Plan Title: Grow to Succeed Cindy DeLong #5

Undesirable Behavior Targeted: During quiet reading time, students are talking to their peers and getting up out of their
seats. This interferes with learning because it distracts those trying to read quietly. Also, the students who are not seated
are not getting the sustained reading time they need.
Expected Behavior: Plant yourself in your seat and Read
• Have your book(s) at your desk and be ready to read.
• No talking during reading time. Voices are at a zero.
• Stay in your seat.
• If you need to ask a question or get up, raise your hand and wait for teacher to speak with you.
Types of positive reinforcements - Reinforced – when & how?
1. Immediate R+ During quiet reading time, the teacher will observe students and keep track of students who will receive sunflower
seeds by writing praise notes to the students. Directly after reading time, the teacher will place a sunflower seed in the bucket of
students demonstrating appropriate behavior and pass out praise notes. The teacher will also use BCPS to reinforce positive
behaviors.
2. Ongoing R+ Displayed. At the end of the day each table will count their sunflower seeds. Seed totals will be added
together by counting by 5’s and 10’s. For every 25 seeds, a flower sticker will be placed on a specific part of a plant.
Once the students receive 5 flower stickers on a part of the plant, the part will be removed and the activity will be revealed.
3. Overall R+ Students will earn small activities while they work to earn their big interactive learning activity of planting and
maintaining a class garden on school grounds.
4. Easy administration of R+ In order to not disrupt quiet reading time, the teacher will distribute the sunflower
seeds at the end of reading time. Praise notes will also be given during this time and BSPS will be used in a follow up
discussion with the class on how well they did at the reading quietly and staying in their seats.
Interactive Learning Activity - Once the class has reached each goal (5 flower stickers on a part of a plant which is
equal to 100 sunflower seeds) a part of the plant will be removed to reveal our fun learning activity. The activities are as follows.
Roots- Parts of the plants flower song and video. Students will learn parts of the plants song flowers, stems, leaves and
roots, and seeds (sung to head, shoulders knees and toes.) Stem: The teacher will read the book The Legend of the Bluebonnet. Students
will learn this is the Texas State flower and will paint a bluebonnet and list what it needs to grow.
Leaves- I can plant grass and measure it while it grows. Students will plant grass in clear cups, decorate faces on the cups, and plant grass
from seed. Students will water their cups and measure the grass as it grows.
Seeds- Students will make bean greenhouses with lima beans, wet paper towels, Ziploc bags and construction paper. These will be
hung on the windows and students will observe their growth and record data.
Flower: The BIG activity. Students will plant a class garden on the school grounds. Students will vote on which herb and flowers we plant,
and we will maintain garden and work together to keep it growing.
First grade TEKS:
• Science: (10) Organisms and environments. The student is expected to: (B) identify and compare the parts of plants.
• Math (5) Algebraic reasoning. The student is expected to:
(A) recite numbers forward and backward from any given number between 1 and 120;

(B) skip count by twos, fives, and tens to determine the total number of objects up to 120 in a set and environments.
(7)Geometry and measurement. (A) use measuring tools to measure the length of objects

Teaching the Desired Behaviors: I will teach the behaviors by demonstrating what it looks like
to have a book ready, sit quietly and read, stay in my seat, and raise my hand if I need to talk or get up. We will then
play Simon Says to go over these behaviors. Each day before quiet reading time, I will remind the students this is silent
reading time, tell them make sure they have the books they need at their desks, and remind them to raise their hand if
they need to talk or get up. We will play Simon Says to start silent reading time. “Simon says get out your book, Simon
says sit in your seat, Simon says read.”

Teaching the Plan:

I will introduce the bulletin board at the beginning of my lesson to demonstrate the way the plan will work. I will
review the behavior expectations for them to “plant themselves in their seat and read quietly.” I will tell students they will receive 1
sunflower seed after reading time if they planted themselves in their seat and read quietly. At the end of the day, students will count
their sunflower seeds and the total will be recorded on the white board. For every 20 seeds, a flower sticker will be placed
on a part of a plant. Once the part of the plant has 5 flower stickers (100 seeds) the part will be removed and an activity
will be revealed. Since there are 5 parts of the plant, there will be 5 total fun learning activities, with the last, the flower being a
huge surprise for the class, planting our own class garden on school grounds.
Provide options:
This plan could be extended to have students write about their experience growing their grass and the process the took to get it
to grow. They could also write fun stories about their “plant person.” Further educational activities related to this plan could be
reviewing the parts of the plant, living and non- living organisms, and habitats and how they grow.
