Welding Wire, Tab Marking Method

RATIONALE

AMS2816W has been reaffirmed to comply with the SAE five-year review policy.

1. SCOPE

This specification covers procedures for tab marking of bare welding wire to provide positive identification of cut lengths
and spools.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

The issue of the following documents in effect on the date of the purchase order forms a part of this specification to the
extent specified herein. The supplier may work to a subsequent revision of a document unless a specific document issue
is specified. When the referenced document has been cancelled and no superseding document has been specified, the
last published issue of that document shall apply.

3. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Cut Lengths

All envelopes shall be marked in accordance with 3.1.1. Individual cut lengths shall be tab marked in accordance with
3.1.2, unless purchaser specifies specification number marking in accordance with 3.1.3 or provides other requirements
for marking.

3.1.1 Envelope Marking

All envelopes shall be identified with a pressure sensitive label marked with not less than the following information:

MANUFACTURER'S IDENTIFICATION

3.1.1.1 Bar Code Marking

When specified, all required identification shall be bar code marked on envelopes or unit containers by a method
acceptable to purchaser.

3.1.2 Tab Marking

Each length of wire shall have applied, between 1/2 to 1 inch (12.7 to 25 mm) from one end, a plastic label bearing the
specification number, including type, class and/or grade designation, and the prefix indicating the source of the
specification. When wire is ordered to an AMS specification in conjunction with other specifications, the wire may be
solely identified with the AMS specification. Revision letters are not necessary. The label may be either pressure-sensitive
adhesive type or heat-shrinkable tubing in accordance with AS478. Imprints on the label shall be legible, fade-proof, and
resistant to oils, solvents, shipping hazards, and temperatures up to 120 °F (49 °C).

3.1.3 Specification Number Marking

When specified in lieu of 3.1.2 tab marking, each length of wire shall be marked, by a method specified by purchaser in
accordance with AS478, with the specification number, including type, class and/or grade of designation, and the prefix
indicating the source of the specification. When wire is ordered to an AMS specification in conjunction with other
specifications, the wire may be solely identified with the AMS specification. Revision letters are not necessary. The
marking method used shall be fade-proof and resistant to oils, solvents, shipping hazards, and temperatures up to 120 °F
(49 °C).

3.2 Spooled Wire

Wire shall not be marked but the outer face of one or both flanges of each spool shall be permanently and legibly marked
with a pressure sensitive label including not less than the following information; if only one flange of each spool is marked,
the marking shall be on the flange of the spool which will face the operator when the spool is installed on a welding
machine and removed in a clockwise fashion.

3.2.1 When specified, all required identification may be bar coded on envelopes or unit containers by a method
acceptable to purchaser.

5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY

6. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

A vendor shall mention this specification number and its revision letter in all quotations and when acknowledging
purchase orders.

7. REJECTIONS

Wire not identified in accordance with this specification, or with modifications authorized by purchaser, will be subject to
rejection.

8. NOTES

8.1 A change bar (l) located in the left margin is for the convenience of the user in locating areas where technical
revisions, not editorial changes, have been made to the previous issue of this specification. An (R) symbol to the
left of the document title indicates a complete revision of the specification, including technical revisions. Change
bars and (R) are not used in original publications, nor in specifications that contain editorial changes only.

8.2 Tab marking is commonly referred to as flag tagging.

8.3 Terms used in AMS are clarified in ARP1917.

8.4 Dimensions and properties in inch/pound units and the Fahrenheit temperatures are primary; dimensions and
properties in SI units and the Celsius temperatures are shown as the approximate equivalents of the primary units
and are presented only for information.
