HATS OFF TO THE IB CLASS OF 2012

IB Seniors enjoyed a special evening recognizing their accomplishments at the annual Senior
Celebration, held on May 23 at the Coliseum. History teacher Ryan Halstead served as master of
ceremonies.
During dinner, a slide show highlighted the students’ four years at SPHS. Entertainment included
songs presented by the SPHS Pitchforks, Olivia Shi, and Aubrey Russak-Pribble; a “dance off” between
Raza Zaidi and Peter Lynch; a musical performance by Any Cressman, Kyle Bulleit, Jeremy Koch and Ben
McBride; and an instrumental performance by Sarah Bostock, Jon Carbungco, and Abizar and Amelina
Gadiwalla.
The class elected Patrick Bradley and Courtnee Connon as Senior Speakers, and both shared words of
wisdom along with humor. Lauren DelVecchio designed the winning t-shirt.
Each student received his or her IB sash from SPHS Principal Al Bennett and IB Director Susan Farias.
The IB faculty performed an original song to salute the seniors and end the evening.

Welcome & Farewell Messages
From the IB Director
It’s hard to believe another school year has passed. It seems like only yesterday that the seniors were Baby Devils,
learning the traditions of St. Pete High and the IB Program. Now, they have completed the rigorous IB curriculum, sat
through days of IB exams, and finally walked across the stage on Stewart Field in the blazing sun and are ready to begin
college. We will miss them all!
We will also miss the parents of our graduating seniors. I would like to thank all of you for your support over the last
four years and for volunteering hours of time to help us in a variety of ways. A special thanks goes to Becky Hoyt, our IB
Booster President for 2011-12. Our parent volunteers have organized and manned many IB meetings, orientations and
Discovery Nights; sold tee shirts; organized the IB Pinning Ceremony; written, folded, stamped and mailed The IB Advocate
newsletter; proctored hundreds of IB exams; scheduled shadows; produced the wonderful IB Senior Celebration; and
provided monthly luncheons for the IB teachers. As long as that list is, I'm sure I have left a few things out!
Of course, as we send off the Class of 2012, it's time to welcome the IB Class of 2016! Many of these students had the
opportunity to attend our first “IB Math (and More) Boot Camp” this summer. In addition to receiving math and world
language instruction, they became familiar with the school and some of our great traditions. Welcome Freshmen! I would
also like to extend a welcome to all new IB Program parents. I encourage you to become members of the IB Booster Parent
Organization and get involved in one or more of the committees.
And so as we kick off another year, 2013 is special because we will celebrate 30 years of the IB Program at St. Pete High-
the first IB Program in the State of Florida. Looking forward to seeing you on August 20th!
Susan Farias
Assistant Principal, St. Petersburg High School
International Baccalaureate Program/Advanced Placement

From the Incoming IB Booster Organization President

Summer is upon us and I hope that everyone is having a relaxed and enjoyable time! Congratulations to our seniors
who have survived their IB experience and will be well prepared for their upcoming college years. There were so many
awards and scholarships last year, we were all very impressed and seeing the rewards for all of the hard work helps keep
the underclassman motivated for next year!
We welcome our new IB families and hope that the “summer camp” was a good introduction to the program. Thank
you to our teachers who generously volunteered their time to help us get our new freshman class off to a great start. The
camaraderie that it started will help the students work together in the coming year, a key to success in the IB program. The
IB Boosters are here to support these efforts and help our teachers help our students excel!
A big thank you goes out to our past IB Booster President, Becky Hoyt, whose masterful organizational skills will make
my upcoming tasks much easier to manage! You can get involved in our efforts by joining or renewing your membership,
and/or by volunteering your time with one of our committees next year. Check out our website by going to
www.stpetehigh.com and click on IB Boosters, join our Facebook group at www.facbook.com/groups/SPHSIBBoosters, or
feel free to email me at Liz.Abernethy@Stantec.com.
Enjoy your summer and see you in the fall!
Liz Abernethy
IB Booster Organization President 2012-13

The IB Mission
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create
a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works
with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international
education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active,
compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
From the Outgoing IB Booster Organization President
As last year's IB Booster President, I'd like to take a few minutes to express my thoughts about the IB Program. The IB
Program is a tremendous program for our students, teachers, administration, staff and parents. My two sons recently
graduated from the IB Program, and they are both off to college. I feel the IB Program prepared them for college better
than any other program in the county. Yes, IB can be rigorous and time-consuming, but my boys understand what
responsibility, dedication, and strong work effort can do for them. They do not regret the time spent in the IB Program, but
instead praise their teachers for the challenges and responsibility put on them.
As an IB parent, I know how important parents are to the students' learning process. Students need our support,
encouragement and praise for every essay or project completed. Giving them extra hugs and listening to them say more to
them than words can express.
As the IB Booster President, I know how important the IB parents are to the IB Program itself. The Booster Organization
provides support to the administration, teachers, staff and students. I encourage each IB parent to become an IB Booster
member. Your support is necessary to give the IB Program the extra touches like the Advocate newsletter, Teacher Wish
List purchases, student celebrations, evening events, teacher appreciation, and so much more. Take this opportunity to join
today, whether it is through a monetary donation, volunteering, or helping with a specific event. I promise you will be
thankful you did.
Thank you for your support last year, and best of luck to all incoming and outgoing parents, students, staff, and
teachers. Due to new district zoning rules, my daughter cannot attend St. Pete IB. Therefore, I will be moving on to support
my daughter in the CAT program at Lakewood High School. I will always remember St Pete High School for its top notch
education and the wonderful experience my boys had. Take every opportunity given to you!
Becky Hoyt
IB Booster Organization President, 2011-12
