compute the maximum value for service load T when A572 G50 steel (f y =345 MPa & f u = 450 MPa). steel is
used, the live load is four times the dead load and the holes are for M16-mm diameter bolts.
(Consider only paths 1-4 , 1-4-5 , & 1-3-4-5).

PROBLEM # 2 (15/40): Select the lightest PAIR of equal angles to support a tensile service Dead Load of
220 kN and a Live Load of 140 kN. Assume the angles are separated back to back by 10 mm and will be
connected to a gusset plate with a single line of four M18 - mm diameter bolts. The tension member is 5.5 m
long. Neglect the block shear, Use A572 G50 steel (f y =345 MPa & f u = 450 MPa).

SOLUTION:

Step 1 : Find the controlling factored load

𝑇𝑢 = 1.4(220) = 308𝑘𝑁
𝑇𝑢 = 1.2(220) + 1.6(140) = 488𝑘𝑁 ⇒ 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍

Step 2 : Find the controlling gross area

a) based on yielding of gross area

∅𝑇𝑛 488 × 1000

𝐴𝑔 ≥ = = 1571.7𝑚𝑚2
0.9𝐹𝑦 0.9 × 345

b) based on fracture of net area

∅𝑇𝑛 488 × 1000

𝐴𝑒 ≥ = = 1445.9𝑚𝑚2
0.75𝐹𝑢 0.75 × 450

Assume U=0.8 ( Case 8 of Table D3.1: four bolts in the direction of loading)

1445.9
𝐴𝑒 = 𝑈𝐴𝑛 → 𝐴𝑛 = = 1807.4𝑚𝑚2
0.8

𝐴𝑛 = 𝐴𝑔 − 𝑛𝑏 (𝑑𝑏 + 4)𝑡
Assume t= 10mm

1807.4 = 𝐴𝑔 − 2𝐿𝑒𝑔𝑠 × 1𝐵𝑜𝑙𝑡 × (18 + 4) × 10 → 𝐴𝑔 ≥ 2247.4𝑚𝑚2 ⟹ 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍

Step 3 : Compute slenderness ratio

𝐿 5500
rmin ≥ = = 18.3𝑚𝑚
300 300

Step 4 : Select a section from the table that satisfy steps 2 & 3

Try 2L70 X 70 X 9 →
𝐴𝑔 = 1190 × 2𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑠 = 2380𝑚𝑚2 ≥ 2247.4𝑚𝑚2 (𝑂𝐾)
Compute rmin for 2 back- to- back angles

rX2L = rX1L = rY1L = 21𝑚𝑚, ey = 20.5𝑚𝑚 (From table)

tG 2
rY2L = √(rY1L )2 + (ey + )
2

10 2
= √(21)2 + (20.5 + ) = 33.03𝑚𝑚
2

𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧 = 𝟐𝟏𝒎𝒎
rmin = 21𝑚𝑚 > 18.3𝑚𝑚 (𝑂𝐾)

Step 4 : Check 𝐴𝑔 based on 𝐴𝑛 AND U

This step is performed because we assumed t=10mm then we selected a section of t=9mm

1807.4 = 𝐴𝑔 − 2(18 + 4) × 9 → 𝐴𝑔 = 2203.4𝑚𝑚2 ≤ 2380𝑚𝑚2 (𝑂𝐾)

Check U :
20.5
𝑈 = 1− = 0.91 > 0.8 𝑂𝐾

PROBLEM # 3 (12/40): Determine the maximum allowable tensile load (30% Dead load and 70% Live load)
for a single channel UPN 280 attached to a gusset plate with twelve M16 mm diameter bolts. Base your answer
on block shear strength only. Use A572 G50 Steel.

SOLUTION:

From Table for UPN280:

𝐴𝑔 = 5530𝑚𝑚2 , 𝑡𝑤 = 10𝑚𝑚

𝐴𝑔𝑣 = 2 × (40 + 75 + 75) × 10 = 3800𝑚𝑚2

𝐴𝑛𝑣 = 3800 − 2 × 2.5 × (16 + 4) × 10 = 2800𝑚𝑚2
𝐴𝑛𝑡 = 150 × 10 − 3 × (16 + 4) × 10 = 900𝑚𝑚2

0.6 × 345 × 3800

0.6𝐹𝑦 𝐴𝑔𝑣 = = 786.6𝑘𝑁
1000
0.6 × 450 × 2800
0.6𝐹𝑢 𝐴𝑛𝑣 = = 756𝑘𝑁
1000

0.6𝐹𝑦 𝐴𝑔𝑣 ≥ 0.6𝐹𝑢 𝐴𝑛𝑣

₀⁰₀ ∅𝑡 𝑇𝑛 = 0.75(0.6𝐹𝑢 𝐴𝑛𝑣 + 𝑈𝑏𝑠 𝐹𝑢 𝐴𝑛𝑡 )

1.0 × 450 × 900

∅𝑡 𝑇𝑛 = 0.75 (756 + ) = 870.8𝑘𝑁
1000

If T is the service load , then D=0.3T & L=0.7T

𝑇𝑢 = 1.2(0.3𝑇 ) + 1.6(0.7𝑇 ) = 870.8
1.48𝑇 = 870.8 ⇒ 𝑇 = 588.4𝑘𝑁 ⇒ 𝐃 = 𝟏𝟏𝟕. 𝟕𝒌𝑵 & 𝐋 = 𝟒𝟏𝟏. 𝟗𝒌𝑵
