Question 7

In the novel, Moby Dick written by Herman Melville, I admire Ishmael as he showed the value o
friendship and loyalty. The friendship between Ishmael and Queequeq is something that I really admire.
Despite the loneliness in the whaling world, warm friendship is shown between them. They get along
very well and take care of each other.

Queequeq is a native of the Pacific Island whereas Ishmael is a sailor who decided to wbecome
a whaler. Both of them met under awkward circumstances. They became good friends after exchanging
their life stories. When Queequeq was sick after the hard work repairing the barrels, Ishmael was always
by his side. Ishmael respected his friend’s wish of having a coffin.
(Accept any reannle ansewer)
Towards the end of the story, Ishmael was helpless when he watched his friend sink together with
their ship, The Pequod. He kept himself alive by climbing onto Queequeq’S coffin and stayed afloat until
he was rescued. I find that Ishmael’s character admirable and rich in great values as he treasures his
friendship with Queequeq and was loyal to him till the very end.

the criteria in the band to confirm. Examiners should assess the script holistically and always
refer to the coordinated scripts for consistency.

The length of the response should not be a criteria in awarding marks. Award marks based on the
quality and relevance of the response.

Question 7

The novel that I have chosen is Moby Dick. The main theme that I have learnt from the
novel is determination. This is shown by different characters from the novel.
First of all, Ishmael is determined. Although he has never been a whaler and he is
discouraged by Starbuck about the difficult job, Ishmael is determined to do it when he gets the
whaling job. He manages to survive the deadly journey.
On the other hand, Starbuck too shows his determination. He is determined to catch as
many whales as he can to go home with a lot of money. He even fights with Captain Ahab when
the captain refuses to stop the ship to fix the broken barrels. The oil is leaking from the barrels
and Starbuck does not want the oil to go to waste.
Lastly, the Captain Ahab is determined to find the white whale. He is willing to sacrifice
the oil to chase after the whale. He offers gold to the first person to see the whale and he will not
help the Rachel to find their missing crewmember. He will do everything he can to get Moby
Dick including the evil deeds.
Overall, we can all learn from these characters and be determined in life.
