That Terrible Evening

You and your family have been out for an evening and when you come home, you
notice the front door is open. As you walk into the house, things are a mess and
many things are missing. You’ve been robbed!

How did you feel to have your house broken into?

How would it feel if it was your grandparents’ house?

How would you feel if it was your best friend’s house?

How would you feel if it was a stranger’s house far away?

Now answer this:

They caught the person who had broken into your house. What are your suggestions for
keeping the person from doing this again?
Empathy: How Would You Feel?
Answer the following questions in a few sentences.
1. If you do not consider other peoples’ feelings, how does that affect your actions?

2. How would your actions be different if you considered the feelings of others?

3. If you were the thief’s friend, what are three different pieces of advice that you could
give to help them think about other peoples’ feelings?

4. How would your world be different if others considered your feelings as important?

5. Now that you have thought about considering the feelings of others, what could you do
to use empathy more often?

(hurt, betrayed, insulted, put down, shamed, threatened, put on the spot, challenged,
embarrassed, controlled, powerless, blamed, insignificant, unimportant, unloved, unwanted,
fearful, guilty, like you are not as good as others, like a loser, etc.)

BECAUSE (why do you think what you did made them feel that way?)

opinion matters, like your feelings matter, like you are not a failure, like you are not a loser,
with honesty, with care, with love, with compassion, with understanding, with dignity, etc.)
