Lesson #2 : Quadratic Equations
 Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting the roots

The method of extracting the square root:

The equation x2 = k, where k > 0, has exactly 2 solutions:
x= √k or x= -√k
The solution can also be written as x = ± √k

Solving Quadratic Equation by Extracting the roots:

1. Write the equation with the constant term on the right side.
2. Divide both sides of the equation by the coefficient of x2 .
3. Extract the roots of the left and right sides of the equation.

Examples:
1. 5x2 - 45 = 0
5x2 = 45 write the equation in the form x2 = k
1 1
(5x2 = 45) 5 multiply both sides by the reciprocal of the coefficient of x
5
√𝑥 2 = √9 to solve for x, take both square roots
x = ±3
Solution Set: {3, -3}

2. 2w2 - 38 = 0 solve for w2

2w2 = 38 divide both sides by 2
w2 = 19 extract the roots
w = ±√19
Solution Set: {√19, −√19 }

Try this:
Find the solutions of the following equations:
1. x2 - 25 = 0
5. x2 +9 = 0

2. 4x2 – 7 = 0 6. x2 + 12 =0

3. 2x2 – 8 = 0 7. (x + 3)2 =4

4. 3x2 -9 = 0 8. ( x+2 )2 – 5 = 0

Solve the following problems.

1. A landscape artist uses 35 m2 of bermuda grass to cover a square backyard. Fencing
must be placed around the lawn. Find the length of the fencing needed. Approximate the
answer to the nearest tenth of a meter.

2. The surface area of a sphereis given by the formula S = 4πr2 . Find the radius of a sphere
with a surface area of 90 square meters. ( Use 3.14 for π )
