How to Upholster your

Footstool

Step 1 - Cut Fabric

Notes;

- Fabric needs to be large enough to cover;


- Face of sponge
- Thickness of sponge
- Extra 20mm for stapling on back
of base
- Choose a fabric that is easy to work with.

Step 2 - Apply Glue

Notes;

- Apply a liberal amount of glue to base.


- In this case normal wood working glue has been
used, there other products on the market
specifically for these materials.

Step 3 - Glue Base to Sponge

Notes;

- Place base on sponge.


- Marking tape can be used to hold materials
together until glue dries
- Sponge can be shaped beforehand to
provide a different look to project.

Step 4 - Lay Fabric Flat on Bench

Notes;

- Make sure workspace is clean to avoid


staining or tarnishing material.
- Avoid wrinkles at this point as they may stay.

Step 5 - Place Sponge and Base on Fabric

Notes;

- Make sure sponge is in contact with


fabric.
- The sponge and base needs to be
centered.

Step 6 - Fold Fabric onto Base

Notes;

- Start on a short edge.


- Fold baric as shown in the image. (20mm
on base)
- Do not pull material too much as there
won’t be enough material for the other
side.

Step 7 - Apply Staples

Notes;

- Start by placing a staple in the centre. (you will


need to mark this).
- Place more staples along edge. (aprox every
50mm-100mm)
- Do not space staples more than 100mm apart as
the fabric may stretch.

Step 8 - Complete Staple on Both Short
Sides.
Notes;

- Complete staples on both short


sides first.
- Remember to evenly space staples.

Step 9 - Fold Corners

Notes;

- Fold corners as shown in the image.


- Make sure creases follow the edges
and that the material is folded neatly.

Step 10 -Complete one Side at a Time

Notes;

- Make sure staples are evenly spaced.


- Ensure material is neatly folded.
- A staple should be on either edge to avoid
material flapping around.

Step 11 - Complete Last Side as
Previously Shown
As seen in the image;

- staples are evenly spaced.


- Material contains an even amount of
overhang.
- All folds are neatly executed.

Step 12 - Completed Product

Notes;

- Turn cushion over after checking all staples


have seated properly.
