mEATMENT SPECIFICATION Title: ZINC PLATING (ELECfRODEPOSITED) WITH
CHROMATE TREATMENT FEDERAL SPC. QQ-Z-325,
TYPE 2, CLASS 2

Treatment Spec Electronic File No.: Tl046.02

Approved:
I. DETAIL REQUIREMENTS:

l. Electro-zinc plate to provide a minimum plating thickness of .0005" (not to

exceed .001").

The zinc deposit shall be smooth, fine grained, adherent, and free from blisters, .
pits, nodules, indications of burning and other defects. Superficial staining
which has been demonstrated as resulting from rinsing, or slight discoloration
resulting from baking shall not l?e cause for rejection. (Federal Specification
QQ-Z-325, 3.2.2. 1-21-52)

2. Metal cleaning and plating processes which minimize the formation of

hydrogen embrittlement should be used for high carbon, higb alloy and
stainless steel parts· having a C40 and higher Rockwell hardness. Whenever
such parts are plated by this specification, it is required that they be baked at
J75 ± 25°F for 3-6 hours within 2 hours after plating and before chromate
conversion coating.

3. Chromate treat either chemical or electrochemical in an aqueous solution of

salts, acids or both, and containing hexavalent chromium and activating acid
radical (s) to produce a continuous smooth protective film distinctly colored
iridescent bronze to brown, including olive-drab and yellow. The articles so
treated shall be thoroughly rinsed and dried according to the requirements for
the particular chemical or electrochemical process used.

The primary purpose of chromate finish is to retard or prevent the formation of

white corrosion products on surfaces exposed stagnant water, high humidity
atmospheres, salt water,. marine atmospheres or exposed to cyclic condensation
and drying. (Federal Specification QQ-Z-34J.....;L.;l~..Q;,...u...,j'-J...~~~I----....
