The final project for my MAIT 656 class was a difficult task for me
to complete. I had too many ideas that I wanted to incorporate into a
library. After much consideration and research, I found that my ideas
would not work. I had to carefully research different media centers and
quickly found out that most elementary libraries are going to flexible
seating and creating an inviting atmosphere. This is what approach I
took towards revamping my school library. In my project, I created a
rough sketch of my school’s library now and then sketched out what I
would like for it to look like. Below I am going into detail of each
component of my project.
Furniture
Book Shelving
This was an area that I struggled with. I wasn’t sure what kind of
shelving I wanted in the library. Right now we have just book shelves
that are plain. I wanted to try and keep those but revamp some of the
shelving ideas. I am labeling sections in the library. I am putting
together a K-2 section where students will have some curving shelves
along with rectangle book shelves. I will still use the same shelving
system that we do now. I will add decorations later to let students know
what section is what. For the 3-5 section, I am leaving the bookcases we
have now. I am going to arrange them differently and possibly add some
color to the bookcases. I am keeping plain bookshelves for the Non-
fiction section. I wanted to keep the shelving almost the same because
students are familiar with it and I don’t want them to get confused. I
am adding a four sided mobile cart to appeal our new books. I wanted a
display that I could move around but also something that students
would notice (I picked a color called Island).

This is the new layout of the library. I tried to draw the areas better so
you can see from the list of stuff I bought where everything is going to
go. This is what I would change our Media Center to.
