CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM IT ITS’ BACKGROUND
Introduction

Teenagers today are having a hard time on knowing themselves more which leads

them to bad conclusions, such as making themselves believe that they don’t really belong

in the society. The researcher believes that the reason that leads them to think of bad

conclusions, it’s because of the following: lack of attention, family problems, no sense of

belongingness and protection to the bullies. In this kind of situation, they need a place to

feel comfortable, a friend, and a sense of belongingness which leads them to join an

organization which is the Fraternity.

Previous researchers made about this study but they take serious in colleges that

enter fraternities, such as Fraternities and Sororities Impact Students, which explains how

college students started joining the organization. There is also a previous study about this

study but they also take serious in colleges which include drinking alcohol and drinking

problems among Greek and residence hall students.

The purpose on pursuing the study is to give a better understanding about the

Fraternities so that the researcher will be able to give good information about the study.

The researcher would also want to find the cause and effects on why teenagers join this

organization so that the researcher will be able to evaluate the factor that leads them to

join in the fraternities and lastly to be able to find the main reason why they wanted to

join. Finding these reasons will be able to give a better understanding to the community

especially those parents that their children are members of the fraternity.
2

Theoretical Framework

According to the information that the researcher found, Fraternities is somehow

comparable to gangs as they are both organization of people. However, gangs usually

lack of purpose and acceptance to communities. Usually it links with violence because

members tend to compete with each other. Unlike in fraternity, members have these

humilities to help each other out and protect each other from the outsiders. A person

usually joins a fraternity is to be recognized and be a part of something. The idea of

having some-“buddy” gives a feeling of confidence and security.

One fact teenagers having a hard time in school is bullying. Bullying includes

behaviours that focus on making someone else feel inadequate, or focus on belittling

someone else. Bullying includes harassment, physical harm, repeatedly demeaning

speech and efforts to ostracize another person. Bullying is active, and is done with the

intention of bringing another person down. In these days, most of the bullying is

sometimes in Verbal, Emotional, Physical and most of all, Cyber Bullying. In some

cases, bullied teens have violent fantasies of attacking their tormentors. There are

instances in which these teens become violent, turning on their classmates in order to get

revenge. This causes teenagers started to join organization for needs of protection and

most of all acceptance.

It is not only school that makes teenagers join in the fraternity, but all some cases

come from the start at home especially those parents are in divorce. During divorce

parents can become very self absorbed or distracted, leading to them giving less attention
3

to their kids. This results in teens becoming very insecure about the nature or their

relationship with their parents and feeling isolated or anxious.

Before the experiment will start, the researchers have to complete the things needed. The

first table shows the material which is the first one is that the researcher will first gather

information such as the factors about the fraternities. The second is sets of teenagers that are the

once who will take the questionnaires in Dauin National High School. After that, the researchers

will start to survey the questionnaires to the teenagers and after the survey, the researcher will

start gathering the survey and start tally and gather information of the questionnaires that the

teenagers were able to take and the results will come up the Factors that leads teenagers to join

Fraternities in Dauin National High School. This process will help the researcher come up better

information and facts that will give better understanding about fraternity and also teenagers.
4

Statement of the Problem

The aim of this research is to find the root cause on why teenagers want to join the

organization such as Fraternity. Specifically, this study will seek to answers the following

question:

1. What is the exact population of teenagers joins the fraternity?

2. What are the main reasons they join fraternity?

3. What are the activities that their organizations do?

4. What kind of relationship do the students have with their parents?

5. What are the perspectives of the students if they join this organization?

Hypothesis

For better understanding of the study the following hypothesis were formulated:

1. The results of this study shows that some teenagers want to join fraternities because of

their following reasons:

a. Sense of belongingness

b. Protection

c. Family Problems

d. Attention

e. Money

2. The result of this study does not show that some teenagers want to join fraternities.

3. The study shows that some teenagers don’t want to join fraternities.

4. The study show that some teenagers do wants to join fraternities

5

Basic Assumption of the Study

A teenager is the second level of growing and it is the stage where the human kids started

to develop different things and also, they need to know about themselves. They needed to be

guided and love because it will give a good background to them and lead to a better

understanding. Some teenagers having a hard time on their lives because of bullying, no sense of

belongingness, lack of attention and most of all, family problems that leads them to conclude that

they will join a group which will satisfies their needs and that’s Fraternity

Fraternity is an organization where people develop trust, sense of belongingness and

friendship. These things gains confidence of themselves and most of all, protection which means,

that if any of them are trouble, they have to help each other which leads to violence. This is the

reason why teenagers who join fraternities gain troubles whenever they meet people who judge

them especially their enemies. Fraternity can also satisfy the needs of the teenagers but it can also

lead to harm.

