ABSTRACT

The aims of this research were to find out the real tasks of travel agent based on the
results of the needs analysis, as well as to design English materials for travel agent which are
appropriate with their needs. This research is categorized into research and development
(R&D). The participants of this research due to gain information related to the needs analysis
were the travel agent workers in Merapi Tour and Travel. In order to answer the research
questions, instructional design model by Rogers (2002) called ADDIE was applied. The
stages of the model are analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.
However, due to limited time, this research was narrowed into three first stages, which are
analysis, design and development. In the analysis stage, the researcher conducted interview to
five experienced travel agent workers and to an English teacher who also has been teaching
travel agent students in vocational high schools so that the information gained could be
appropriate with the real needs or tasks. Furthermore, the syllabus was created based on the
results of needs analysis. After the syllabus was accomplished, the research further developed
the materials or elaborated the syllabus into the first draft of the materials. Then, the first
draft of the materials was further evaluated by experts. By having expert validation, the
researcher gained some evaluations, revisions and suggestions which were useful for the
materials’ improvement. Based on the notes gained during the expert validation, the materials
were improved into final draft of the materials. The results of the research were the syllabus
and the English materials for travel agents. The syllabus was created by considering the needs
analysis results, four strands and the theory of English for Specific Purposes. Besides, the
English materials were also designed through several revisions based on the results of experts
in order to make the materials more appropriate for the travel agent workers.
