CE 3.2: PROJECT BACKGROUND

CE 3.2.1: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROJECT

In this project, I have developed load control and electivity usage monitoring and controlling system using
wireless GSM technology. I have utilized the significant characteristic of reading the meter and electricity
consumed in a house with the application of a microcontroller. I have used a microcontroller for storing the
information regarding the last usage and power consumption by the user. For monitoring and accessing the
information of the energy meter, through remote location, I have integrated the GSM module in this project.
This has allowed me receiving a SMS containing the information regarding the electricity usage to the cell
phone.

CE 3.2.2: OBJECTIVES DEVELOPED FOR PROJECT

The use of GSM technology, SMS has allowed me in remotely controlling the developed system while
eliminating the location boundary. For the completion of the project, I have developed the required objectives
as follows:

1. To understanding the working principle for the energy meter;

2. To integrate the GSM module in the energy monitoring and control system;
3. To select the cost efficient and high functionality hardware element for the proposed system;
4. To develop the block diagram of the proposed model;
5. To develop the circuit design for connecting the microcontroller and the GSM module;
6. To simulate the circuit for obtaining the effective result;

CE 3.2.3: MY AREA OF WORK

In the project, I worked with the connectivity of the elements and developing the circuit design for the load
control system. I had to integrate the GSM module within the system. In addition to that, I also have to test the
developed system in Keil Compiler software before integrating the programming logic in to the
microcontroller. Nevertheless, I had to demonstrate the work and deliverables to the team members. During
my work, in this project, I have to program the functional logic in C programming into the microcontroller and
develop the required block diagram of the system connecting the hardware elements.

CE 3.2.5: MY RESPONSIBILITIES THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT

I have various responsibilities for the development of the electricity monitoring and load control system
development. Apart from being a team lead for this project, I have worked alongside the team members for
evaluating the functionalities of the system and completing the prototype within allocated time. In addition to
that, I took the responsibility of selecting the cost-efficient hardware element and testing the functionality of
the system.

CE 3.3: DISTINCTIVE ACTIVITY

CE 3.3.1: COMPREHENDING THE THEORY OF THE PROJECT

The energy meter that I have used in this project, records the amount of electricity consumed in the selected
area with respect to the load. The electricity and load control meter takes the advantage of the incremental
amount of change and flow of current through the circuit that causes the disc to rotate. During this project, I
have learnt that the current flowing amount through the circuit is directly proportional to the rotating disks’
speed. In this project, I have utilized the LED blinking to feed the microcontroller with the input for
calculating the electricity consumed.

CE 3.3.2: ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS APPLIED IN THE

PROJECT
In this project, I used my knowledge and skills to store the information regarding the energy consumption in
the external memory of the microcontroller. I took reference from various sources (journals, books and
websites) to obtain knowledge of energy consumption. I used my knowledge to connect the LCD element with
the microcontroller for displaying the message through the GSM module. I used my skills and knowledge
(GSM Module) to connect the GSM module within the system in such a way that the cell phone can
communicate with the GSM through wireless communication, and the GSM communicate with the
microcontroller through the integrated circuit. I also used MAX 232 IC for connecting the microcontroller with
the GSM module. Furthermore, I used knowledge of the standard voltage of RS323 for GSM and TTL logic
for communicating with the voltage level convertor. Through the application of MAX 232 for converting the
applied voltage level to the required level of TTL. In the prototype system, I have ensured that have
microcontroller respond back when any signal is sent to the system. For controlling the load, I have
configured the microcontroller with the programming logic. Through this I was able to display the load and
amount of energy consumption through the attached LCD unit.

CE 3.3.3: ACCOMPLISHMENT AND TASK PERFORMED

I have identified the working principle of the load control system. In this project I used energy meter to keep
track of amount of energy consumed in the specified area with respect to load. I connected disc in such a way
that it will rotate when the current passes through the circuit. Afterwards, I used LED blinking to feed the
microcontroller with input in order to calculate the consumed electricity. Then, employ the GSM technology

for controlling the microcontroller. I have further developed the connectivity between the different elements
and successfully constructed the prototype model. In this way I have accomplished my delegated work.

CE 3.3.4: IDENTIFIED ISSUES AND THEIR SOLUTIONS

Technical Issue: During the development of the power supply in the microcontroller unit applied in the
system, I have faced vital issues. Due the high power voltage and supply, the microcontroller used got burnt in
the initial prototype model. In the prototype system, I have used regulator, filter, rectifier and transformer. The
proper system required DC voltage for working. After investigating the problem, I have found that the
converter used failed to convert the AC to DC.

Solutions: In term of mitigating the solution, I have communicated with the project manager who was guiding
me for this project. With his guidance, I have decided the power supply of 12V that I have connected for
rectification to diodes. I have observed that converted DC waves contained small amount of harmonics with it.
For this purpose, I have used filter for rectification of the harmonics. This has allowed me in employing the
capacity of electrolytes. For ensuring the effective DC output voltage, I have applied 78XX voltage regulators.

CE 3.3.5: PLAN FOR PRODUCING CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE WORK

In terms of creating innovation and creativity within the project, I have applied two significant software
applications namely Flash Magic and Keil Compiler. I have utilized the Keil Compiler software as an
integrated environment for the development of the required software and testing the system on the embedded
system. Through the application of the Keil Compiler, I was able to code the functionality of the proposed
system with C programming language. In addition to that, I have simulated the software in the compiler before
testing them with the microcontroller. This has allowed me in protecting the microcontroller from errors. For
the integration of the C programming language within the microcontroller I have used Integrated Development
Environment, μVision3. Through this I was able to debug the program and effectively configure the system.
During the development and implementation of the system, I have observed that the memory of the
microcontroller used in the system can be reprogrammed with the utilization of the “In-System Programming
Technology”. After facing significant errors and issues in the initial programming logic, I have erased the
programming from the microcontroller for modification of the logic.

CE 3.3.6: COLLABORATIVE WORK

I have supervised the team members in this project for completing the prototype model. I have further
communicated daily with the team members for understanding the work progress and issues faced during the
prototype development. Apart from that, I have communicated with the project manager once a week for
providing him with the progress of the project. In addition, I helped my teammate when they faced coding

problem when doing programming in the microcontroller. Also, I used to share my progress with my
teammates. After individual team member delegated work was completed then my teammate and I assembled
and run our project for test. I was able to successfully complete the prototype model with the application of
collaborative approach.

CE 3.4: PROJECT REVIEW

CE 3.4.1: PROJECT OVERVIEW

In this project, I have successfully and efficiently applied the GSM technology and module for the energy
meter. The prototype model was able to read the energy consumed and cover the entire university campus for
energy consumption reading. Therefore, through this project I was able to deliver, low cost, low maintenance,
and highly efficient SMS based load reading system.

CE 3.4.2: MY CONTRIBUTION TO WORK

In this project, I have efficiently able to identify the required deliverables for the development of the Power
detection and load calculation system. In addition to that, I have successfully allocated the work load among
the team members for the completing the task within deadline. Apart from that, I was able to identify the
underlying issues and provide relevant solution and reducing its impact on the project.