Scope and Limitation

This study is concerned mainly how much of population of teenagers wants to join

fraternity and their main reasons. This study will take place in Dauin National High School,

Negros Oriental. Before the researcher will conclude on this study, the researcher has to survey

first and will be able to see the factors that lead teenagers to join this kind of fraternity.

The researcher would like to say that, the researcher have their own limitation in this

study. This study only seeks the main causes and reasons why teenagers want to join this kind of

organisation.
6

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to see the factors why teenagers in Dauin National High

School want to join fraternities.

To all the teachers most especially the guidance councillor, this study would let them see

the fact why they join the gang and because of that, they need to guide them and give adviser so

that they will be able to avoid wrong conclusion. To those teenagers who were bullied, they need

to talk the bully so that they will stop the bad attitude of the bully before the victim starts to turn

against him/herself.

To all parents, this will enable to become more aware of the situation of their children.

This will motivate them to give their full attention and love to their children more than

themselves and most of all; they need to guide them so that their children won’t join in this kind

of organization.

To the teenagers, they will enable to help them on their problems in a small way. They

have to give good influence and befriend with them so that they will be able to feel the sense of

belongingness. The teenagers will have to stop bully them to avoid misunderstanding that lead to

fight and bad conclusion.

To the Barangay Captain in every part of the town of Dauin will be able to secure the

places properly to prevent street fights. In case if one of their Barangay Tanod captured one or

two or more member of this fraternity, they will have to talk with them so that they will be able to

understand why they they’re capture and also, they will have to talk to their parents. That way,

parents will be able to guide their children like that it was stated in the other significance.

Definition of Terms

Teenager- it is where stage of adolescence started to tease somebody and it also includes

physical harassment.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
Related Literature
The researcher is trying its best to make this research as successful to, contribute

information to give a better understanding to this study. In this chapter, the researchers

gather more information that explains further and supports the study. Here are some set

of related literature that the researchers were able to find in every different author and

websites that lives in their respective countries and of course, including the Philippines.

This source stated that there are six reasons why guys join fraternities but it stated

that this six reason might be the possibly reasons of joining this organization. The first (1)

and most common reason why guys join fraternities is because they are looking for

acceptance, second (2) reasons why guys join fraternities is as a resume builder, third (3)

is for the leadership experience, fourth (4) reason is because their friends are joining and

they don’t want to be left behind, fifth (5) is to meet girls and the final reason is for

parties.( http://thefraternityadvisor.com/reasons-why-guys-join-a-fraternity/) In some

website the main reason why teenagers are attracted to frats it’s because fraternity which

means in this organization is brotherhood. Brotherhood is a relationship which we shared

to our fellow brothers and relatives which is this is the main reason why they were

attracted to it and the best thing in this organization is that you have an equal rights,

responsibilities, power and almost everything. Like for example the passing of leadership

to you which is the most core of favourable desire that the teenager wants. Before you are

going to be an equal member of the gang, you need to undergo hazing which cause lots of

teenagers died but the website stated that their death has an alternate reason whether it
9

was an accident or on purpose. (http://expertscolumn.com/content/fraternity-all-about-

brotherhood) Other sources stated that there is an issue called self-selection which means

that “there may be something about people who join Greek-letter organization—

extraversion, risk-taking, excitement-seeking and so forth- that sets them apart from the

non-joiners.” There also said that there might be changes between the non-joiners and the

joiners of the organization because of their behaviours or attitude towards years passes.

sororities-impact-students-or-do-they). As the researcher scans the other sources that the

researcher was able to gather in the internet, the researcher discovered 15 facts about

fraternity and sorority. The researcher only gathers the most important facts that were

related to this study. The first (1) fact that women that are joining fraternity are more

likely to have physical issues such as sexual life, the second (2) is that fraternity more

likely to abuse alcohol, and lastly the third (3) is White fraternities typically use alcohol

as a hazing tool, whereas black fraternities traditionally use physical violence.

