Study (By John Hopkins Medicine) Suggests Medical
Errors Now Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.
Physicians advocate for changes in how deaths are reported to better reflect reality
Analyzing medical death rate data over an eight-year period, Johns Hopkins patient
safety experts have calculated that more than 250,000 deaths per year are due to
medical error in the U.S. Their figure, published May 3 in The BMJ, surpasses the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) third leading cause of
death — respiratory disease, which kills close to 150,000 people per year.
The Johns Hopkins team says the CDC’s way of collecting national health statistics
fails to classify medical errors separately on the death certificate. The researchers are
advocating for updated criteria for classifying deaths on death certificates.
“Incidence rates for deaths directly attributable to medical care gone awry haven’t
been recognized in any standardized method for collecting national statistics,”
says Martin Makary, M.D., M.P.H., professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine and an authority on health reform. “The medical
coding system was designed to maximize billing for physician services, not to collect
national health statistics, as it is currently being used.”
In 1949, Makary says, the U.S. adopted an international form that used International
Classification of Diseases (ICD) billing codes to tally causes of death.
“At that time, it was under-recognized that diagnostic errors, medical mistakes and
the absence of safety nets could result in someone’s death, and because of that,
medical errors were unintentionally excluded from national health statistics,” says
Makary.
The researchers say that since that time, national mortality statistics have been
tabulated using billing codes, which don’t have a built-in way to recognize incidence
rates of mortality due to medical care gone wrong.
In their study, the researchers examined four separate studies that analyzed medical
death rate data from 2000 to 2008, including one by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General and the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality. Then, using hospital admission rates from 2013, they
extrapolated that based on a total of 35,416,020 hospitalizations, 251,454 deaths
stemmed from a medical error, which the researchers say now translates to 9.5
percent of all deaths each year in the U.S.
According to the CDC, in 2013, 611,105 people died of heart disease, 584,881 died of
cancer and 149,205 died of chronic respiratory disease — the top three causes of
death in the U.S. The newly calculated figure for medical errors puts this cause of
death behind cancer but ahead of respiratory disease.
“Top-ranked causes of death as reported by the CDC inform our country’s research
funding and public health priorities,” says Makary. “Right now, cancer and heart
disease get a ton of attention, but since medical errors don’t appear on the list, the
problem doesn’t get the funding and attention it deserves.”
The researchers caution that most of medical errors aren’t due to inherently bad
doctors, and that reporting these errors shouldn’t be addressed by punishment or legal
action. Rather, they say, most errors represent systemic problems, including poorly
coordinated care, fragmented insurance networks, the absence or underuse of safety
nets, and other protocols, in addition to unwarranted variation in physician practice
patterns that lack accountability.
“Unwarranted variation is endemic in health care. Developing consensus protocols
that streamline the delivery of medicine and reduce variability can improve quality
and lower costs in health care. More research on preventing medical errors from
occurring is needed to address the problem,” says Makary.

court-imposed deadline to reunite migrant children with their parents.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House before departing to Brussels for the
NATO summit, Trump said the problem could be solved if people stopped entering
the U.S. illegally.

Sabraw said Monday that he was "very encouraged" by the Trump administration's
"real progress" in reuniting the families.
“I’m saying this, very simply. We have laws. We have borders," Trump said on Tues-
day. "Don’t come to our country illegally. It’s not a good thing.”
He condemned Democrats fighting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement
(ICE), calling their fight "a disgrace."
"[ICE agents] go into harm's way. There is nobody under greater danger that the
people from ICE. ... We want to support ICE, not what the Democrats are doing,"
Trump said.
Trump said Democrats want open borders and are soft on stopping crime.
"Remember this: Without borders, you do not have a country," Trump concluded.
Donald Trump Nominates Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme
Court
President Donald Trump nominated District of Columbia Court of Appeals Judge
Brett Kavanaugh to fill the impending vacancy of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy
on the Supreme Court.
Trump said Kavanaugh is "considered a judge's judge and a true thought leader."
He served as a clerk for Kennedy.
Kavanaugh offered remarks after being announced by Trump.
He said that he values the fact Trump shows an "appreciation for vital role of the
American judiciary."
"No president has consulted more widely... to seek input about a Supreme Court
nomination," he said."Mr. President I am grateful to you and I'm humbled by your
confidence in me," Kavanaugh said to Trump.
Kavanaugh spoke at length about his family.
He joked that that his daughter's sports teams refer to him as "Coach K." --
a reference to Duke University's championship basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
"I thank God every day for my family," he said.
"I will tell each senator that I revere the Constitution. I believe that an independent
judiciary is the crown jewel of our Constitutional republic," Kavanaugh said in his
speech, as he now awaits his Capitol Hill hearing.
Kavanaugh is a native of the District of Columbia and attended both Georgetown
Preparatory School and Georgetown University.
He was appointed to the appeals bench by President George W. Bush.

