Armour steel is steel that widely used as a material for armoured vehicles
such as tank. The requirements for armour steel are high values in strength 1600-
1950 MPa, minimum hardness 400-600 VHN, toughness 130 MPa m and good
ballistic performance. The aim of this research is to study the effects of
austempering heat treatment process with holding time variaty to physical and
mechanical properties of CFB steels (carbide-free bainitic steels) for armour steel
application.
The material used is steel with chemical compositions of 0,31% C; 0,33%
Ni; 0,75% Si; 2,27% Cr; 2,11% Mn; 0,28% Mo; 0,28% Cu. The austempering
process were first prepared by heating CFB steels in a furnace until temperature of
900°C for 20 minutes. In austempering process is intended to form a bainite
structure is influenced by several factors such as austempering temperature and
holding time. Furthermore, steels were quenched in a salt-bath (80% KNO! and
20% NaNO! ) at temperature of 300°C with variety of holding time.
Microstructure observation, hardness, tensile and impact tests were conducted in
this study.
Results showed that austempering heat treatment process with 90 minutes of
holding time on CFB steel increased hardness from 434,5 to 475,24 MPa and
increased tensile strength from 505.25 to 1652,31 MPa and also impact toughness
from 15.33 to 25,67 Joule. It means that CFB steels have a good potential for
armour steel.
