EXCUTIVE SUMMARY
The Nandgopal charitable trust situated in south Gujarat works on issue related to
development. The trust had contributed in the area of Mother child programme, general
health programme and also formed a Mahila Mandal., which is actively providing services to
community. Two years back it got a project from National AIDS Control Org. (NACO) to
work on AID/HIV related issues. The project was initiated by Mr. Kundan Malik.
The objective of the project was to identify those groups at higher risk and provide them
counselling, bring behavioural change through intervention, and to promote safe sex methods
among the vulnerable and high risk groups. However , the major problem was to identify the
high risk behaviour group and to get them for testing. The area in which NCT operates, are
about 3500 sex workers, most of them work under anonymity.
The sample survey of sex workers says that all of them knew about the use of condoms ,but
they complain that the most customers resist the use of condom.
Despite many interventions and efforts by the trust there hasn't been a considerable increase
in the sale of condoms which has become a major factor of concern for the trust. Since
condoms are an effective tool in prevention of STDs and HIV/AIDS , a boost in the sales
could help NCT achieve many of its stated objectives.

Situation Analysis
Despite various efforts and interventions, NCT has not been able to get the desired results
from it's awareness programme on the use of the safe sex methods ,which reflects the fact that
awareness is not the issue . Even after setting up condom vending machines and selling
condoms at a price lower than its market price they have not been able to sell the sufficient
number of condoms necessary to prevent the infection from spreading, which reflects another
underlying issue that there is a societal boundations /stigma attached to the use of condom .
This is also evident from the data on the number of condoms sold. There have been many
factors which have acted as a hindrance in the sale of condoms. These factors are mostly
social. In some cases possession of condoms by the CSW and HBSW landed them in jail on
the charges of prostitution, as sex workers are naturally vulnerable due to the societal norms.

Statement of objectives
To decrease the HIV AIDS related issues by focusing on the increase in the
sales of condom (especially adolescents ).
Criteria for the steps to achieve the objective
 To increase the number of sales of condom
 To increase the acceptability of condom in society.
 To increase the awareness about the HIV AIDS.

Steps to achieve the objectives of the organisation.

Firstly, NCT should connect with the people of affected area with their organization and
spread awareness , but , here awareness is not the issue , the problem lies in the fact that there
is no trickle down of the idea for the use of condom, which emanates from societal
norms/stigmas. So, the strategy must be focussed on "How to bring about behavioural /
attitudinal change ?" and not just about the awareness part per se.
Further motivate those people to connect with more and thus form a behavioural change
pattern of people, this will help in transferring the knowledge more rapidly and effectively.
By involving people directly into campaigns they get to know it better and their
awareness and understanding will increase, and eventually it will create a people's movement
which is more likely to be accepted by the society.
Secondly, NCT can take the help of Ministry of health and social welfare and Ministry of
woman and child development, GOI to mobilise the requisite funds and resources so as to
cover more area efficiently.
Subsequently, they should continue their campaign and advertisement as we are able to see
the change in the number of cases of HIV AIDS are decreasing year by year, and there is a
positive correlation between intervention strategies , but, the focus must be on attitudinal
change .
NOTE:
During my Induction Field Segment(IFS) , I noticed that households, just for the sake of
complying with the orders of district authorities are building toilets under Swatch Bharat
Mission-Rural , while in practise they prefer to defecate in open and the toilets are used for
storing grains. I realised that it's really difficult to bring about a behavioural change , while
there's no dearth of awareness about harms of open defecation .
