reduced level of the first point was 192.000 m. Rule out a page of a level field book
and enter the above readings. Calculate the reduced levels of the points.

11. A survey line PQ intersects a pond. To continue this line past this obstacle, two
stations M and N were taken on either of the pond. A line MS, 90 m long was laid
down on the left of MN and a second line MR, 130 m long was laid down on the right
of MN, the points S, N and R being on the same straight line. SN and NR were then
measured and found to be 75 m and 78 m respectively. Determine the length of MN.
12. The following bearings were observed with a compass. Calculate the interior angle.
Apply usual check.
Line Fore Bearing
AB 60°30’
BC 122°00’
CD 46°00’
DE 205°30’
EA 300°00’

13. The following bearings were taken in running a compass traverse ABCDEF:
Line Fore Bearing
AB 290°45
BC 250°48
CD 196°12
DE 175°24
EF 112°18
FA 30°00

Determine the internal angles and apply check.

14. A river is flowing from West to East. For determining the width of the river two
points A and B are selected on the southern bank such that the distance AB =75
m. Point A is westward. The bearing of a tree C on the northern bank are observed
to be 38° and 338° respectively from A and B. Calculate the width of a river.

15. A metric chain of 30 m length too short by one link was used to measure the
lengths of the sides of triangular plot. The lengths measured were 413 links, 467
links and 536 links. Find the true area of the plot.

16. A 30 m chain was found to be 4 cm too long after chaining a distance of 1550 m.
The same chain at the end of the day’s work after chaining a distance of 2200 m
was found to be 6 cm too long. What is the length totally chained if the chain was
exactly 30 m when the work was commenced?
17. A rectangular plot was measured with a 20 m chain which was 5 cm too short.
The measured length of the diagonal was 1085 m. The sides of the plot bear a
ratio of 3:2. Find the true area of the plot.

18. A steel tape of nominal length 30 m was used to measure a line AB by suspending
it between supports. If the measured length was 29.861 m when the slope angle
was 3° 45′ and the mean temperature and tension applied were respectively 10° C
and 100 N, determine the corrected horizontal length. The standard length of the
tape was 30.004 m at 20 ° C and 44.5 N tension. The tape weighed 0.16 N/m and
had a cross – sectional area of 2 mm2. E = 2 x 105 N/mm2. α = 1.12 x
10-5 per °C.

19. In passing an obstacle in the form of a pond, stations A and D on the main line,
were taken on the opposite sides of the pond. On the left of AD a line AB, 200 m
long was laid down and a second line AC, 250 m long was ranged on the right of
AD. The points B, C, and C being in the straight line. BD and DC were then
chained and found to be 125 m and 150 m respectively. Find the length of AD?

20. A survey line AB is obstructed by a high building. To prolong the line beyond the
building, a perpendicular BC 121.92 m long is set at B. From C two lines CD and CE
are set out at angles of 55° and 65° with CB respectively. Determine the lengths CD
and CE so that D and E may be on the prolongation of AB. If the chainage of B is
9500.10 m, find the chainage of D.
