Course Description:
Drafting Technology is a two semester course in which students will build on the skills that the
developed in Introduction to Drafting. The course will focus on more advanced areas of technical
drawing such as developments, section views, isometric (3D) drawing, and Parametric Solid
Modeling. Students will also be introduced to the design loop. Projects will be assigned that will
allow the students to work on a concrete situation in which they will apply the concepts that they
have learned.
Educational Standards:
The following International Technology Education Association (ITEA) standard(s) will be addressed
in lessons taught in Intro to Drafting:
• #8 Students will develop an understanding of the attributes of design.
• #9 Students will develop an understanding of engineering design.
• #11 Students will develop the abilities to apply the design process.

Course objectives:
Upon successful completion of this class students will be able to accomplish or answer the
following:
• Explain the use of developments in industry; as well as demonstrate the ability to create
drawings of a development, they will then be able to create a model of the development in its
completed form.
• Complete section view drawings of piece parts, as well as explain the different types of section
views, as well as how to select the appropriate type of section.
• Demonstrate an understanding of isometric, and perspective drawings using AutoCAD software
to complete drawings.
• Use AutoDesk’s Inventor software to complete a solid model of a piece part, ad well as to
construct and assembly, and check for interference of parts.
• Explain the use of the design loop, as well as why it is important to methodically work through a
problem.
Course Outline
The following topics will be covered in Drafting Technology:
Developments Section View Drawings
a) What is a development? a) What is a section view?
b) Why are developments used? b) Types of section views
c) How to draw a development c) When do we need a section view
d) Pottery Transport Design Challenge d) How to draw section views

Isometric Drawing Auxiliary drawings

a) Introduction to Isometric Drawing a) What is an Auxiliary drawing?
b) How to draw in the isometric perspective b) When are they needed
c) Design Challenge c) How to draw an auxiliary view
d) Auxiliary drawing in relation to section view
AutoDesk Inventor Final Design Challenge
a) What is Parametric Modeling?
b) What is Inventor
c) What is the difference between solid
modeling and 3D drawing?
d) Operation of Inventor software
e) Intro to Rapid Prototyping (3d printer)

Grading Scale
Grades will be assigned based on the standard LZHS grading scale. Refer to your student handbook
for more information.

Required materials
Students will need to provide the following materials, as well as bring them to class each day.
• 1-1/2” Three ring binder
• 1Gb min flash drive. These can be found at any electronics store, and typically cost less than
20$. Flash drives will be used for the students to back up their work, as while they are rare
computer failures, and network errors can cost students time, and usually occur at the worst
possible time.
