MAIT 656 Final Project

The final project for my MAIT 656 class was a difficult task for me
to complete. I had too many ideas that I wanted to incorporate into a
library. After much consideration and research, I found that my ideas
would not work. I had to carefully research different media centers and
quickly found out that most elementary libraries are going to flexible
seating and creating an inviting atmosphere. This is what approach I
took towards revamping my school library. In my project, I created a
rough sketch of my school’s library now and then sketched out what I
would like for it to look like. Below I am going into detail of each
component of my project.

Furniture

The furniture in my library is very much outdated. I did want to

keep some of the tables but very few. The tables that I wanted to
incorporate is activity white board tables for interactive learning and
café style tables. I am also adding some smaller tables for the younger
kids to enjoy. I left a few of our tables in the mix. I am adding some
Jupiter tables and stools for the younger kids along with the seating at
the other tables. This allows flexibility in the library for students to
come and work. There will also be a STEM room and Maker space I will
add later. I did order some new style chairs that allows for flexible
seating.

Book Shelving

This was an area that I struggled with. I wasn’t sure what kind of
shelving I wanted in the library. Right now we have just book shelves
that are plain. I wanted to try and keep those but revamp some of the
shelving ideas. I am labeling sections in the library. I am putting
together a K-2 section where students will have some curving shelves
along with rectangle book shelves. I will still use the same shelving
system that we do now. I will add decorations later to let students know
what section is what. For the 3-5 section, I am leaving the bookcases we
have now. I am going to arrange them differently and possibly add some
color to the bookcases. I am keeping plain bookshelves for the Non-
fiction section. I wanted to keep the shelving almost the same because
students are familiar with it and I don’t want them to get confused. I
am adding a four sided mobile cart to appeal our new books. I wanted a
display that I could move around but also something that students
would notice (I picked a color called Island).

Seating

For seating, I wanted to incorporate more Flexible seating since

this is something we are doing as a school. I added some activity tables
with new chairs, Jupiter tables with Jupiter stools, benches, rugs, and
different types of stools. I wanted to keep regular sized tables and
chairs for classrooms that wanted to work in the media center. As the
year progresses, I will probably find some more flexible seating ideas
but I didn’t want to incorporate too much up front. I am also going to
look around and see if we can get someone to build a stage or see if I can
get a stage donated to our school to use in the corner of our library.

Technology Integrated and Devices available.

I will have a technology lab with 30 desktop computers. I will have

two learning areas that will have desktop computers and I will have an
area that has an iPad cart with iPads that the district is giving our
school library. I will have two projectors with two screens. I will also
have a section that has a row of computer for students to come in and
research quickly. We already have software and hardware purchased
for the school that we have to use. I will not purchase any new
hardware or software at this time.

Personnel

This was a decision made by our principal but we will have a

Media Center/Blended Learning coach with a technology degree
running our school library. They will have an office inside the library
where they will work but will have to move across the school to help
with technology. I believe that this one person cannot do all the library
and technology needs by themselves, so I would recruit fifth grade
students to help with the library like Library Assistants or hired
volunteers to help each week. We are trying to get more volunteers to
help in our school so this would be a great way to evolve the community.

Additional Information

I want to turn two rooms in a STEM room and MAKER SPACE

area. For the STEM room, this is a project I would like to start this
year. As for Maker Space, I will invite teachers I give away any extra
supplies like art supplies or tinker toys to put into this area. I will also
see if I can get donations or grants to supply both of these rooms.

Hand-drawing of library

This is the current layout of the library at my school.

Hand-Drawing of the Library

This is the new layout of the library. I tried to draw the areas better so
you can see from the list of stuff I bought where everything is going to
go. This is what I would change our Media Center to.
