Loyola Educational Technology Internship Proposal

Jamie Schaller
White Oak School
2017-2018

Internship Goal:
Provide teachers, instructional assistants, and other staff members at White Oak
School with opportunities to utilize technology in the classroom, and collaborate
with other teachers and students in a meaningful way.

Internship Objectives:
 To collaborate with staff and better understand problems that they have
with technology, in order to provide them with training to better solve
those problems
 To expose staff to a variety of technology resources and web 2.0 tools
that will enhance learning and teaching
 To provide students with multiple resources in order to create globally
competent learners and responsible digital citizens

Internship Overview:

Technology is a key part of every educator’s daily instruction. Teachers in

Baltimore County have been given a platform (BCPS One) to provide them with

curriculum, resources, and technology tools. Unfortunately, not all teachers feel

confident in utilizing these tools, and students often suffer. There is not enough

time in the day for teachers to explore new tools and have students learn them

as well.

During my internship, I would like to increase the knowledge, use of

technology, and level of comfort by staff members. With students in grades K-5

having access to 1:1 devices, teachers need to feel comfortable using the tools,

in order for students to feel comfortable. I would like to provide teachers,

instructional assistants, and any other willing staff members with a time to
collaborate and explore technology tools that will help solve current problems in

the classroom with technology.

Initially I have brainstormed some topics that might be of interest to

teachers and staff, but I would like to provide teachers with the opportunity to

share what they would like to learn about. I will start by sending a survey to see

what current problems teachers have in the classroom with technology.

Examples may include, but are not limited to: not understanding specific

programs or tools, looking for alternative assessment tools rather than traditional

paper and pencil methods, ways to utilize technology when leaving sub plans,

and ways that technology can make their lives easier rather than harder.

Realizing that there will be ranging levels of comfort and wants/needs, I will

provide a session per month that all faculty is invited to attend. In order to make

the time meaningful, I will provide staff with screencast overviews of the tools, so

that they can review back to them later, and utilize the workshops/professional

development appropriately. I will also gauge initial comfort levels with tools so

that I can possibly provide different levels of exposure. This method is modeled

after the flipped classrooms that have proven effective.

Once the topics have been determined for the first session, I will send out

calendar invites to teachers and staff who would like to attend. Each month I

will provide teachers with access to a website in which they can read newsletter

items, see past screencasts, view showcased tools, and have a question and

answer forum.
This internship closely relates to a number of Ely’s Eight Conditions of

Change. In order for teachers and instructional assistants to change the level of

technology in the classroom they must first be provided with sufficient

knowledge and skills. They must also have the time to do it, which will be

addressed with screencasts that they can watch at their leisure, and after

school sessions that they can attend. In coordinating with the school secretary

possible rewards or incentives have also been discussed, including possible

collaboration time pay. I would like to provide strong leadership, so that

teachers can feel like leaders of technology in their own classroom, while also

feeling comfortable in coming to me and asking for assistance or asking

questions.

At the conclusion of the internship, I hope to have provided staff with new

knowledge and tools that can aid their everyday life as a teacher. I will

constantly be re-assessing through surveys and work samples in order to see

what works and what doesn’t, so that I can modify as needed. These notes will

be kept in an internship reflection log, and a link to the school accessed website

will be provided on my internship portfolio.