“SALT”
One of my favorites is this thing on salt. This is
probably one of the bigger medical ka-kas, this
salt thing. Doctors tell you “Don’t use salt!”
No sodium, because it’s going to give you
hypertension, high blood pressure, it will give
you heart disease, and they have made Americans
paranoid about salt. Now, I’m a veterinarian as
well as a physician. I refuse to believe that my
human patients are dumber than a cow. What’s
the first thing a farmer or a rancher puts out for
his livestock? A big salt block, right? Nobody
gives any restriction on a cow; she goes out and
has all the salt that she wants. Never gets high
blood pressure, and so I always used to tell my
patients “Look, let’s use a little common sense
here. Why don’t you just go ahead and take a salt
shaker, just salt your food to taste, go mad with
the salt. Your body will tell you when to back
off. And 98% of my patients would do it just
because I asked them to do it. And I have been
vindicated in this belief.
This was actually a study that was published in
the NY Times, May 22, 1996, and this study was
abstracted from JAMA, the Journal of the
American Medical Association, and the most
prestigious medical journal in the world,
according to themselves. Now in this particular
journal, a Dr. Alexander Gordon Logan, who is
an epidemiologist and cardiologist on the
teaching staff of the medical school at the Univ.
of Toronto up in Canada, and he took 56 existing
studies on hypertension or high blood pressure
and restriction of salt, combined data from these
56 studies, which included 3505 people. He threw
away all the conclusions and re-evaluated the
larger group and what he found out was this. If
you have normal blood pressure, and you restrict
salt, it will not prevent you from getting heart
disease or high blood pressure. If you have
hypertension or high blood pressure and you
restrict salt, 97% of those with high blood
pressure or hypertension who restrict salt will not
get any measurable benefit. Zero. 2-5% get
measurable benefit, but it’s not significant.
They are only able to reduce their blood pressure
by 3.7mm mercury, so here is what Dr. Alexander
Gordon Logan said in JAMA, May 22, 1996. He
said, “You might as well go ahead and salt your
food to taste”. It’s a meaningless exercise. Don’t
get paranoid about salt. It has nothing to do with
blood pressure problems. There has never been
one single iota of proof that restricting salt has
any benefit.
That’s just one of those medical myths, he called
it, but I’m going to call it a medical “ka-ka”.

phone scam that police detectives traced back to Nigeria, according to reports from a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office
investigation that included help from the U.S. Secret Service. In May 2017, Eric Robinson — a Sarasota County School
Board member and an accountant well known for representing Florida Republican political committees, including Curry’s
— wired $119,797 from one of Curry’s main political committees, Build Something that Lasts, to four different addresses
ranging from Wyoming and Ohio to Missouri. Robinson believed he was doing so at the request of a fundraiser who
works for Curry. The payments were purportedly for catering and consulting services, paid to people with no known
connection to Curry or anyone who runs his political operation.“Robinson had a hard time in distinguishing who was the
real Kevin Hofmann,” police wrote. “Robinson does not have caller ID to identify phone numbers.” Detectives found that
“just prior to any fraudulent activity taking place,” Hofmann’s computer was accessed by an IP address that originated in
Nigeria and that the phone number used to call Robinson by the imposter originated out of Luxembourg. Investigators did
not pursue any leads there because they have no jurisdiction. Investigators have not developed any suspects in the case.
Robinson said some of the transfers were stopped or that police were able to recover some of the money. Otherwise, he
said his firm reimbursed Build Something that Lasts — he estimated it was about $90,000 — by donating to other
political committees he controls and transferring the money into Curry’s committee. On the phone, Robinson couldn’t
recall the names of the committees he used. The latest financial disclosure for Build Something that Lasts shows $90,000
in donations from Making a Better Tomorrow, which Robinson represents, in the months after the fraud scheme. “My
firm (ensured) that no donor money was lost and that we made the PC whole,” he said. “As soon as we were made aware
of the fraud committed against the accounting firm that handles the (political committee) we notified authorities who
launched an investigation that revealed a complex scheme to defraud the PC, including hacking the email of the
fundraiser for the committee,” wrote Tim Baker, Curry’s political consultant, in a statement. “We have strengthened the
internal controls of our firm and increased the level of training specifically in this area for our employees,” Robinson said.
“I don’t speak for the committee,” Robinson said in a 2016 interview. “I just do the accounting.” Detectives apparently
had a hard time tracking what ultimately happened to the money. One address where Robinson sent thousands of dollars
traced back to a Wyoming resident. That resident told investigators a man named David Mark, developed a relationship.

