1. I NT RO D UC T I O N

The OLCT IR gas detector is designed to measure explosive gas or CO2 levels in the environment. The
infrared technology used by the OLCT IR guarantees extreme detection accuracy.

Powered with direct current, the OLCT IR delivers a normalized current of 4-20 mA according to the measured
concentration of gas. It is equipped with a local calibration device, which enables calibration in ATEX zones without
the need to open the detector case.

The OLCT IR detector can be used in atmospheres containing explosive gases and dust and meets all of the
essential requirements of the European ATEX 94/9/EC directive and the following European EN and international IEC
standards:

- EN 60079-0: 2006 IEC 60079-0: 2004

- EN 60079-1: 2004 IEC 60079-1: 2003
- EN 60079-7: 2004 IEC 60079-7: 2001
- EN 60079-11: 2007 IEC 60079-11: 2006
- EN 61241-0: 2006 IEC 61241-0: 2004
- EN 61241-1: 2004 IEC 61241-1: 2004

The OLTC IR is available in various configurations. The primary configurations are listed below:

Methane Version (CH4 ):

- Optimized for methane detection with a standard range of 0-100% LEL. (0-5% vol)
- This version can be adjusted to a range of 0-4.4% vol for use in countries that use this value as the lower
explosive limit for methane.
- Methane detection from 0 to 100% vol.

HC Version:

- Optimized for the detection of saturated hydrocarbons (propane, butane, pentane, hexane, ethanol). The
standard range can be set in the factory:

C3 H8 – 0 to 100% LELC4 H10 – 0 to 100% LEL

C2 H6 O – 0 to 100% LEL
C6 H14 – 0 to 100% LEL

CO2 Version:

11
Warning: Acetylene and ammonia interfere with detector measurements. If acetylene is present in quantities
over 2,000 ppm or if ammonia is present in quantities exceeding 10,000 ppm, the presence of other
gases may be masked.

2.1. Interference of common gases on the OLCT IR (CH4 and HC)

Any organic molecule with at least one C-H bond except for acetylene can potentially be detected by the OLCT IR,
though the sensitivity level will vary.

Note the following:

• Regardless of the type of sensor, saturated hydrocarbons are more easily detected than CH4 ;
• The OLTC IR CH4 is more sensitive to CH4 and less sensitive to hydrocarbons than the OLCT IR HC;
• For an OLCT IR CH4 : an output signal of 20mA signals a 100% LEL CH4 or 20% LEL C3 H8 value (a
factor of 5);
• For an OLCT IR HC: an output signal of 6.4mA signals a 100% LEL CH4 or 14% LEL C3 H8 value (a
factor of 7);
• The OLCT IR HC is generally better adapted for saturated molecules such as alkanes, alcohols, ketones,
organic acids, esters and ethers.
• The OLCT IR CH4 is generally better adapted for unsaturated alkene and aromatic type molecules with
C-H bonds, which often give a weaker signal than CH4

For example, the response curves at +/-15 % for OLCT IR detectors for common HCs.

3. I NS T AL L AT I O N
WARNING: Before proceeding, refer to paragraph 8 titled, “Specific Instructions for Assembly in Explosive
Atmospheres” on page 18.

3.1. Safety Precautions

The detector must be installed in an appropriate location to enable optimal protection.

The OLCT IR detector must be mounted horizontally so that the arrow on the protective cover points up.
If mounted incorrectly, the OLCT IR detector may not be able to detect gases or vapors in the air.

3.2. Mechanical installation

- Follow the aforementioned safety instructions carefully
- Inspect the detector: see Figures 1 and 4.
- The OLCT IR detector is intended to be mounted on a vertical support structure, such as a wall. If
mounted on a horizontal surface, use an adaptor bracket (part number 6132380, see Fig. 5).

3.3. Electrical installation

- Ensure that the installation complies with currently enforced standards, EN/IEC 60079-14, EN/IEC 61241-
14 standards, zone classification, and all other enforced editions or national standards.
- To ensure the proper functioning of the detector, cable resistance should remain within the limits specified
in the technical specifications table.
- Power supply at detector terminals: 16 to 30 VDC
Installation:
- Remove the protective cover (see Ref. 4, Fig 2) to access the connection terminals
- Connect the 3 active wires as shown in Fig 3.
- Replace the protective cover
- Ground the detector body (Fig. 1).

13
-

4. S T ART UP
- Verify that all equipment connections and installations have been performed correctly.
- To avoid the accidental triggering of alarms, start up in safety mode (alarms are blocked).
- Power up the equipment and wait 2 or 3 minutes to allow it to stabilize: (During the first minute of warm-
up, the detector will deliver a current of 2 mA)
- Test the zero (4 mA) and gas response. For CO2 , inject nitrogen to correctly adjust the zero setting.

5. M AI NT E NA NC E

! The adjustment operations in this paragraph are reserved for authorized, trained personnel because they
may compromise detection reliability.
Never open a detector case containing an inert gas. If the detector is opened, the sensor must be returned to a
factory for repair.

Inspection and maintenance operations must be conducted in accordance with EN60079-17 or IEC 60079-17,
currently enforced editions or other national standards.

The OLCT IR is designed to require mini mal maintenance.

Regularly inspecting the detector heads is the only maintenance needed.

