English is one of important foreign languages we must learn. It is one of the six official
language of UN. Many people communicate with each other from other part of the world by using
English. For that reason, English should be taught at schools.

In Indonesia, English is being taught since the elementary level. As an Indonesian student
who was graduated from Indonesian school, I would like to share my “adventure” of learning
English.

I was introduced with English when I was at the kindergarten by introducing several words.
I was not able to differentiate European languages. I remember when my grandfather taught me a
European word verboden, which means ‘dilarang’ in Indonesian. I taught that it is an English word.
So, I was thinking that ‘forbidden’ is pronounced as verboden.

When I was at the primary school, I studied English at school. I pronounced every English
word or sentence in my Batavian accent, since I am from a Javanese-Batavian family and live in a
Batavian-speaking community. So, I think, it would be funny if I still pronounce my English with
that accent.

Then, I continued my study to the lower secondary school. There, I started to see a ‘wider’
world. I was participating on a study tour with my school friends and teachers to Kampung Inggris,
Pare, Kediri. I learned something new about English, especially the American accent. Actually, I
prefer the British accent than the American, although until now I still could not speak in British
accent. And I was taught also by some English native speakers at my school.

After that, I continued my study to the upper secondary level. There, I got many
knowledges about the British English. My school chose the British English, since the system used
to teach English follows the Cambridge’s curriculum. I was taught by several English native
speakers.
 However, I still feel that my English is not good. My teacher told me that my accent sounds
like a Frenchman speaking English. I feel that my English grammar is bad. I often make mistake
on English grammar. For that reason, I often pretend that I could not speak English at all.

I would like to ameliorate my English, both the pronunciation, grammar, and vocabularies.
And I would like to learn how to write academic writing because I like to write something about
the analyses of my native language in English in order to introduce my native language to the
world.