Over Democratic Socialism:
Can It Work in America?
Tucker Carlson debated with Harvard professor Cornel
West over whether or not Democratic Socialism could
be successful in American government.

Prior to the conclusion of the Sheriff’s investigation, an additional attempt to contact
you for an interview was made and as of April 26, you had not completed the interview
with the WCSO nor agreed to meet to discuss the case.
The Sheriff’s Office investigation was completed in conjunction with the State
Attorney’s office for review. All evidence was presented for review. The sheriff’s office
investigation was exhaustive, including interviews of over 40 people including school
staff, parents, students, and reviews of all documents with DCF and Freeport High
School. That investigation revealed there was no evidence to support any allegation you
made; many of the witness statements directly contradict what you provided to the
parents and what was alleged to have been reported to school administration.
The Sheriff’s Internal affairs investigation regarding Deputy Shane Bowers concluded
that the allegations against Deputy Bowers were unfounded under WCSO conduct
standards. DCF investigation also concluded that the allegations abuse/maltreatment
made against paraprofessional Kelly Woodworth were not substantiated. The District’s
investigation also revealed that you lack evidence to substantiate emotional and physical
abuse by various persons at Freeport High School.
Additionally, the District’s investigation revealed that you made Malicious and
intentionally false statements about one or more of your colleagues, failed to maintain
honesty in your professional dealings, and that you also made fraudulent statements and
failed to disclose material facts in your application for a professional position.
Specifically, you claimed to have personally witnessed an Oct. 2017 incident where
Kelly Woodworth allegedly “dumped” a sleeping student out of a desk. Testimony was
provided by Woodworth and Ally Blevins that you were not even in the room on the
date of the incident. Testimony from Mrs. Trainor also revealed you stated to her that
you were not present in the room when you claimed you saw this in an email Feb. 25th
In contrast to this, you told parents that you witnessed the incident, you also told the
same to the Freeport High School Administrators in an email Feb. 18th that you
personally witnessed the incident. That is not true.
In the information you provided the WCSO and the District Investigator; your notes are
inconsistent about the date of the alleged incident. Every date you told someone else it
was changed, even back to Dec. 2017 to parents.
There is no evidence to support your claim that you reported the alleged incident to
Freeport High School administration. Both administrations deny that you reported any
such incident prior to your Feb. 18th email to them. You sent emails and reported
claims made Oct. 2017, stating that the living conditions of the child’s home. DCF
stated no such reports were made, however the investigation into the living conditions
was still open and pending further observation. The district’s office stated also that the
screenshots of the “classdojo.com”, misrepresents the actual content of the materials
regarding the incident. And finally, you told parents of your students that you made
reports to administration regarding this incident, close in time to when you say the
incident occurred, when in fact, you had made no such reports.
There is no evidence to support your claim regarding School Resource Deputy Shane
Bowers and principal Tripp’s interaction of the student on Sept. 2017. as reflected in the
Sheriff’s investigation, detailed above, statements provided to District’s investigator,
neither Deputy Bowers or Principal Hope had inappropriate physical contact with the
student. In fact, Principal Hope had been attending a meeting at the district office and
arrived on scene after the confrontation between deputy bowers and the student ended,
principal Hope walked the student to his office following the incident, where the student
remained until the end of the day.
The District’s investigation also revealed that you made fraudulent statements and failed
to disclose materials facts in your application for a professional position with the
District. Specifically, in your application to the District you: Misrepresented the dates of
employment with the Walton County School District. Your employment was not con-
tinuous as you stated on your application. You were dismissed from a contract period
with Okaloosa School Board. You the resumed employment with the Walton County
school District start of 2001-2002. You were released from the probationary period on
Nov. 2001. You also staed that you have never left employment prior to the end of any
contract. You resigned from one and was terminated from several others.
All dates involving from your employment between School Districts from 2001– 2018.
You are currently employed under a probationary contract as defined and may be
dismissed with or without cause during the term of the contract. The District’s investi-
gation supported the reasons for Principal Hope’s recommendation that your probation-
ary contract be terminated and revealed additional reasons for justifying termination.
Accordingly, I am approving the recommendation and will recommend that the School
Board take action upon the recommendation at the next meeting on May 15, 2018

levels, the basis of inquiries is often whether buying a beach house will be an asset
or liability to future generations. From the frothy assault of the Atlantic Ocean to
the placid trespass of the Lake Worth Lagoon, sea level rise is a mounting concern
for South Florida property buyers who are turning to science, and private
companies, for guidance. The 3-year-old startup Coastal Risk Consultants was
co-founded by the former director of Florida Atlantic University’s Center for
Environmental Studies, and has amassed an advisory board of respected
atmosphere experts from the University of Miami, Pennsylvania State University
and Florida International University. The companies see a market in sea level rise
consultation, but also other climate change-related challenges that traditional
property inspectors and building codes don’t consider — hurricane storm surge,
flooding rains and extreme temperature changes. “I just think as a practical matter,
this is something people should do,” said homebuyer Kevin Kennedy, who ordered
four reports from Coastal Risk Consulting on Palm Beach County properties along
the Intracoastal and on the ocean. “The results discouraged me from purchasing
two of them.” Kennedy said he was surprised to learn the Intracoastal homes were
more vulnerable to sea level rise than a condominium he liked on the ocean. “My
instinct was absolutely wrong,” he said. “I started looking at properties on the

