Misspelling

There is a weird old lady that wanders around the neighborhood and with a chalk corrects
every spelling mistake on the signs of the stores. The first time I saw her I thought she was
trying to steal the sign or something. Then I noticed how she had erased the mistaken word
and with round, calligraphic letters wrote the right one.

I invited her one day to come inside for a cup of hot tea with dry mandarins, since she had
corrected my mistake, by erasing “mantarins” and writing it properly, with a “d”. She
thanked me but refused.

I keep misspelling when I write the menu on the blackboard sign to make her come, so I can
insist in my invitation. But every time I get out to take a look, she has already been here,
corrected my mistake with her calligraphic hand writing and gone.

Ανορθόγραφος

Είναι μια παράξενη γιαγιά που τριγυρνά στη γειτονιά και με μια κιμωλία διορθώνει τα
ορθογραφικά λάθη στις πινακίδες των καταστημάτων. Την πρώτη φορά που την είδα
νόμισα ότι προσπαθούσε να κλέψει το μαυροπίνακα που είχα έξω, ή κάτι τέτοιο. Μετά
παρατήρησα ότι είχε σβήσει τη λέξη που έγραψα λάθος και με όμορφα, καλλιγραφικά
γράμματα είχε γράψει το σωστό.

Την προσκάλεσα στο μαγαζί μου για ένα φλιτζάνι τσάι μανταρίνι, μιας και είχε διορθώσει
το λάθος μου, σβήνοντας το «μανταρήνι» και γράφοντάς το σωστά, με «ι». Αρνήθηκε
ευγενικά.

Εξακολουθώ να κάνω ορθογραφικά λάθη επίτηδες, για να την κάνω να έρθει και να
επιμείνω στην πρόσκλησή μου για ένα τσάι. Αλλά κάθε φορά που βγαίνω να ρίξω μια
ματιά, εκείνη έχει ήδη περάσει από δω, έχει διορθώσει το λάθος κι έχει φύγει.
