Narrative Report

“Fire is the best servant, but the worst master”

June 1, 2018 was ought to be another ordinary day of the year but the help of
little heat from the fire and from the speaker, last friday was not just any ordinary day
of the year , it was fun, unforgettable, truly last friday was a blast.

Before exactly 1 in the afternoon the two speakers arrived at the venue to give
us lecture regarding fire safety, with the tagline “Ligtas ang may alam, sunog ay
iwasan”.
The speakers were FO3 Suralta and FO3 Jabilles, they are from the fire department,
station located near the City Municipals office. Both looked tough and truly fit to be
men in uniform, but has personalities totally opposite of how they look. They were
funny in a good way and highly knowledgeable.

The lecture started with the viewing of the different fire incidents that took place
in our country from the national level down to the local, from the oldest to the latest fire
incidents that took the life of many and injured a lot of innocent people.
The incident that took place on 1996 that took the life of 160 future professionals of
the country, this are graduating students of a certain university. This was a graduation
ball that turned into a death ball. What happened in Davao city? The latest fire incident
that took place in the city that is characterized as one of the safest city in the world.
Fire that burned down almost an entire mall and killed BPO agents. This incident was
due to the lack of information that should have passed to the people who occupied the
4th floor of the building. Some other incidents were sited to show to us how massive
the destruction could a fire do.

Some important matters that were discuss was the components of fire namely
oxygen, fuel and heat.
Three things that could simply burn down things. The oxygen which is present always
in the environment, the gas that has a lot of forms and that is the most dangerous
among the three and lastly the fuel that has two forms that solid which is everything
we see that can be burned and liquid like, gasoline, oil, etc.
With the absence of just one component makes it impossible for a fire to start but with
the presence of these three, a deadly combination we sometimes do not see or put
emphasis on can turn an event into a disaster. Things like the common kitchen
mistakes we practice and we still practice in the present.
As what one of the speaker said, we are so complaisant about fire that we wait for it
to take place before we act on it.

One thing they thought us when you meet fire face to face, commonly people
would only do either of these three to fight, flight or freeze. Which I believe to be true,
these are the common reaction people do whenever we face certain things that
compromises our safety.
We were also thought how to use the mono ammonium phosphate or know as
fire extinguisher. This is a powder component meant to drive out fire.

The most exciting part is the practicum, where in we were given the chance to
drive out fire. They had light the LPG tank in the part where the gas comes out, this
actually correct my wrong perception about LPG tanks that once they were light them
will explode. This part is what probably everyone enjoyed, personally it gave me the
idea that fire cannot harm you unless you allow it too. But if at some point it already
has damage something you can always prevent it by causing further damage.

After all the fun experience, helpful lecture one thing I cannot forget about their
lecture, their vision. In which I was so pleased to know, they invasion a fire free
Philippines by the time 2034. A vision that can only turn into reality with the help of the
community. It is not enough to have the best fire department in a country to truly
eliminate tragedy caused by fire, but it would need a community that is ready to take
their part as the major stake holders of a country in turning the 2034 visions into reality.
As what one of the speaker said “Filipinos are too complaisant about fire” we don’t
believe in something we don’t experience, we don’t believe in fire because we have
this mind-set that it is not possible. Reality is its possible with a single match, one flick
of a hand, in an instance fire could start, burned down what we build so hard, and take
away what we love. It is also our responsibility, we have to take our part in making this
country a fire free nation anytime soon.

With this one thing important that I get out of this experience, to never play with
fire you will get you’re self-burned with.
