Assignment 2

Semester Two, 2018

There are 9 questions altogether. Read each question carefully, and show your work to receive
full credit.

1. At noon, a cargo ship is 150 km west of a cruise ship. The cargo ship is sailing east at 35
km/h and the cruise ship is sailing north at 25 km/h. How fast is the distance between
the ships changing at 4 pm?

2. A kite 50 m above the ground moves horizontally at a speed of 2 m/s. At what rate is
the angle between the string and the horizontal decreasing when 100 m of string has been
let out.

3. The length of a rectangle is increasing at a rate of 8 cm/s and its width is increasing at
a rate of 3 cm/s When the length is 20 cm and the width is 10 cm, how fast is the area
of the rectangle increasing?

4. Let f (x) = −2x3 − 3x2 + 12x + 5.

(a) Find the local maxima and minima of the function.

(b) Find the absolute maximum (greatest value) and the absolute minimum (least value)
of f (x) over [0, 5].
(c) Determine the concavity of the graph of f (x). Are there any points of inflection?

5. Find the horizontal asymptotes of the following functions

(a)
x2 + x + 1
f (x) = .
x(3x − 1)
(b)
1 + ex
g(x) = .
2 + 3ex

6. Find the limits below. When using L’Hospital’s Rule make sure the conditions of the
Rule are satisfied.

(a)
sin 5x
lim .
x→0 2x

(b)
ln(x4 + 1)
lim √ .
x→∞ x
(c)
1
lim x x .
x→∞

7. Explain why L’Hospital’s Rule is not applicable to

1 − sin θ
lim
θ→π/2 1 − cos 2θ

but is applicable to
1 − sin θ
lim .
π−
θ→ 2 1 + cos 2θ
What are the limits for each case?

8. Let
1
f (x) = .
x (x − 3)2
(a) Determine:
(i) the domain D of f ,
(ii) the intercepts,
(iii) the horizontal and vertical asymptotes (if they exist),
(iv) the intervals where the function increases and decreases,
(v) the local maximum and minimum values.
(b) Sketch the graph of f (x) using the information in part (a). (Do not use a graphing
calculator.)

9. Let
2
f (x) = 1 + .
x−1
(a) Find limx→∞ f (x) and limx→−∞ f (x).
(b) Write down the equations of all asymptotes.
