In order to calculate k for a gas we need only
know the molar heat capacity (MC,) for the gas.
Fig. 4-1 gives values of molecular weight and heat
capacity for various gases. The heat capacity varies
considerably with temperature. Since the tempera-
ture of the gas increases as it passes from suction ta
discharge in the compressor the k, is normally de-
termined at the average of suction and discharge
temperatures.
For a mixture of gases, such as natural gas gen-
erally is, the weighted value of molar heat capacity
must be determined. A sample calculation for this
determination is illustrated in Fig. 4-2.
When the gas analysis is not known the value of
molar heat capacity cannot be calculated as shown
in Fig. 4-2. If the specific gravity of the gas is
known, an approximate value for k can be deter-
mined from the curves in Fig. 4-3.
