Learning to Raise My Hand

Reflect/React: The reading was emotional about what Kelly has been through in the eight years she talked about

between school, teachers, and personal relationships. My first reflect is about Mr. Peeps and his work ethic

towards his students, especially women. I disliked how there may be some teachers in the world who are like Mr.

Peep. Teachers are supposed to be supportive towards their students, and to read Mr. Peep calling Kelly a “typical

blonde bimbo” made my jaw dropped. In addition, the support for Kelly was not there, because the principle was

afraid of their school reputation. Kelly was not supported by her teachers and her principle. That’s what schools

should be, a support system for young individuals. This was emotionally difficult to hear because students should

go to school and be known that it’s a safe environment for learning, and people working at schools are supposed

to be someone to look up to, not have someone talk down to you. My second reflect is about Kelly and her

insecurities. I too see myself insecure at times, I do not have a learning disability, but my past experiences have

grown on me into not being as confidence as I once want to be. It’s like all these thoughts rush through my own

head when a situation comes up. But confidence is a big asset to have. And I applaud Kelly in having goals. Goals

is a great thing to have, and hope she continues to fulfill those goals of teaching to educated young minds, I feel

she knows how to interact with student on a whole another level unlike Mr. Peep. The rest of Kelly’s story about

her relationship with Steven and horrible experience with Rick was heart breaking. I’m glad they caught Rick

and got kicked out of school, he deserves that.

Apply: As a teacher, I would not treat children and students as if I were better than them. They are in school to

learn, and as a teacher I would do my best in teaching new skills and learning techniques, and knowledge to assist

students in succeeding. In addition, I would continue to strive in keeping any negative emotions I have at home.

As a teacher I would not reflect negative vibes amongst our students, but to continue striving for a positive support

system for students who want to learn. Every student wants to learn. Teachers enjoy teaching.

Ask: Do teachers go through training to handle difficult situations?

Can students be more confidence without being judged? DO students really think bad thoughts about other

students if they get the wrong answer?