Fraternity also has advantaged and disadvantages of joining this organization. The

advantages are that the excitement and fun experiences which is meeting a lot of people

which also like training to them for meeting the society. In short, they were able to gain

confidence and as for disadvantage is that you have to greet them or known for them as a

“rush week”. Rush week for them is like showing the things that you can do or impress

them so that they will be able to like them. (http://www.helium.com/items/1890582-

college-life-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-joining-a-fraternity-or-sorority ) As the

researcher surf around the internet, the researcher encounters a website which explains
10

about the reasons that causes teenagers to join fraternity. Like what other sources stated is

that they want acceptance but there are other cases which causes them to join in the

fraternity. The first on the list is to make money which causes them to do illegal stuffs

like stealing. The second is peer pressure which is cause for the influence of their friends

who were joining this organization. Lastly, the third is curiosity, which gives more

attraction to the teenagers. Believe it or not, but some teenagers join fraternity because

they want to have fun while others is that they want to let go of their problems.

(http://www.whyguides.com/why-do-people-join-gangs.html ) There are more reasons

why teenagers want to join fraternity. In this website, the researcher was able to find

more information about teenagers joining this organization. Unfortunately, this website

talks about gang but still gang has a connection to fraternity. It is not only acceptance that

they seek and protection but, they stated that the cause which they entered this

organization it’s because some of their family members is a member of that particular

organization or also known as “a family legacy”. Not only that but also they seek,

structure and discipline. They seek these things it’s because it says that “predictability of

being a gang as opposed to the unpredictability of a parent who might be high or drunk”,

which means some parents are not doing their responsibility and a role model to their

children.( http://teens.lovetoknow.com/Teenagers_Joining_Gangs ) There is also another

website which also talks about teenagers joining gangs which explains exact cases which

causes them to join in the organization. Some might be similar to the other sources that

the researcher was able to find but the researcher only includes the things that weren’t

include in other sources. The website stated that the addiction of drugs causes them to

have more problems because parents doesn’t know how to cope up, some teenagers were
11

grown in a kind of a neighbourhood which its way of life is totally bad and lastly, some

teenagers prefer to stay streets rather than at home because of the problems which they

carried. (http://www.gangsandkids.com/gwhyjoin.html )

Some other books that the researcher were able to find is that teenagers might

have experience a bad childhood like they were neglect by their parents. In that situation

the output of their childhood experience considering now will tend to have low self-

esteem and other difficulties in life such as higher incidence of school dropouts and

delinquency. (Westen Drew, Butron, and Kowalski, 2005) In some resources of books in

the net, the researcher only gathers its information that is connected to this researcher.

This are the following factors that leads them to join the fraternity or gang: Victimization

which is involves bullying, and Negative life events which they have bad issues in the

pass which is under Individual Risk Factors, Family Risk, School Risk and lastly

Community Risk.(Howell, 2010) Other books also stated that joining gangs gives life

becoming brighter or even better, makes them feel that they are useful and important,

protects each other from a violent environment especially if they have a rival gang and

provides some sense of safety with each other. (Kinnear 2009)

The Philippines, fraternity is like a brotherhood, like what was stated from the

other source but only one reason was a similarity which is acceptance. Fraternity gives

them confidence which makes you feel more secure and importance to the group. The

source stated that middle school students such as teenagers are the once join fraternities

because of protection and some universities joined because it was an “elite” group of

particular department, division, and/or course of

study.(http://en.wikipilipinas.org/index.php?title=Fraternities_in_the_Philippines) In
12

ABS-CBN News website stated that joining fraternities can help you pass the bar exam.

