Baking Up Engagement!!!
(Grade 7th)

Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Class is not actively engaged during the math lesson which is causing a decrease in
comprehension of the context. Students are doodling in their math journals, focusing their attention on their electronic devices,
talking to each other, working on assignments that are not related to what is being taught, and ignoring directives to get their
attention.
Expected Behavior: Get Engaged in Math
- Proper materials on desk (book, pencil, math journal)
- Prepared with required assignments
- Electronics are put away (phones, tablets, laptops)
- Eyes on the teacher
- Talking is only to the teacher unless directed otherwise
- Raising hands to answer questions
- Participating in class discussions
Positive Reinforcements
1. Immediate R+: Each time a student is actively engaged in the math lesson displaying the expectations of the
teacher, they will receive a tally mark on the board that will at the end of class result in sprinkles being added to
the layer of cake closes to the bottom of the cake that is not yet filled.
2. Ongoing R+ Displayed: Every time the class fills a half of a layer (125 Sprinkles) of the cake they will receive
one of the smaller, simpler ingredients of the cake. The first half of the bottom layer will be Baking Powder, the
first half of the second layer will be Sugar, the first half of the third layer will be Vanilla Extract, and the first half
of the final layer will be Salt. Every time they fill a full layer (250 Sprinkles) they will receive a bigger ingredient.
The first full layer will be Flour, the second full layer will be Butter, the third full layer will be Eggs, and the final
layer will be Milk.
3. Overall R+: Once the class has filled up the cake with sprinkles on all layers (1000 Sprinkles), the next day, the
teacher will bring the ingredients that the students earned and allow for them to mix cakes for baking.
4. Easy Administration of R+: Every time a student gets engaged in the math lesson, the teacher will mark a tally
on the board in the designated area and at the end of class the teacher will count how many tally marks were made
and place that many sprinkles on the cake.
Interactive Learning Activity
 Mix a Cake for Baking
o (12) Reading/Comprehension of Informational Text/Procedural Texts
 12.A: Follow multi-tasked instructions to complete a task, solve a problem, or perform procedures;
o (3) Number and operations
 3.B: Apply and extend previous understandings of operations to solve problems using addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers.
o (4) Science investigation and reasoning
 4.B: Use preventative safety equipment, including chemical splash goggles, aprons, and gloves, and
be prepared to use emergency safety equipment, including an eye/face wash, a fire blanket, and a fire
extinguisher
 Cake mixing will involve students measuring and having to read instructions to determine proper measurement
amounts and ingredients needed to mix a cake according to the instructions provided.
Teaching the Expected Behavior:
I will teach the students how to have proper materials on desk (book, pencil, math journal), be prepared with required
assignments, electronics are put away (phones, tablets, laptops), eyes on the teacher, talking is only to the teacher unless
directed otherwise, raising hands to answer questions, and participating in class discussions. The teacher will model what this
looks like to further increase understanding.
Teaching the Plan:
During the first week of implementation I will break down any procedures for being actively engaged in class by practicing
with the students. I will explain to the students that every time a student is caught being actively engaged they will receive a
sprinkle.
Some Options Might Be: I may have to implement another process for determining the standard of earning a sprinkle if the
students are beginning to fill the sprinkles on one if the bottom two layers too quickly.
Demonstrate all Necessary Items: Sprinkles, Cake Ingredients, Cake Recipe, Measurement Utensils, Mixing Utensils,
Baking Pans.
