Paradox
: something (such as a situation) that is made up of two opposite things
and that seems impossible but is actually true or possible
: someone who does two things that seem to be opposite to each other or
who has qualities that are opposite
: a statement that seems to say two opposite things but that may be true

Examples
It is a paradox that computers need maintenance so often, since they are
meant to save people time.
As an actor, he's a paradox—he loves being in the public eye but also
deeply values and protects his privacy.

Behaviorism
: a school of psychology that takes the objective evidence of behavior (as
measured responses to stimuli) as the only concern of its research and
the only basis of its theory without reference to conscious experience —
compare introspectionism

Examples
When teachers reward their class or certain students with a party or
special treat at the end of the week for good behavior throughout the
week.
The teacher can take away certain privileges if the student misbehaves.

Metaphysics
: the part of philosophy that is concerned with the basic causes and
nature of things
Ethic
: rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad
: an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad
behavior : a branch of philosophy dealing with what is morally right or
wrong
: a belief that something is very important
Essentialism
1 : an educational theory that ideas and skills basic to a culture should
be taught to all alike by time-tested methods — compare progressivism
2 : a philosophical theory ascribing ultimate reality to essence embodied
in a thing perceptible to the senses — compare nominalism
3 : the practice of regarding something (as a presumed human trait) as
having innate existence or universal validity rather than as being a
social, ideological, or intellectual construct
Idealism
: the attitude of a person who believes that it is possible to live according
to very high standards of behavior and honesty
Realism
: the quality of a person who understands what is real and possible in a
particular situation and is able to deal with problems in an effective and
practical way
: the quality of being very much like real life : the quality of seeming to be
real
: a style of art or literature that shows or describes people and things as
they are in real life
Theology
: the study of religious faith, practice, and experience : the study of God
and God's relation to the world
: a system of religious beliefs or ideas
Cosmology
: the scientific study of the origin and structure of the universe
Aesthetic
: of or relating to art or beauty
Epistemology
: the study or a theory of the nature and grounds of knowledge especially
with reference to its limits and validity
Logic
: a proper or reasonable way of thinking about or understanding
something
: a particular way of thinking about something
: the science that studies the formal processes used in thinking and
reasoning
