fuses should have a maximum oadjng not to exceed

Load Power Facto r

The multiple relays rated for use on a 120 volt or a 240 volt power
supply are recommended for switching street lighting loads with
45% minimum power factor. The relays rated for use on a 480 vo t
power supply are recommended for swltching the primary to the
bailasts for street lighting loads with 85% minlmum power factor.
Load Circuit Fuses
Relays which are specified to lnclude load circuit fuses are sup-
plied with dual element fuses which have an interrupting rating
of 100,000 amperes RMS syrnmetrical at rated voltage. Ordinary
one tirne fuses have from 55"/" to 72% greater resistance than the
duaj element fuses used in the R C O C 30, 60 and 100 ampere
250 volt relays. Good service experience is assured since these
dual element fuses generate less heat. The dual element fuse also
includes a therrnal cutout which provides thermal protection against
unusual heating in the fuse area. When this therrnal cutout reaches
Fic. 15 - Type lvlR-YG 280'F the so der softens the cutout opens and the current is cut
Spec. 6314 two pole multiple relay. off. Ordinary fuses cannot give this protection as their fuse link
must reach 786'rF before it will melt out to interrupt the circuit.
Further assurance of minimum heating in the fuse area of these
relay assemblies is obtained by use of silver p ated copper fuse
grips which have steel spring reinforcement to provide good con-
tact pressure and minimum contact resistance between the fuse
I
ferrule and the fuse grip.
": These dual element fuses also inc ude a lag characteristic which
helps to prevent false operat'on during the transients which can
be experienced in switching the power suppy to sorne types of
.i: ba iasts. A transient during a norma start need not cause concern
ll lf the over-current for up to 10 seconds does not exceed 500% of

Some of therelays ln the chart on page 10 include singlepole mag
netic trip circuit breakers. These breakers must hold 100% rated
load, but must trip at 125% of rated load. These single po e breakers
have an interrupting capacity of 10,000 arnperes at 120 volts and
50OO amperes at 240 volts 60 cycies. The singe pole breakers
provide independent trip following a fault on either of the line-to-
neutral load circuits from a two pole relay. App ications which preier
sirnultaneous tripping of ihe breakers in the two ine circuits must
specify the similar relay except with a two pole circuit breaker'

REMOTE CONTROL PRIMARY OIL SWITCHES

The Type SPR-1-120 single pole oll switch is recommended for

single pole switching of the primary to trans{ormers energizing
outdoor llghting loads. The interrupting capacity rating, the insula-
tion class and the solenoid operating characteristics are included
in the charts on page 15. This switch is recommended for remote
control but includes an auxiliary manual ever on the switch tank
for emergency hook stick operation. The auxiliary hand lever ntust
be in the AUTO position for remote control from the 120 volt 60
cycle control circuit. l\4oving the hand lever to the OFF position
de-energizes the solenoid coil and holds the load contacts open.
Moving the hand lever to the ON position mechanically closes the
load contacts and holds the contacts closed.
The switch load contacts are Normally Open when the coil is de-
energized. The control circuit should be continuously energized to
hold the load contacts closed during the ON schedule for the
Iighting load. The load contacts open when the coi is de-energized.
The Type SPR Specification 6210 designation identifies this switch
in the weatherproof tank cornplete with required oil; however, order
instructions must specify preference for this tank with the crossarm
mounting bracket as shown Fig. 49 or with the bracket for direct
pole or wall mounting as shown Fig.50.

SERIES OPEN CIRCUIT PROTECTIVE RELAYS

The Type PC series open circuit protective relay operates wiih the primary oil
switch to remove the dangerous high voltage which develops when an open
circuit fault occurs in a series lighting circuit, An open circuit fault during the
ON schedule of the series protected circuit causes ihe Type PC relay to de-
energjze the control circuit to the primary oil switch. The Type AN and the
Type SPR oil switch load contacts open when the operating coil is de-energized.
The prirnary to the constant current transformer is de-energized when the oil
switch contacts open.
Operation of the co|trol elernent contacts is delayed by an air dashpot. This
time delay assures reliable operation at the start of the ON schedule for the
series lighting circuit. The standard Type PC relays are adjusted to have.40
second rninirnum to .70 second maxirnum time delay from energizing of the
control circuit to operation of the control element contacts. This short time
delay assures reliable starting and also assures the fast operation wanted when
an open circuit fault occurs in the series protected circuit. The Type pC relay
with multiple control circuit rating is tested to pull in when coil C Fig. 59 is
energized at 80% of rated control voJtage. The Type pC with series control
circuit is tested to assure positive operation when the coil H Fig. 60 is energized
at 85% of rated controi current.
The minimum normal series protected circuit operating range shown in the
chart prevents false operaiion of the Type pC relay if the reduced series current
experienced ufder some starting cor]ditions is not less than this rninimum
value. The series control circuit and the series protected circuit magnets are
insulated for connection in serjes street lightjng circuits on which the oDen
circuit does not exceed 8660 volts.
