Honors Physics

Mrs. Scofield
East Rutherford High School
Fall 2018

Honors Physics is the study of the nature, properties, and interaction of matter and
energy. In Honors Physics, students are expected to work independently on a variety
of assignments and accept greater responsibility for their learning. Honors Physics is a
math based science course that you will find to be a challenging academic
experience.

Course Objectives are determined by the North Carolina Department of Public

Instruction.

A student enrolled in Honors Physics will:

1. Analyze the motion of objects both graphically and numerically;
2. Analyze systems of forces and their interaction with matter;
3. Understand the concepts of work, energy, and power;
4. Analyze the behavior of waves;
5. Analyze charge, electrostatics, circuits, and magnetism;

State mandated test--An N.C. Final exam developed by NCDPI will be given at
the end of the semester. This test will count as 20% of your semester grade for the
class.

Supplies: !3 ring binder (1 ½ inch)

! Loose leaf notebook paper
! tab dividers
! Blue or black ink pens only, and pencil
! Scientific or graphing calculator
(access one on Mac: Finder ➜applications➜ calculator)

!Class Notebook —Organization is important! Suggested sections: class notes,

homework problems, labs, and tests. Your notebook is an important resource to
prepare for the comprehensive test at the end of the semester

!Daily Notes—Notes will be taken on a daily basis. It is the student’s responsibility to

get any notes missed due to absence.

!Daily Homework-- Homework will be used used to practice and master the
concepts you will be tested on. Consistently completing assigned homework is
VITAL to your success in this class. Grades on homework assignments will be taken
at the teacher’s discretion.

!Labs-- LAB SAFETY RULES WILL BE FOLLOWED AT ALL TIMES. Failure to adhere to
lab safety procedures or horseplay in the lab will result in a zero for that activity
and possible loss of lab privileges. Labs missed due to absence will be made up
at the teacher's discretion.

!Test and Quiz Grades--Grades will be based on mastery of the Learning Goals
addressed by the assessment. Students may be able to revise their Learning Goal
grades within the six weeks the unit was taught. Time and method required for re-
evaluation will be determined by the instructor.

!Projects—Individual or team projects and writing assignments will be assigned

throughout the semester.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY/CHEATING OF ANY TYPE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

1. Cheating will result in a 0/F grade for work as well as possible parent meetings,
and administrative referral.
2. Work receiving a 0 for cheating may NOT be redone.
3. CHEATING includes but is not limited to:
copying another students homework
using a cheat sheet or copying answers on tests
Use of cell phone or other electronic communication during test FOR
ANY REASON
plagiarism or using cut and paste on written assignments or projects
(even extra credit assignments)
Grading
Six weeks grades will be based on mastery of Learning Goals representing what a
Physics student should know, understand and be able to do based on the New
Essential Standards for science.

• Each unit will include a number of learning goals, mastery of which is vital to
achieve a good grade in the class.

• Your mastery of each goal will be determined by a test at the conclusion of the
unit.

• Homework assignments and classwork are CRITICAL--You MUST complete your

work to master the material taught. HOWEVER, homework assignments and
classwork are not typically graded.

• Class assignments, projects, and quizzes will factor into your grade as
determined by the teacher.

East High Grading Scale will be followed: A = 90-100

B = 80-90
C = 70-80
D = 60-77
F = 0-59

Class Rules

1) BE IN YOUR SEAT when the bell rings,

2) BRING ALL MATERIALS to class including textbook, notebook, pencil and/or

pen, and any class assignments.
3) Computers stay IN YOUR BOOK BAG unless you are instructed to get them
out.
4) NO EATING OR DRINKING IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.

5) Be RESPECTFUL to instructor and to classmates.

6) DO NOT TOUCH lab equipment or materials until instructed to do so.

In Case of Absence
!Class activities and assignments will be recorded on my website daily. If you are
absent from class YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for checking these resources, getting ALL
make-up work and notes, and turning in your assignments.

! Work missed due to an absence must be completed as soon as possible to avoid

falling behind. I am available daily after school and Tuesday and Thursday from
7:30-8:00 am for tutoring and makeup work.

About Technology
!Students are expected to use technology responsibly.  Using your computer
in class is a privilege, not a right!

!Many assignments in this class will be submitted electronically, so you should pay
close attention to properly naming and organizing your files in folders on your
computer.

!Students must remember their usernames and passwords for all accounts. Not
being able to access your account will not be an excuse for not completing an
assignment.

!No extension of deadlines will occur due to technology issues such as computer
crashes.  Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your assignments, and always
save and back up your work.
