IV. Numbers patterns

A number pattern is a set of numbers that follows a common ssequence throughout. Using the
sequence, we will be able to derive the next number in that pattern.
Determine which numbers come next in the pattern and explain the rule. This worksheet has
2-digit number lists.

Describe the rule used in each number pattern and list the three numbers that come next. The
lists feature 3-digit numbers.

Example:

1.Write the numbers that come next. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, _____, _____, _____ ...

Solution:

n+2, odd number ;....,11,13,15,17,......

Arrange the nuber from the smallest to the greatest, if the sequence number is in
increasing order (Ascending order)

2. Arrange the number in descending order. 988, 899,1359,1953, 3758....2299

Solution :

3378, 2299, 1953, 1359, 988, 899.

V. Approximation
There three main ways to round numbers :
 to the neares ,10,100,100,1000 and the others
 to certain number of significant figures
 to certain number of decimals place
If the digit is less than 5, we do round up to the number. However if the digit is 5 or
more than 5, we round up to the next whole number.

Note that a measured length such as’ 12 cm to the neares ‘ cm means that the
actual length lies between 11.5 cm and 12.5 cm

By convency the normally round 0.5 up to the next hole number,

so infact 11.5 cm ≤ actual length ≤ 12.5 cm
we call 11.5 cm lower bound and 12.5 cm the upper bound.
We can also write the upper bound as 12.499999 or 12.49 where the dot above the
9 means that it is repeated indifinetly, or recurs. It isimportant that 12.9 not the
upper bound ,as for example , the length could have been 12.498.

VI. Estimation
Estimation is useful for finding out a rough approximate of a sum or different of
number.
Example : to the estimate the sum of 256 and8063, follow the steps bellow.
Solution :
Step 1: Round of 256 and 8063 to the nearest hundred.
256 ≈ 300
8063 ≈ 8100
Step 2: Find the sum of estimated numbers.
300 + 8100 = 8400.
Hus, the estimate of the su of 256 and 8063 is 8400.
Note: the actual sum of 256 and 8063 is 8319 whish is quite close to 8400.

II. The Four Operation

A.Muliply by 10,100 or 1000
For Example:
3 x 10 ( add 3 group of 10 ) or write one 0 in the end that number (30 )
3 x 100( add 3 group of 100 ) or write two 0 in the end that number ( 300)
3 x 1000(add 3 group of 1000 ) or write three 0 in the end that number(3000)

B.Multiply by tens, hundreds, or thousands

Similary, when multiply whole number by tens, hundreds or thousands
2 x 70 ( add 70 group of 2 )
or write one 0 in the end of product 2 and 7, that number is (210 )
2 x 700( add 700 group of 2 )
or write one 0 in the end of product 2 and 7, that number is (2100 )
2 x 7000(add 7000 group of 2 )
or write one 0 in the end of product 2 and 7, that number is (21000 )
C. Devide by 10,100,1000
For example :
5000 : 10 = 500 ( 10 group of 5000 ) or
erase one 0 in the end that number(5000)
5000:100 = 50( 100 group of 5000 ) or
erase two 0 in the end that number(5000)
5000: 1000 = 5 ( 1000 group of 5000 ) or
erase three 0 in the end that number(5000)
D. Devide by tens, hudreds or thousands
Similary, when deviding a whole number by tens , hundreds or thousands, we are
actually putting the whole number.
For example :
3000: 50 = 60
3000: 500 = 6

E. Four Operation on whole number using a calculator

It is important to follow the instruction in manual that come with the calaulator.

III. Order of Operation

A. Addition and Subtrtaction
There are rules to follow in an expression involving addition and subtraction,
we perform the opration from the left to rigth
Example:
When evaluating 65 – 24 + 17,
First step 65 – 24 = 41 then 41 + 17 = 58,
the evaluation result of 65 – 24 + 17 is 58

B. Multiplycation and Division

In an expression involving multiplication and division , we also perform the
operation from the left to rigth.
Example:
For the evaluating 55 : 11 x 4
First step 55: 11 = 5 then 5 x 4 = 20,
the evaluation result of 55 : 11 x 4 is 20
C. Additon and Multiplication
In an expession involving addition and multiplication, we perform the
multiplication first then the addition.
Example:
For the evaluating 54 + 6 x 7
First step 6 x 7= 42 then 42 + 54 =96,
the evaluation result of 54 + 6 x 7 is 96

D. Addition and division

In an exprression involving addition and division, we perform the division first
then the addition.
Example:
For the evaluating 54 + 6 : 3
First step 6 : 3= 2 then 2 + 54 =56,
the evaluation result of 54 + 6 : 3 is 56

