PROBLEM STATEMENT

Maize is the key food crop in Kenya, constituting 3% of Kenya’s Gross Domestic
Product (GDP), 12% of the agricultural GDP and 21% of the total value of primary
agricultural commodities (Government of Kenya, 1998). Maize is both a subsistence and
a commercial crop, grown on an estimated at 1.4 million hectares by large-scale farmers
(25%) and smallholders (75%).
Stiff competition in the global market has necessitated sustained innovation for businesses
to survive.
This requires those businesses in this area of milling, change what they offer and the ways in
which they create and deliver that offering in order to avoid business failure. Continuous
improvement is one of the approaches to achieving this objective. It unceasingly strives to
improve the performance of production and service firms.
It has been noted that with the traditional method of running posho mills, there has been low
profit margins due to the number of attendants employed, dishonesty on the part of the
employees and limited time for customers to be served. Thus there is need to develop a system
that minimizes the running costs (salaries and misuse of electricity), provide 24hrs service to
customers and increase the profit margin and customer satisfaction.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF SERVICE POSHO MILLS

 Minimized fraud
 Increased production
 Increased customer satisfaction
 Saves on the energy used (electricity)
