A. Will the Real Five Bagatelles Please Step Down?

a. Intro

i. Many pieces have different versions.

ii. Thesis: Even though the Five Bagatelles were written before Varii

Capricci they better show Walton’s intent with the composition.

b. Julian Bream

i. Guitarists often change the music originally written by composers.

ii. Julian’s relationship with Walton is not the best.

iii. Refernce the letter that Walton had about Bream.

c. Frederick Ashton

i. Frederick Ashton had a tradition history with the royal ballet.

ii. He used parody in this ballet.

iii. He references Walton in many ways.

iv. Talk about the letter between the two people.

d. First movement

i. It resembles Walton’s music the best.

ii. It has many interpolations from the original guitar score.

iii. The orchestra parts influence some of the performance practices of

the piece.

iv. There is newly added measures.

v. The orchestra piece works better on guitar than the guitar version.
e. Second movement

i. It is influenced by Eric Satie’s parody.

ii. It references 1960’s film music.

iii. Walton was a movie composer.

f. Third Movement

i. This movement reminisces on Walton’s home.

ii. Guitarists often overlook small details in this piece.

iii. There are various parts that could be changed in the guitar version

to be more effective by drawing ideas from Varii Caprcci.

iv. Certain parts of the Five Bagatelles notation do not represent the

original intent.

i. This movement is problematic on guitar.