Sailor arrested on child sex charges in DFS
The 35-year-old Navy man charged with attempting to have sex with an
underage girl was among the men targeted in a child sex sting operation
conducted four months ago through the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Corey Dobridnia said 35-year-old Ray Morris
Klett — who at the time of his arrest was a sailor assigned to the guided-
missile destroyer U.S.S. Ralph Johnson based in Everett, Washington — was
communicating with an undercover police officer in early March during an
operation dubbed “Paladin’s Shield.” According to Dobridnia, Klett was
staying in Pensacola at the time, “waiting for his ship to be
commissioned.” The destroyer was commissioned on March 24 in
Charleston, S.C. and then headed for Naval Station Everett. How does anyone know what
Paladin’s Shield was conducted by the Internet Crimes Against
Children Task Force. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office worked in

Alaqua Animal Refuge rescues 67 animals from Washington
County
FREEPORT — Alaqua Animal Refuge has its hands full after rescuing 67 animals last
Friday morning from a home in Vernon in Washington County. Alaqua founder Laurie Hood
said she was made aware of the animals about a year and a half ago when neighbors started
complaining of the noise and smell. The no-kill shelter has been working ever since then to
rescue the 35 dogs, 15 cats, 10 horses, six parrots and a goat. Until Friday, the animals lived
in the home of an elderly woman who struggled to take care of herself, let alone that many
pets, Hood said. “It was very fortunate that she surrendered them, for the animals’ sake,”
Hood said. “That means we can immediately tell people we have them, because otherwise we
couldn’t talk about it if it’s an open case.” Alaqua’s staff, the Washington County Sheriff’s
Office and Washington County Animal Control contacted the owner to say that if she didn’t
surrender the animals to Alaqua, she would be charged with animal cruelty.
The woman was able to keep a couple of small dogs she would be able to take care of, Hood
said. It took about five hours to move the animals from Vernon to Alaqua’s 10-acre facility in
Freeport. “We had a lot of help,” Hood said. “We had Lucky Puppy Rescue (of Bonifay) that
always brings their bus and helps us transport.” The home directly across the street was where
Alaqua rescued about 80 Great Pyrenees dogs a little more than a year ago. According to
Hood, Alaqua has seen dozens of cases like those — with 400 animals being the largest —
since it was founded in 2007.
As of Friday, none of the animals were available for adoption yet. The woman had spayed and
neutered most of the animals, so they are being quarantined for their mental health, according
to Hood. The length of quarantine periods depend on each animal’s situation. Alaqua’s staff
spent most of Friday morning cleaning the animals and testing them for heartworms and other
ailments. Staff and volunteers rushed around the facility bringing dogs from the veterinarians
to their kennels, taking them for walks and giving them affection. Volunteers knelt down to
pet the dogs, who wagged their tails in response. Most of the dogs are smaller breeds and
seemed to be in good health. They were placed in kennels with a lot of space, which they
explored happily.
“A lot of them need socialization,” Hood said. “The cats and the parrots were living in a very
small garden shed. The birds plucked out all their feathers. Almost all the dogs were in her
house with her.” Although plucking out feathers is a sign birds are stressed, they greeted
visitors to their new home by saying “Hello.” An Airstream trailer had been converted to a
bird infirmary earlier Friday.
Almost all the horses are in fairly good condition, Hood said. The refuge kept three of the
more unhealthy horses to be cared for by veterinarians. The rest are being fostered by
neighbors who have large pastures for them to
roam. One horse is malnourished, with most of
her bones protruding. The staff believes she is
older — maybe about 30 years old.

sickly horse. Hood showed them a healthy
40-year-old horse that she said came to the shelter in the same condition, giving them hope for
a full recovery. The lone goat, who is believed to be very old, has rotting hooves that force
him to walk on his knees. Alaqua relies solely on adoption fees, donations and volunteer help.
After Friday’s haul, the shelter needs all the help it can get.
“I always want to help the Sheriff’s (Office) because I’m afraid if we don’t, they won’t be
able to do anything about it,” Hood said. “They’re so grateful when we come in.” Hood said
it’s rewarding to watch how the animals change when they get to the refuge. “They’ve already
changed since we got them here,” Hood said. “They can breathe now.”
