TUTORIAL –I

Year /Sem: III / VI ME 2352/ DESIGN OF TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

PART-A
1. Name the four types of belts used for transmission of power.
2. What is wiping? How it can be avoided in belt drive?
3. What are the materials used for V grooved pulleys?
4. When do you prefer a wire rope drive?
5. Write any four wire rope applications.
6. How are wire ropes designated?
7. List out the various stresses induced in the wire ropes.
8. While designing a wire rope drive, always, a larger sleeve diameter is preferred justify the
statement?
9. What type of belt would you prefer if the center distance between the pulleys is small?
10. Define creep and slip in belts.
PART-B

1. A V-belt is driven on a flat pulley and a V-pulley. The drive transmits 20 Kw from a 250
mm diameter V-pulley operating at 1800 r.p.m. to a 900 mm diameter flat pulley. The centre
distance is 1 m, the angle of groove 40° and μ = 0.2. If density of belting is 1110 kg / m3
and allowable stress is 2.1 MPa for belt material, what will be the number of belts required
if C-size V-belts having 230 mm2 cross-sectional areas are used.

2. A workshop crane is lifting a load of 25 kN through a wire rope and a hook. The weight of
the hook etc. is 15 kN. The rope drum diameter may be taken as 30 times the diameter of the
rope. The load is to be lifted with an acceleration of 1 m/s2. Calculate the diameter of the
wire rope. Take a factor of safety of 6 and Young’s modulus for the wire rope 80 kN/mm2.
The ultimate stress may be taken as 1800 MPa. The cross-sectional area of the wire rope
may be taken as 0.38 times the square of the wire rope diameter

3. A crusher running at a speed of 400 rpm is driven by an electric motor of 10 KW with a

reduction in speed of 3 times. Taking a centre distance of 600mm , design a V-belt drive.

4. A centrifugal pump which is running at 340 rpm is to be driven by 100 KW motor running
at 1440 rpm. The drive is to work for atleast 20 hours every day. The centre distance is
1.2m. Select D- section V-belt drive and design the drive .and also calculate the actual belt
tension and stress induced.

5. A leather belt 125mm wide and 6mm thick, transmit power from a pulley with the angle of
lap 150° and  =0.3. If the mass of 1m3 of leather is 1 Mg and the stress in the belt is not to
exceed 2.75 Mpa, find the maximum power that can be transmitted and the corresponding
speed of the belt.

6. A Motor of power 2 KW running at a speed of 1440 rpm transmits power to an air blower
running at a speed at 50 rpm. The motor pulley diameter is 200mm. The centre distance may
be 1000 mm . design a suitable V-belt drive.