5.1. Corrective maintenance

Optical surfaces only need to be cleaned in the event of an optical disturbance (output current of 0.5 mA) or
signal drift:
- remove the protective cover (Ref. 1 Fig. 2)
- clean the optical surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol
- if necessary, clean the optional mosquito cover and the protective cover
- allow to dry
- replace the protective cover, ensuring that the arrow is properly oriented.

5.2. Periodic maintenance

Warning: The adjustment operations in this paragraph are reserved for authorized, trained personnel
because they may compromise detection reliability.

Gas detectors are safety devices. In consideration of this, Industrial Scientific recommends regular testing of fixed gas
detection installations. This type of test consists of injecting a standard gas of sufficient concentration into the sensor to
set off the pre-adjusted alarms. This test does not, in any event, replace a full calibration of the sensor.

Industrial Scientific also recommends completely calibrating detectors with a known and certified concentration of gas
every 3 or 4 months.

Frequency of gas testing depends on the industrial application in which the sensors are used. Inspection should occur
frequently during the months following installation startup, later it may be spaced out if no significant problem is
observed. Time intervals between tests should not exceed 3 months.

If a detector does not react upon contact with gas, it must be calibrated. Calibration frequency should be adapted based
on test results. However, it should not be greater than one year.

14
Industrial Scientific recommends using a test gas to calibrate detectors.

The site manager is responsible for implementing the safety procedures on his site. Industrial
Scientific is not responsible for implementing safety procedures.

5.3. Verification
Ø Required equipment:
- A gas calibration kit (test gas tank and accessories)
- A test cover (Part no. 6313829)
Ø Procedure
- Use the test cover to inject a test gas (at 2l/m) and check for an accurate reading or for the
triggering of appropriate alarms (note; without the test cover, the level may be underestimated
(in winds > 20Km/h)

5.4. Calibration:
Ø Required equipment:
- A gas calibration kit (test gas tank and accessories)
- A magnet for using the maintenance menu and for validating settings (Part no. 6155651)
calibration pipe (Part no. 6313863)

Preparation:
- Verify that the equipment is functioning normally
- Put the central controller into calibration mode (relays are blocked)
- Remove the screw (Ref. 3, Fig 2) and remove the protective cover
- Position the calibration hood as shown in Fig. 4
- Connect the kit tube to one of the hood terminals
- Inject air or the test gas at a flow rate between 1 l/min to 2 l/min (stabilization time: 2 min).
- The concentration of test gas that must be used is shown on the detector
- Use a battery to complete the procedure as indicated by the red LED (Ref. 8, Fig 2)

Calibration:
Procedure
Calibration is usually limited to adjusting the zero. Sensitivity adjustments are only performed on rare occasions (if
performed more often: see diagram).
- Adjust the zero in a gas-free environment
- If clean air is not available, inject nitrogen or reconstituted air to ensure that the zero is properly adjusted;
for CO2 , inject nitrogen.
- Follow the instructions in the diagram
- After the procedure: Stop injecting gas and replace the original anti-projection cover, taking care that the
arrow is properly oriented
- Put the central measuring controller back into “normal mode” (relays are no longer blocked).

WARNING : During the calibration, the security function is no guaranteed and the output current is
blocked at 2mA up to the end of the procedure.

8.2 Operating security

The detector OLCT IR is compliant with EN 50402 for SIL 2 capability by INERIS for, CH4 and HC versions
(Certificate INERIS 03ATEX0141X/02). This normative in force since 2005 is dedicated to electrical devices for gas
detection and monitoring (flammable, toxic and oxygen) and states the minimum requirement for the gas detection fixed
system security. The detector OLCT IR was developed in conformity with the safety standard IEC 61508. The safety
function of the OLCT IR is the detection of combustible gases by infrared absorption technology and a 4-20mA output,
current proportional to the gas concentration as a percentage of the LEL, respectively from 0 to 100% LEL. In case of
default, the output will fall-back position with a current less than or equal to 1 mA or greater than or equal to 23mA.

19
- Wiring/ Connections:
Wiring must comply with the prevailing regulations for installations in explosive atmospheres, notably the
IEC/EN 60079-14 and IEC/EN 60079-17 standards. The cables must have mechanical protection.

When conductors are connected to the terminal, the distance between live components and grounded metal
components must be greater than 2.5mm.

- Grounding:
The detector must be connected to the ground with the external ground connection with corrosion protection.

- Power supply:
Voltage at detector terminals = 30 VDC max, 16 VDC min.
Max power = 5.8 Watts

- Replacing screws:
If you need to replace a screw from the anti-combustion component of the support structure, use an A4.70 or higher
quality screw.

- Dusty atmospheres:
When using the equipment in dusty, explosive atmospheres, the equipment should be thoroughly cleaned on a regular
basis to prevent the build up of dust. The maximum thickness for dust buildup is less than 5 mm. The support/sensor
and support/metal cover joints must be covered in paraffin-type oil.

Transfer curve and power supply parameters

The following curve shows the output current value for the OLCT IR transmitter in relation to the concentration of gas,
special maintenance statuses and faults. In the event that the user connects the transmitter to a non-ISC OLDHAM
central controller, the user must ensure that the OLTC IR transfer curve is comparable to the central controller input
characteristics to correctly interpret the data coming in from the transmitter.

In addition, the central controller should provide a power supply of 16 to 32 VDC to the detector terminals, with
intermittent point current at 500 mA. The maximu m length of the connection cable is determined in relation to the
above characteristics.
