Reflective Essay and Interview

Due: 11:59pm Sunday 1 July 2018


As part of the portfolio, students are required to complete two reflective essays. The topics of
these are "Communication and Teamwork" and "Personal Development".
Essay questions (you must complete both):

1. Reflective essay for Communication and Teamwork: Read the document titled
‘ISBAR revisited’ produced by Hunter and New England Health service in NSW (in the
Resources section below). You are required to write an essay of between 750-1000
words where you will reflect and discuss communication and teamwork during the
following situations:
1. A time during your 2018 clinical school placements where you saw the ISBAR or a
similar communication framework utilised within a team environment, and how it
impacted the clinical situation?
2. A time during your 2018 clinical school placements where you felt team
communication was sub-optimal, and how a communication tool such as ISBAR
could have impacted the clinical situation?
3. A time during your 2018 clinical school placements where you have utilised or
considered utilising a communication template to aid your communication skills?

2. Reflective essay for Personnel development: Do a brief internet search on the


David Kolb’s theory of experiential learning. You are required to write an essay of
between 750-1000 words where you will consider your personal learning style prior to
and subsequent to you admission to the Sydney Medical program (SMP), based
on Kolb’s classification. Using examples your first year in the SMP, reflect and discuss:
1. A time when your predominant learning style was beneficial to the learning task
required of you, and how you recognised this?
2. A time when you predominant learning style was detrimental to the learning task
required of you, and how you recognised this?
3. Why you may need to adapt your learning style over the next 4 years in the SMP,
and how you will achieve this?

Grading: A "satisfactory" or a "not-yet satisfactory" grade will be given for these essays
during your interview. The grade is based on the information presented in your portfolio
and your genuine participation in the interview discussion. If a "not-yet satisfactory" grade
is given, the Portfolio Co-ordinator is notified and will advise on the required re-submission
and re-interview process.
Format: Your essay submissions should have your name and SID marked clearly on the
front page and in the footer/header of each page. A guide to length is 3-4 pages of type (eg.
Times Roman 12pt, 1.5 spacing).
Please use this format for naming your portfolio file before submitting
it: S1_Essay1_SID_Surname.doc & S1_Essay2_SID_Surname.doc
Submission: All essays are to be submitted electronically via the Turnitin Canvas
Submission portal found below by the due date. Please note that there are two separate
submission portals for the essays. Submissions must be a Word or PDF document. If you
cannot see the portfolio submission link please contact smp.assessment@sydney.edu.au.
You are also required to provide your interviewer with a copy of your portfolio electronically
(and printed if requested) see details below.
