Assignment title Assignment 3: WHATS STOPPING IT.?

Scenario: The overall growth in demand for electricity in Maldives is expected to range between 5.6
percent and 6.1 percent annually. To meet this need restrictions have been relaxed to allow private and
foreign investment to flow into the energy sector. Siemens with its vast experience of pioneering power
and distribution solutions has taken up the contract at Seenu Atoll for transmission of data and voice using
Power Line Carriers (PLC) over HV transmission lines of Fenaka Corporation aided by line trap and
coupling capacitors. Being the chief engineer (operations )for Siemens stationed at Addu City, kindly
perform the following calculations…

P7: Explain the effect of primary line constants R, L, G, C on characteristic impedance of a transmission
line
Task 7(a) Explain the term “primary line constants” of a transmission line?
Task 7(b) A transmission line operating on 125MHz has an attenuation constant of 0.02, phase constant of
0.75 rad/m and Zo = 40Ω. Compute the values of R, L, G and C

P8: Define the concept of angular frequency as applied to transmission lines

Task 8 If the velocity of propagation in a lossless transmission line is 2.5 x 108 ms-1 and capacitance per
unit length is 30pF per metre, determine the characteristic impedance of the line, its inductance per unit
length and phase constant at 100MHz.?

P9: Calculate the characteristic impedance using primary line constants for a) Finite and infinite lengths
b) Parallel pair of wires c) coaxial cable

Task 9(a) What is meant by characteristic impedance of a transmission line?

Unit No:144 Unit Name: Telecommunication Principles, BTEC National Diploma in Engineering Page 2 of 3
Task 9(b) Determine the characteristic impedance of a parallel pair of wires separated by 10cm and whose
conductors have a diameter of 1mm. Assume value of dielectric constant as 1.

Task 9(c) A coaxial cable has a nominal capacitance of 69pF/m and characteristic impedance of 75Ω.
If the dielectric constant of insulation is 2.30, and its diameter of its inner conductor is 0.6mm, determine
inductance per unit length and diameter of its outer conductor?
