ASSIGNMENT 5

Q.1) A tank of liquid SG=0.88 is accelerated uniformly in a horizontal direction so that the
pressure decreases at Point B by 3.45 kPa. Determine the acceleration.

SG=0.88 SG=0.88

Q.2) A rectangular water tank open to the atmosphere is accelerated as shown below.

a) Sketch the water surface and pressure distributions on the side walls and the bottom of
the tank after the acceleration.
b) Determine the forces acting on the side walls and the bottom of the tank. The width of
the tank into the paper is 3m.

Answers Fleftwall=40.52 kN
2m/s2 2m/s2 Frightwall=115.52 kN
Q.3) A rectangular water tank open to the atmosphere is accelerated to the right on a level
surface at a specified rate. Determine the forces acting on the side walls and the bottom of the
tank. The width of the tank into the paper is 3m.

Answers Fleftwall=133.28kN
Frightwall=58.27 kN

Q.4) A water tank is being transported on a level road with a constant acceleration as shown in
Figure below? The height of the tank is 2m.
a) What is the allowable water height (maximum water height before the acceleration) to
avoid spill of water during acceleration?
b) What is the force acting on the right wall? Take the width of the water tank as 5m into
the paper.

a az=3 m/s2

2m ax=6 m/s2
h=?

Answers hmax=1.063m ;

4m Frightwall=128.1 kN
Q.5) A rectangular water tank open to the atmosphere is carried by a helicopter as shown in
Figure below. The acceleration of the helicopter and the water tank is 5 m/s2 in the direction
shown in the Figure. The figure shows the water tank before the acceleration. The width of the
tank into the paper is 4m. Determine the force acting on the side walls and bottom of the tank
and draw the water surface after the acceleration.

Assume: No friction
Answers Fleftwall=97.93 kN
Frightwall=139.63 kN