It stated there that if you are a member of a fraternity he/she will be help by the senior

fraternity to pass the Bar Exam. It also stated there that some students who where joining

fraternity came from a bad background which is a broken family, parents working abroad

or are illegitimate child. (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/-depth/02/23/12/what-lures-

students-join-law-school-frats )In some newspapers stated that fraternity give youth a

sense of belongingness but this organization gives trouble to the society such as

vandalism which we can find them each and every wall in Metro Manila. Others do

physical contacts such as beating their rivals and also, humiliating and torturing helpless

beginners which is the newcomers in violent rites. Lots of teenagers lost their lives and

some victim of hazing was decapitated. (Brotherhood of Thugs, 2000) At the month of

August, 2010, the news stated that they were able to capture 16 APO members which a

fraternity organization. “Senior Superior intended Friol Bonifacio, the Chief of Makati

Police identified 5 of the members who were charged with violation of the law which is

Republic Act 8049 which is the anti-hazing law”. The news stated that officers and

members who were participating in the hazing will be formally charge in place. Some

members started to admit their doing and also the police were able to track down the

body of Intia which was located at the Marcus Highway in Barangay Laguna, Sta. Maria,

Laguna at Aug. 15. (Clapano, 2010)

As the researcher scan through the pages of the newspaper the researcher was able

to catch something very shocking which is a fraternity student murdered their teacher it’s

because “the teacher maintained that the boy got irritated when that victim teacher who

died told him to have proper haircut or he would be expelled in his classes.”(Pete Laude)
13

Governor Joey Lina authorized the “Anti-Hazing Law” enacted in1995 when he was still

a senator and now this law was already known as Republic Act 8049. The law stated that

life imprisonment is the punishment to those who do the hazing which the researcher

discovered that hazing has different forms which is they did it for fun. (Deadly Fraternity,

1998) Some fraternity are not totally into violence like what the researcher read in the

Philippine Star Opinion. A former leader stated that the decision was only depend on the

fraternity leadership like what he did to his fellow members. He tries to calm them down

and telling them that violence beget violence which he gives them a choice whether he

will change first an adviser so that the members can avenge or not. Some alumni stated if

one member doesn’t like the member of another organization, they will undergo hand-in-

hand combat and if they will get tired, they will shake hands and retrieve back to their

group. This shows that long time ago, fraternity was not totally into violence but they

showed respect and being a good sport. (Fernandez, 2007)

From the information that the researchers collected, the researcher were able to

find that this related literature has the connection to the study but some also it also focus

to some other department such as college. The information also say that even young

fraternities can also do crimes whether it’s the country’s law or in the schools law. The

researcher also discovers the main reasons why teenagers want to join fraternities which

are the common cause are that they need sense of belongingness, confidence to face the

society, protection and lastly leadership. It is not only that they seek, but also they wanted

structure and disciplined and lastly, causes them to join the fraternity it’s because of

addiction. The researcher also discovered that not all fraternities are into violence and

lastly some teenagers want to join this organization just for fun and doesn’t care any
14

consequences. This research was able to give lots of information which will give a better

understanding.

THE INFLUENCE OF FRATERNITY OR SORORITY MEMBERSHIP ON THE

LEADERSHIP IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT OF COLLEGE STUDENT

LEADERS By ANITA JO CORY, Ph.D.

A dissertation for the degree of DOCTOR of PHILOSPHY WASHINGTON STATE

UNIVERSITY College of Education

Active participation in campus organizations is an integral component of the

undergraduate student experience, with meaningful involvement serving as the catalyst

for persistence, relationships with peers, and the development of leadership. The need for

the present study is twofold. First, although there is extant empirical work that examines

the effects of the fraternity and sorority experience on college student development, very

little descriptive or theoretical focus on this subset of students exists in the literature.

Second, leadership development is an important aspiration shared by institutions of

higher education and fraternities and sororities, but little scholarly work exists that

considers the process by which one develops an identity as a leader. Framed by an

understanding of organizational culture, college student development, and emerging

explanations of the process of leadership identity development, the present qualitative

study examines the influence of fraternity and sorority membership on the leadership

identity development of college students. The findings derived from semi-structured

interviews with fraternity and sorority leaders illustrate the contexts and cultures in which

the participants develop an identity as a leader. In addition, the study describes the

processes and experiences that facilitate or hinder development.

