Mouna
=
Silence
• The
practice
of
cultivating
inner
silence
–
it’s
essence
being
awareness
–
so
not
denying
anything,
accepting
all
as
it
is!!
• Mind
always
externalised
–we
see
and
hear
what
is
outside
–
we
have
an
addiction
to
external
stimuli!
• AM
=
a
practice
to
work
with
and
understand
the
workings
of
the
mind
–
to
develop
self
awareness
–
THE
REAL
SELF
–
THE
SILENT
SELF
–
AWAY
FROM
MONKEY
MIND
• It
can
be
practiced
24
hours
a
day
in
every
situation
• To
develop
awareness
of
all
that
is
not
what
we
feel
it
should
be
• Remind
our
self
here
it
is
not
a
concentration
practice
–
but
will
develop
intense
focus
• We
all
have
suppressed
thoughts
building
up
from
an
early
age
–
in
a
way
we
are
condition
to
suppress.....
• The
practice
of
seeing
the
mind
and
it’s
workings,
observing
perceptions
and
eaccepting
experiences
–
easy
example
–
observe
plane
overhead
or
loud
noise
–
observe
and
accept
the
reaction
of
the
mind
to
this
external
sound............
• Slowly
we
become
aware
of
thoughts,
visions,
sounds
and
feelings
within
and
without
not
trying
to
push
them
away
–
accepting
the
fact
we
are
aware
• 1st
step
to
pratyahara
–
but
will
happen
spontaneously
–
without
force
or
causing
more
tension
in
the
mind
• Become
a
silent
and
impartial
witness
to
all
functions
of
the
mind
• Adopt
the
attitude
of
sakshi
bhava
(to
stand
as
a
witness)
• Be
the
seer
not
the
thinker
• Peel
the
labels
away
of
good
and
bad
• Do
not
judge
experience
–
try
to
accept
as
is
• Be
intensely
alert
• Do
not
become
involved
in
the
sensation
or
thought
–
remain
the
observer
–
then
suppressed
thoughts
arise
with
ease
The
literal
meaning
of
samskara
is
'uniform
personality',
'akara'
meaning
'form',
'shape'
or
'personality',
and
'sam'
meaning
'the
totality
of'.
• Imprints
left
on
subconscious
mind
by
experience
–
these
colour
life,
responses,
character
and
state
of
mind
• Antar
Mouna
allows
these
hidden
impressions
to
surface
safely
and
clear
them
from
the
subconscious
• Already
said
not
a
concentration
practice
–
when
we
concentrate
we
hold
on
to
an
image
etc
–
AM
is
the
practice
of
developing
acceptance
and
awareness
• If
we
concentrate
on
a
thought
(especially
suppressed
challenging
one!)
–
we
are
liable
to
say
‘NO’
put
it
top
one
side
–
and
deal
with
it
later!
• We
control
(not
observe
and
allow
to
flow)
-‐
We
suppress
or
put
away
-‐
This
builds
internally
–
leads
to
worry,
disease
and
a
host
of
physiological
and
psychological
problems
• Samskaras
are
powerful
barriers
to
personal
and
spiritual
development
• Little
by
little
we
allow
them
to
surface
–
then
let
them
go
• Process
called
ATMA
or
CHITTA
SHUDDI
(self
or
mind
purification)
PURPOSE
is
to
induce
PRATYAHARA
as
a
means
to
meditation
