A brief feminist criticism of the lyrics “Pearl”, by Katy Perry

The lyrics tells the story of a woman that used to live in a way and after met a man
her life changed.
We realize the woman was independent. Probably she had a job, she lived alone.
She appreciates herself. But after met a man everything changes. This is clear on
“She’s a pyramid, but with him she’s just a grain of sand”.
On “She was a hurricane, but now she’s just a gust of wind” we can see the woman
was a strong person with strong personality. Probably this woman suffers some
abuses from the man. “But he’s scared of the light that’s inside of her. So he keeps
her in the dark.” He must has a patriarchy vision of the world and he doesn’t want
she works or she hang out or anything that demonstrates he doesn’t rules the
woman.
When the lyrics tells “oh, she used to be a a pearl” it shows all the value that the
woman associates to herself before meet the man. And now she is “wishing that they
never ever met”. “She’s become a shell of herself”. It means she is losing her value.
“Do you know that there’s a way out?” – Many women think there’s no way
out. They think they’re condemned to live that horrible life. But Many woman are free
now “because no one can take their pearls.”
