Statistics AP Regression WS Ch 6 and Ch 7 Name: ___________________

1. Cardealers across North America use the “Red Book” to help them determine the value of used cars that their
customers trade in when purchasing new cars. The book lists on a monthly basis the amount paid at recent
used/car auctions and indicates the values according to condition and optional features, but does not inform the
dealers as to how odometer readings affect the trade-in value. In an experiment to determine whether the odometer
reading should be included, ten 3-year old cars are randomly selected of the same make, condition, and options.
The trade-in value and mileage are shown below.
Trade in value 37 31 43 39 41 39 35 40 29 33
(in 100s)
Odometer 59 92 61 72 52 67 88 62 95 83
(in 1000s)
a. Sketch the scatterplot of this data. b. Use your calculator to determine the least-squares regression line
(LSRL)

c. Provide an interpretation of the slope of this line in the context of these

data.

d. Calculate and plot ( x , y ) and graph it in the scatterplot. What do you notice about this point?

e. Find the correlation coefficient for the relationship. Interpret this number.

f. Find the coefficient of determination for the relationship. Interpret this number.

g. Predict the trade-in value of a car with 60,000 miles.

2. Is the magnitude of an earthquake related to the depth below the surface at which the quake occurs?
Magnitude 2.9 4.2 3.3 4.5 1.6 3.2 3.4 3.9
Depth(km) 5.0 10.0 11.2 10.0 7.9 3.9 5.5 8.1
a) What is your explanatory variable?

b) Sketch a scatterplot of the data. Find the correlation coefficient and the LSRL.

c) How effective is the depth below the surface at which the quake occurs to predict the magnitude of an earthquake? Support your
answer statistically.
3. A data set produced the regression equation yˆ = 17.3 - .96 x . Four of the data points are: (2, 15), (7, 11), (4, 12), and (12, 5). Draw
a residual plot for these four points.

4. A study compared the body weight of a child to his/her metabolic rate. Descriptive statistics gives us the following results. Find the
equation of the LSRL. x = 12.5, sx = 6.568, y = 5.888, s y = 2.687, r = .984

5. Suppose that you are given the following results. What is the correlation coefficient of the data? b = .222, sx = 6.32, s y = 1.45

6. (From our text) The data below relates the average degree-days and the resulting gas consumption for residents of Statsylvania.

a. Draw a scatterplot of the data. b. Write the equation of the LSRL.

c. Explain what the y-intercept of the LSRL means in the context of the problem.

d. Using the LSRL in part b, find the residual for a month with degree days of 43.

e. If the residual for a month with degree days 10 is -5, what is the gas consumption for a month with degree days 10?

f. A month with gas consumption of 12 had a residual of 2, what is the degree days for that month?