E. Subtraction and Multiplication

In an exprression involving subtraction and multiplication, we perform the
multiplication first then the subtraction.
Example:
For the evaluating 59 – 12 x 3,
First step 12 x 3 = 36 then 59 - 36 = 23,
the evaluation result of 59 – 12 x 3 is 23
F. Subtraction and Division
In an exprression involving subtraction and division,
we perform the division first then the subtraction.
Example:
For the evaluating 59 – 12 x 3,
First step 12 x 3 = 36 then 59 - 36 = 23,
the evaluation result of 59 – 12 x 3 is 23
G. The four operation
In an exprression involving 4 operation without bracket, we perform
multiplition and division before addition and subtraction.
Example:
H. 15 - 8 : 4 + 3 x 7 or fisrt solving 8 : 4 = 2, then 3 x 7 = 21 , then
= 15 – 2 + 21
= 13 + 21
= 34
I. There for operation involving brackets
In an exprression involving 4 operation with bracket, we follow the order of
operation as fallows:
Step 1: Perform the operation in the brackets
Step 2: Perform the multiplication and division before addition and
subtraction
Step 3: Perform the operation from th left to the right.
Example: when evaluating 94 – 8 x ( 2 +5 )
Step 1: ( 2 + 5 ) = 7
Step 2: 8 x 7 = 56
Step 3: 94 – 56 = 38
Thus,the result of evaluating 94 – 8 x ( 2 +5 ) is 38

J. Word Problem

RATIO
A. Simple Ratio
A ratio does not indicate the actual size of the quantities involdved.
Example:
Jonnah has some toys .6 toys are red and 4 toy are green.
Thus, the ratio of the number of red toys to the number of green toys is 6:4

B. Equivalent ratio
Equivalent ratios are ratios that can be changed in proportion
Jonnah has some toys .12 toys are red and 8 toys are green.
Thus, the ratio of the number of red toys to the number of green toys is 12:8, and the same
proportion ratio 6:4 and the ratio of green toys to the red toys is 4:6.

C. Ratio in simples form

Jonnah has some toys .12 toys are red and 8 toy are green.
Thus, the ratio of the number of red toys to the number of green toys is 12:8, and can make the
simple ratio 3:2 and the ratio of green toys to the red toys is 2:3.

D. Ratio shows the sizes of two or three quantities

Example:
Ratio of boys and and girls in the clas is 2:3
Ratio of fruits in a backet is 4 aples:6 manggoes: 3 papayas
Ratio can write in a simple fraction, example :
a.12:18 make a simple factor 2:3 is the same as 2/3 ( 12:18 =2:3 = 2/3)
b.10:20:25 is the same as 2:4:5

E. Find unknown quantity from a given ratio

The sum of the 2quantities can be found if the quantitiy of one part is given
Example:
Ratio of boys and and girls in the clas is 2:3 when the sum of boys is 14.
We can found the sum girls and all the students in the class with the solution:
Girls is
3/2 x 14 =21 so the sum of girls is 21
All students is the sum of boys and girls :
14 + 21= 35 students
or (2+3)/2 x 14 = 35

F. Solve word problem on ratio and proportion

Example:
3 grade of tea costing Rp. 7; Rp.5 and Rp.8 per kg repectively are mix in the ratio 2:4:3. Find
the cost of 18 kg of the mixture.
Solution:
2 + 4 + 3 = 9 units
9 units is 18 kg
1 unit is 18 :9 =2 kg
The ratio become (2:4:3)x2 = 4 : 8 : 6, then
= (4 x Rp.7)+ ( 8x Rp. 5)+ ( 6 x Rp. 8)
= Rp. 28 + Rp. 40 + Rp. 48
= Rp. 116
so cost 18 kg is Rp. 116

Percentage
A.Percentage is the meaning divide by 100 ,
then 15 percentis the same as 15% = 15/100
or we can write in decimal 0.15 so
15% = 15/100 = 0.15
Fraction Decimal Percentage
1/5 0.2 20%
3/4 0.75 75%
5/4 1.25 125%

B. Expessing one quantity in percentage

When expressing one quantity as percentage of another the second quantity is the
denominator from a fraction. Example:
There are 6 manggoes and 18 pears.
Express the number of manggoes as a percentage of the pears

Solution:

Express the number of pears as a percentage of all fruits

Solution
18 / (6 + 18) = 18/ 24 = ¾ = 75/100 = 75%

C. Percentage increase
Step 1, find the different between the 2 quantities tha t are given.
The answer that is the obtioned is the actual increase in quantities.