15

Nominated by fraternity and sorority life professionals, twenty-one undergraduate

members of fraternities and sororities at three research institutions in the western United

States participated in the study. Campuses included in the present study possess similar

characteristics regarding the fraternity and sorority community and all are major, state

supported institutions. The findings suggest organizational factors and meaningful

relationships cultivate the development of an identity as a leader for fraternity and

sorority members. Further, the study provides support for advancing practical

applications of the theoretical construct of leadership identity development. The study

concludes with recommendations for program development, practice, and further

research.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

Introduction

The researcher will present the research design and also its methodology of the

upcoming plan and implement for the study that will help the researcher to achieve its

goals for this research. This chapter describes on how the researcher were able to do this

study through the following: the researcher will present the research design and the

methods that the researcher on how to gather, analyzing and interpreting the data

obtained the study, including the sampling, data collection, ethical consideration and data

analysis.

Research Design

The method used was descriptive type of research that made use statistical method

with the aids of questionnaire. This type of research will help the researcher from

describing and interpreting the day but most importantly, it can help gather more

information about this study.

Respondents

The correspondents or rather the respondents of this study are the one thousand

two hundred ninety populations of the teenage students in the school Dauin National

High School at the location in a small town named Dauin. These respondents are the once

that are members of the fraternity or not a member in the fraternity. The research will
17

reduce this population since this is a huge population and it will be shown in the

Sampling Design

Research Instrument

The researcher used a self-made questionnaire that gathers data for this study. The

questions are originated in the specific questions that were stated in the statement of the

problem. After that, the questionnaires are distributed to the correspondents which are the

population of the teenagers.

Sampling Design

The research will reduce this population since the population is huge and it is

impossible for the researcher to give the survey to the teenagers. The research uses the

sampling to reduce the population. The research uses the Solvins’ Sampling. The

researcher uses the Solvins’ Sampling because it gives more comprehensive data.

Formula: n= N/ 1 + Ne2

n- The exact population that the researcher will used to survey

N- The population of the teenagers In Dauin National High School

(e2)- The error or the percentage.

The error or the percentage uses the researcher is 50% to get the population.

Solution:

Three hundred and five of the teenage population in Dauin National High School
should be the once to be given survey.

Statistical Treatment of Data

This is the only the researcher used for the data gathering:

Simple Percentage

The data gathered in this study shall be presented as percentages. Each response

shall be recorded and tallied. The sum will them be compared to the total number of

respondents and the percentage determined by using the formula,

P = n x 100

where: P = percent,

n = number of responses, and

N = total number of respondents.

19

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYISI AND INTERPRETATION OF

DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered by the researcher to be able to answer the

following specific questions:

Specific Question #1. What is the exact population of teenagers joins the fraternity?

Question # 1: Have you joined a fraternity?

Figure 1 The Population of Students that joins Fraternity

8%

Yes
No

92%

In this table, the researcher was able to identify the population of students who

join the fraternity. As the table display the output of the survey, majority of the students

in Dauin National High school are not a member of the fraternity which has a percentage

of 92% while there is a minimum of students who were a member of a certain fraternity

which also has a percentage of 25%.

20

The researcher also discovers that some of this 25% population who answered

YES are not an exact member of the fraternity that the researcher usually explains in

Chapter 2. Some of these students are members to a fraternity but not a fraternity that

usually founds in the streets, caught by the police and be suspended in the school because

of it. The kind of a fraternity that they entered is like a gang who contributes help in the

community or a simple gang group who wants to hang out with teenagers who are not

into bad influence.

Specific Question # 2: What are their main reasons why they join fraternity?

Question # 2: What made you decide join this fraternity?

In this table, the researcher identified which of the reason stated in the

questionnaire that makes them join the fraternity considering the results are having ties.

24% has a tie with the common reason which is the Sense of Belongingness and Family

Problems. Other result that has a triple same percent which is 12% under the response is

the following: Protection. Attention and Leadership. The last result which has another tie
21

of 8% under the response of the following: Money and also the certain people who are

not sure of their reasons on why they join this organization.

The results of this table show the main reasons why they wanted to join the

fraternity. The researcher was able to identify that the common reason now a days that

they join this organization is the Family Problem and Sense of Belongingness. The others

who have the ranks of 2 and 3 seem minimal for the teenagers to make them think to join

this organization. I believe those teenagers who are joining a good fraternity has also has

the same reason with the other fraternity.

