A. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

1. Motivation

Teacher will write a declarative

sentence on the board. Let the class
read it. Afterwards, chance the period
at the end of the sentence to a question
mark. Let the class read the sentence
according to the punctuation given.
And lastly, change the question mark
into exclamation point, let the class
read the sentence. I love you with all my heart.
I love you with all my heart?
I love you wit all my heart!

What have you notice in the sentence

every time we change the punctuation? Every time the punctuation changes,
the meaning of the sentences changes
also.

2. Discussion

Very Good!
It’s meaning changes because of the
punctuation used. Aside from that
sentences are classified according to its
function or use. There are four kinds of
sentence according to its use. First is
declarative sentence. Kindly read its
definition. A declarative sentence states a fact or
opinion and ends with a period.

Thank you!
Which among the three belongs to
declarative sentence?
I love you with all my heart.
Could you tell me the reason why it is
classified as declarative?
Because it gives an idea and it states a
fact. It also ends with a period.
Well said. Now, can somebody give me
an example of a declarative sentence? (Students will construct sentence)

Nice answer! Now let’s talk about the

second types of sentence. Would
someone read the definition on the
board? An interrogative sentence asks a
question and ends with a question
mark.
Based on the definition, construct an
example of interrogative sentence. (Students will give an example of
interrogative.)
Very good! It’s easy to remember right?
Remember that an interrogative
sentence ends with a question mark.

Which among this group of sentence

belongs to interrogative? I love you with all my heart?

What does the speaker means in this

statement? The speaker has no clear idea his/her
feelings toward someone.
Very good.
The third type of sentence is the
imperative sentence. Read the
definition, Lily. An imperative sentence expresses a
request or gives a command or
direction. It also ends with a period.
Thank you.
Study this example.
Please give the certificate.
It ends with a period but doesn’t mean
it is a declarative sentence. Can
somebody explain in the class why?
It’s because the sentence do not state a
fact and opinion. It states a request.
You got it! Perfect! Now, I want you to
give me an example of imperative
sentence that gives an order or
direction.
(Students volunteer to give their
answers)
Oh! Well done! So, what about an
imperative sentence that expresses a
request? (Students volunteer to give their
answers)

Oh! I could see that you got a little

confused with the imperative sentence
but I am glad you were able to get its
function. Nice try for those who gave
their answers!

Now, let’s discuss the last type of

sentence. Kindly read.
An exclamatory sentence conveys
emotion and ends with an exclamation
mark.

It is obvious that the sentence “ I love

you with all my heart! “ belongs to
exclamatory since it conveys its
feelings of being in love. When you
receive a gift from someone who is
very close to your heart, what is your
first reaction using exclamatory
sentence?
Wow! Thank you for the gift!

What about when you suddenly slip on

the wet floor.
Awch!

Nice! Do you have any questions? Any

clarifications?

3. Enrichment Activity

Brain Blitz. Identify whether the

sentence is a declarative, interrogative,
imperative, or exclamatory. The
students will raise the following sign
for its equivalent type of sentence:
(.) declarative
(!) exclamatory
(?) interrogative
(.) imperative
The group who will earn the highest
number of points will be declared as
the winner.

1. Meet me at the park at noon. Imperative

2. Yellow is my favourite color. Declarative
3. Why are you standing there alone? Interrogative
4. What time is it? Interrogative
5. She is wearing a striped shirt. Declarative
6. Put on your pants. Imperative
7. My mother is a doctor. Declarative
8. What a nice day! Imperative
9. Is this mine? Interrogative
10. Please erase the writing on the
board. Imperative

4. Generalization

Okay, we have learned that there are

four types of sentence according to its
use. What are these four again? These are declarative, interrogative,
imperative and exclamatory sentence.

Let us also remember the right

punctuation to use in forming a
sentence.