In these results, we can base it from the theory found between this following

websites: whyguide and wikiphilipines that it stated that the reasons that they want to join

fraternity is that they want to be accepted. Accepting people is like you’re seeking a sense

of belongingness.

Question # 3: Are you satisfied with the fraternity you have joined?

In this table, the researcher sees the satisfactory of the members in their different

fraternity and also it explains the statues relationship between you and your fellow group

mates. 56% of the members have an excellent relationship which means; he/she has no

problem and was very satisfied enough. 16% has a very good relationship and has

minimal problems with the group which is under the Very Satisfactory. 12% chooses

moderate which means there are some circumstances that he/she has a little problem with

himself/herself or with the group or 65-35 chances relationship. 8% of the members are

unsure on how to base on their relationship in their respective organization. 4% of the

members are satisfied which 50-50 chances that they have a bigger and a lesser fight and

a balance like relationship while as for another 4% which choose Poor which means that

he/she has a big regret that they entered this organization or somehow, some members

never give, him/her a welcoming aura.

The results of this table shows how the teenagers feelings after they entered this

organization or somehow, are they happy that they are inside in this organization. It also

has a connection with the Figure 2 because, the research can identify that joining this

organization will make them happy or they might still miss something. The researcher

only can say that majority of the population that rated Excellent which means that they

are really happy enough to stay or a lot more satisfied to stay in the group which means,

they are completely welcome while the other who answered Poor somehow has a little bit

of regrets of himself/herself or, they are not really satisfied yet on their needs, especially,

if you are joining in this kind of organization.

Speific Question # 3: What are the activities that their organizations do?

Question # 4: What activities do your fraternity provides?

In this table the researcher can see the exact activities that the fraternities usually

do. 44% of the teenagers choose For Fun. A triple same percentage of 12% which is

under in the category of the following: Go to the club, Looking for victims, and lastly

Street fight. Others are tie with the percentage of 8% by the following category: For

sexual pleasure and Undecided response. Lastly 4% of teenagers choose Do illegal things

that against the law.

This result implies that a number of teenagers choose For Fun which means that

they don’t take things seriously even though they are involve with a dangerous

organization. The following who receive triple results which means that their

organization sometimes Go to the club, looking for victims to make fun or mess with and

also, Street fight between foe to foe gang. Another tie which other gangs seeks for sexual
24

pleasure that makes them satisfied and those who are under Undecided response, 8% of

the teenagers sadly skip this question which means that some of these activities are not

beyond in their organization. Other gangs do illegal stuffs even though they no it’s

wrong; they still want to do it.

In these results, we can base it in Chapter to by this following website: why guide,

zen college and fraternity adviser which is the following activities are presented with

each explanation especially those fraternity went to the club just to look for girls, stealing,

and having a sexual activity.

Specific Question # 4: What kind of relationship do the students have with their parents?

Question # 5: Do your parents care for you? Why not?

In this table, the researcher was able to identify the population of students who

has a different relationship status of their parents. As the table display the output of the
25

survey, majority of the students in Dauin National High school are having a good

relationship with their parents with a percentage of 92%. Another is that 8% of the

population has a problem with their parents or having a conflict with their relationship

status while only 1 undecided response of a uncertain respondent with a percentage of 0%.

The result implies that a good of population of the teenagers are having a

good relationship with their parents at home who mean that they are certainly guided by

their parents while minimum of the teenagers seems to have a bigger problem with their

parents which will be explained by Figure 5.2. As for 1 respondent which means that

he/she is unsure with their relationship.

have small months to spend time with them.

The results implies that some parents doesn’t give their fully attention to their

children which leads them to conclude that they are not loved. This type of relationship

will strongly lead them to join this organization especially those parents who works

abroad and are always focus at work. The parents are not always there to correct their

mistakes which also lead them to friends with bad influence, especially if it is a member

of a fraternity and parents might also have a hard time to cope up the things which they

missed like birthdays, graduation, or any event that are important to them.

These results can be based by this website: gangs and kids who explain that

parents don’t know to cope up with their children. This happen especially those who were

at abroad. They will have a hard time to understand with each other and worse, the

children might think of them as strangers rather than a parent.

the people whom they’ve hurt, especially their parents and those bullies in school but

usually, it was the lack of attention of parents that leads them to join in. Like what the
